Are Oreos Gluten Free

Yes, and no. Most packaged Nabisco Oreos are not gluten free.

But theres the one package of gluten free Oreos, made by Nabisco. Theyre even the cookies we used to make our recipe for gluten free fried Oreos.

That recipe for fried Oreos was really my way of celebrating the fact that Nabisco finally started selling a certified gluten free variety of their famous chocolate sandwich cookies.

When I first developed this recipe for homemade gluten free Oreos, Nabisco didnt make a gluten free chocolate sandwich cookie of any kind. There were other gluten free cookie brands that made pretty good ones, including gluten free Joe-Joes from Trader Joes.

The fact that Nabisco now makes a GF variety, its even more fun to make this homemade version. Theyre not quite as thin as the packaged kind, but I never liked how thin the chocolate wafer cookie is in Oreos.

Our homemade version is richer than the original, since the cookies are made with tons of cocoa powder and even some melted chocolate. And the filling is yours to customize.

Try chocolate or lemon filling. Or dye it a color to celebrate a holiday.

Tips For Making Homemade Gluten

These gluten-free Oreos are incredibly easy to make.

Roll the dough out and use a cutter to cut out the wafers just like you would for sugar cookies. Cut the cookies as close together, re-roll and cut out more. The goal is to cut most of the cookies out on the first and second roll.

You can certainly roll the dough out a third or fourth time, but the cookies will get ever so slightly more dense.

As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, use the bottom of a glass to press each cookie down ever so slightly on the baking sheet. This will smooth out the tops and help hold the cookies together so they won’t crumble as easily.

Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for at least five minutes before transferring to a wire rack. That little extra cool on the baking sheet will help the cookies firm up so they won’t fall apart when you try to move them.

After piping the frosting, pop the finished homemade Oreos in the fridge for 10 minutes to let the filling firm up before devouring. These homemade gluten-free Oreos will keep in the fridge for a week or on the counter for 2-3 days. You can eat them right out of the fridge, but I recommend bringing them to room temperature before serving.

Youll notice that one of the ingredients is whole oat flour. Although oats are gluten free when theyre sourced properly, Nabisco doesnt specify that their oat flour is made from certified gluten free oats.

However, Nabiscos gluten free Oreos are certified gluten free by the Gluten Free Certification Organization . The GFCO is a program of the Gluten Intolerance Group, or GIG.

The Glutino Chocolate Vanilla Creme Sandwich Cookies are currently my go-to sandwich cookies for a gluten-free OREO substitution. However, as you can see on their review page, consumer complaints have been high over the new recipe of the cookie. The texture isnt perfect theyre thick and sturdy , but Ive been happily purchasing them as they were the only easy-to-find substitute for OREO-like cookies on gluten-free shelves. Theyre easy to find, pretty affordable, and I think taste the most like OREO sandwich cookies apart from actual OREOs. Also, I LOVE their vanilla sandwich cookie version so I wont stop buying those varieties for something different.

How To Make Gluten

  • Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
  • In a large bowl add the sugar and butter. Mix with an electric mixer for 1-2 minutes until creamed.
  • Add the egg and mix for another 1-2 minutes, scraping down the sides.
  • Add the dry ingredients in 3 additions, mixing after each addition. Mix the dough until completely combined.

After you mix the dough altogether its important to give it a 30-minute rest. This gives the gluten-free flour time to hydrate and really makes a difference. Its key for non-gritty gluten-free cookies!

  • Using a ½ tablespoon or teaspoon measure, scoop out 1-2 teaspoon size balls of dough. I love these gold magnetic measuring spoons. I use the ½ tablespoon spoon to scoop these cookies. Roll into a ball and place on the lined baking sheet.
  • Flatten the dough balls slightly then bake!

Note: If you want softer gluten-free oreos, bake the cookies for 6 minutes. If youre wanting a crisper cookie bake the cookies for 8-9 minutes.

Do Gluten Free Oreos Taste Any Different

Its been a long time since Ive had a conventional, gluten-containing Oreo. But both of my daughters eat gluten outside the house .

I asked my gluten-eating daughters if the packaged gluten free Oreos taste any different. I think theyre the best judge. Their response: not really.

The Nabisco gluten free Oreos are a super-close version of the original favorite sandwich cookie. Theyre crispy and chocolatey, and the filling is just right.

The chocolate cookies stick in your teeth like theyre supposed to do. And I do love that my gluten free son can feel super normal, eating regular Oreos.

Unfortunately, these sandwich cookies ranked the lowest of the three sandwich cookies we tested. They are very sugar-y and have more of a cake-like taste , more crumbly and sand-y, and were the least like Oreo cookies. While I definitely dont mind buying them if Im in need of a cookie fix, the price and taste arent worth it compared to the new GF Oreos .

For A Chocolate Filling Variation

In place of the 4 cups of confectioners sugar, use 3 1/2 cups of confectioners sugar plus 3/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder.

Begin by adding 3 cups of the confectioners sugar and all the cocoa powder along with the meringue powder. Then, add up to the remaining 1/2 cup of the confectioners sugar, if necessary, to thicken the frosting.

Vanilla Creme Filling 2 Options

Once the gluten-free oreo cookies are baked and cooled you can make the filling. There are 2 options for the filling.

You can either make a cream-cheese based filling which isnt traditional but is totally delicious. Or for a more classic option you can make a shortening-based filling. Both are delicious and its up to you!

To fill the cookies you can use a piping bag or simply a ziploc with a hole cut in the bottom. I like to match up even sized cookies when making the sandwiches.

Sturdy But Delicate Gluten

Once set, these gluten-free chocolate wafer cookies are crisp and sturdy enough to hold a filling without crumbling, but delicate snd airy enough that they’ll snap without filling squeezing out the sides. The texture is similar to that of a graham cracker, only softening a bit after a couple of days sitting with buttercream sandwiched between.

To get that copycat dark cookie wafer akin to real Oreos, I use Rodelles organic dutch-processed baking cocoa, which lends color and a deep chocolate flavor . To emphasize the chocolate notes, I add a splash of Rodelle organic chocolate extract, which is my secret weapon for all chocolate desserts.

Homemade Oreo Filling Options

Sandwich the crispy gluten-free chocolate wafers with your choice of vanilla or peppermint buttercream. Once winter rolls around, I’m a peppermint fanatic.

To get in the holiday spirit, I use peppermint and vanilla extracts to flavor the filling. The result is a cross between an Oreo and a Thin Mint. Start with a small splash of peppermint extract, taste, and adjust, being careful not to turn your filling into toothpaste territory. These chocolate peppermint sandwiches are a new staple on my holiday cookie plate.

If you’re averse to peppermint, no problem! Just swap out the peppermint extract for extra Rodelle organic vanilla extract. You could even add a tablespoon of matcha to the filling!

When I tested these homemade Oreos, I tried out both buttercream and cream cheese frosting filling options. I was certain I’d love the cream cheese filling the most.

While I loved the cream cheese filling equally as much, the flavor strayed quite a bit from the classic Oreo notes. The cocoa wafer was less prominent. For that reason, I’m sticking with buttercream. If you’re not an Oreo purist, feel free to swap out half the butter for cream cheese. The cream cheese frosting filling adds tangy notes that make the homemade Oreos taste a bit like a whoopie pie.

Whichever choice you make, these homemade gluten-free Oreo copycats deserve a place on your holiday cookie plate!

What Oreos Will Be Gluten

There will be two new gluten-free Oreos available: the classic Oreo cookie and the Double Stuf variety. Both of the new gluten-free cookies have been approved and certified by the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America.

The best part? They will be a permanent addition to the product line! Oreo promises more details as we get closer to 2021, like the list of ingredients and nutritional breakdowns. But what we really want to know is what they taste like.

I have gotten A LOT of messages/emails regarding the new Gluten-Free Oreos? I get the excitement, being able to have a taste of your pre-celiac days. I meanits just a cookiebut I do get it.

But are they really celiac safe and do I recommend them? This should be an easy question, but of course when it comes to celiac disease, easy questions are hard to come by. So follow along the bouncing ball and lets take this a step at a time.

  • Did you know there was a petition started 7 years ago to get Nabisco to make gluten-free Oreos and its gotten over 3,000 signatures? Kind of an odd thing to petition for but heywho am I to say?
