Are Soft Pretzels Gluten Free

Gluten Free Soft Pretzels from Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Fresh Pizza Dough

Most name brands of soft pretzels are not gluten-free. A gluten free alternative might seem hard to find, but there are definitely brands of Gluten Free Soft Pretzels out there to buy!

If you want to find gluten free frozen soft pretzels, I wouldnt suggest driving to the nearest store and looking in the freezer section. Because not many stores carry the products on this list, its best to look online or call ahead to be sure a store near you has the brand youre looking for.

But dont worry, if you cant find any of the soft pretzels on this list at a store near you, you can order them online and have them shipped to you!

For each gluten free frozen soft pretzel brand on this list, Ill list some popular stores that often carry that brand. If available, Ill also link a product locator so you can search for these products by typing in your location.

As I said before, these GF soft pretzels are sold online and can be shipped right to your door. So, Ill link some online retailers in the buy online section!

Product ingredients can change at any time, so be sure to always read the latest product labels, certifications, and allergen warnings before purchasing any of the products on this list. If you find another brand that I didnt mention, leave a comment below so I can add it!

Baking Soda Bath: A Simple At

Traditionally, pretzels are dipped in a lye bath before baking. Lye, or sodium hydroxide , is a highly basic compound and dipping raw, unbaked pretzels into its solution promotes browning and gives them their characteristic flavour, chewy texture and dark colour.

The pH of a lye solution is around 13 to 14, which means its extremely corrosive and needs to be handled with care you need to use safety goggles and gloves, and work in a well-ventilated space when using it. This can be stressful, potentially dangerous if you dont handle it with enough care, and not really something Id recommend, especially if you havent used it before. Thats why I prefer to use a milder and safer base for making pretzels: baking soda.

A baking soda solution is less alkaline with a pH around 8 to 9. The effect it has on pretzels is less pronounced compared to that of lye, but it still produces delicious soft pretzels with that wonderful characteristic flavour and soft, chewy texture.

Some recommend heat-treating baking soda in the oven before using it. This transforms baking soda, sodium bicarbonate , to the more alkaline sodium carbonate , raising the pH from about 8 to about 11. However, this step can be time and energy consuming, so I just use untreated baking soda in this recipe.

These Auntie Annes-style gluten free soft pretzels with sweet mustard dipping sauce will keep you from having just one gluteny pretzel at the mall!

I havent had an Auntie Annes pretzel in the mall in, like, 100 years. But Auntie Annes pretzels are like Cinnabon. You cant help but get something of a contact high if you set foot in a mall that sells them.

That buttery, salty goodness just lives there permanently. Just ask the tired parents waiting in line at that pretzel counter on any given Saturday in America. You cant escape it. Well, when youre gluten free, clearly you must escape it.

Boiling the pretzels in a baking soda bath, like boiling bagels, is what gives them that chewy exterior. They wrinkle up, but dont worry! They plump right up when you bake them.

What Gives Gluten Free Soft Pretzels Their Characteristic Flavour And Texture

The crucial step in the recipe that gives these gluten free soft pretzels their classic flavour and chewy texture is the baking soda bath so dont be tempted to skip it!

As mentioned above, the baking soda bath is a simple, at-home alternative to the more traditional lye bath. And while it doesnt affect the flavour and texture of the pretzels as intensely as the lye solution , it still produces super delicious pretzels.

Why Im Reviewing Packaged Gluten Free Pretzels

Unlike potato chips, pretzels, by their very nature, have gluten unless theyre specifically gluten free. That means a few things, some more relevant if youre a self-conscious teenager who hates being singled out like my son.

Many of these brands also make gluten-containing pretzels, so be careful when you make your selection that youre picking up the gluten free variety. Unfortunately, its that GLUTEN FREE designation that makes my teenage gluten free son uncomfortable and more likely to get hassled.

For that reason, hed rather bring Lays potato chips to school for lunch than pretzels. That, and he also happens to love chips with astounding devotion, but you get the idea.

Since theyre specifically made gluten free but are otherwise gluten-containing, gluten free pretzels have to be manufactured with generally less-available ingredients and in a dedicated or super clean environment. That means that these pretzels are generally more expensive than their conventional counterparts.

Much like dried gluten free pasta, these manufacturers are sort of reinventing the wheel, too, which leads to varying quality, taste, and texture. Thats the real reason Im doing this roundup of the best gluten free pretzels.

Ever since I did that first mass taste test for the best gluten free bread brands, whenever my children see me amassing a bunch of one type of packaged gluten free product, they give me the side eye ? and ask if Im testing more brands.

How To Find Gluten

Even if the pretzels you’re buying contain no gluten ingredients, they may still be at risk for cross-contamination, which occurs when gluten foods come in contact with other ingredients either through manufacturing or preparation, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation.

You can avoid cross-contact by choosing your bag carefully. To play it safe, avoid pretzels at a party or restaurant, unless you can be certain they’re gluten-free.

At the grocery store, read the ingredient list of any package you decide to buy. Look out for any gluten-based foods and check the allergen listing for wheat or gluten, too.

If the ingredients are gluten-free-approved, find a “Gluten-Free” label on the front package of the product. This label is regulated by the Food & Drug Administration and signifies that the food you’re eating has less than 20 parts per million of gluten, which is generally safe for people with celiac disease to eat.

If you want even more security, buy pretzels that are labeled “Certified Gluten-Free” and are assessed by qualified third parties, such as the Gluten-Free Certification Organization . The GFCO has especially strict standards, certifying foods that have only 10 ppm of gluten or less, according to the organization’s website.

Who This List Is For

Gluten Free Soft Pretzels (Dairy Free Option)

This list of 8 brands of the best gluten free pretzel brands is made up of products available primarily to United States residents. The prices and other details referred to are for the products available the U.S., since that is where I live and spend money.

I am actually able to find all but one of these brands in a local brick-and-mortar grocery or natural foods store near me. But I live in a major metropolitan area. All but the ALDI brand, Live GFree, are available from I didnt include anything that was just too difficult to source in the U.S.

You know you can trust my reviews to be honest. I did only share those pretzels that I really love, since I dont want to trash any companies. But I also told you their weak points, so you can decide for yourself.

Im thinking about doing gluten free crackers for my next product review. Ive started to accumulate some, but its very hit or miss. Better I waste my money than you waste yours, though!

Baking Soda Bath And Baking

Once the gluten-free pretzels have risen, transfer them on the sheet pan to the freezer. They will be puffy looking and 50% bigger than their original size. Freezing the pretzels for 10-20 minutes, while you preheat the oven and prepare the baking soda bath prevents them from breaking apart while being boiled and ensures for them to keep their pretzel shape.

The baking soda bath gives the pretzels their signature color and distinctive soft pretzel chew. While many bakers prefer using food-grade lye, I believe baking soda will achieve the same result and is safer to work with.

While the pretzels are in the freezer, preheat your oven to 425F and arrange your oven rack in the center of the oven.

For the Baking Soda Bath, bring 8 cups of water to a boil in a large pot. Make sure it has enough space since the baking soda will foam up once you add it to the boiling water. While the water comes to a boil, line a baking pan with parchment paper and spray with non-stick spray, prepare the egg wash and your toppings of choice. For a classic soft pretzel, I like to use flaky sea salt, a very coarse sea salt or pretzel salt. Spraying the parchment paper with a non-stick spray is a must unless you want your pretzels to stick to the parchment paper after being baked.

Once the water is at a boil, carefully add the baking soda. It will foam up!

How To Make Easy Gluten Free Soft Pretzels

Dutch Country Foods 3 oz. Gluten Free Soft Pretzels

To bake these homemade pretzels you first need to preheat the oven and line your baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, mix together the dry ingredients until well distributed.

Then, add the yogurt and mix well. Once incorporated, form a ball and knead it a few times ensuring everything holds together.

If the mixture is too dry and crumbly, add water a tablespoon at a time while kneading. The dough should be firm, but pliable.

Divide the dough into 5 equal pieces, then roll each piece into a ball.

Roll each ball into strips, about 11-12 inches long.

Twist the dough to form a pretzel shape and place on the parchment.

Generously brush each pretzel with olive oil and sprinkle with additional salt.

Bake on the middle rack of the oven until golden and enjoy!

What Is Psyllium Husk

Psyllium husks come from the seed of the Plantago plant, a native of India and Pakistan. It is naturally gluten-free. It is known as a source of soluble fiber which loves to absorb moisture. This ingredient helps reduce the crumbly structure often found in gluten-free baked goods. It gives the dough elasticity and flexibility and makes it workable.

Psyllium husk is especially useful in gluten-free recipes which rely on the structure gluten provides. Psyllium interacts strongly with the proteins in gluten-free flours, creating a sturdy enough structure to support highly leavened bread once the bread cools. Skipping psyllium husk may cause the pretzel dough to be difficult to shape into pretzels and most likely will fall apart in the water bath before baking.

Note About Ovens And Oven Temperatures

Gluten Free Soft Pretzels and Pretzel Bites

All my recipes are tested and developed with a conventional oven. I always bake my baked goods on the rack placed in the MIDDLE of my oven. This way the heat coming from the bottom will not burn my baked goods.

If you are baking with convection , please adjust the recipes accordingly. Be also prepared that the convection oven can cause your baked goods to dry out quickly and still be raw inside. Be aware that it takes at least 15-20 minutes for a standard American Oven to be fully preheated. I highly recommend investing in an Oven Thermometer.

How To Shape Homemade Soft Pretzels

First, give the dough a gentle knead on a lightly floured surface and divide it into 12 equal pieces.

Then, shape the pretzels:

  • Roll out each piece of dough into a rope about 16-18 inches/40-46cm long.
  • Form it into a U-shape.
  • Cross the ends of the U-shape by placing one over the other
  • and then twist them around each other.
  • Bring the twisted ends down, creating the classic pretzel shape.
  • Gently press down on the ends to make sure that they stick.
  • Dont stress if your pretzels dont look perfect on first try. Working with gluten free dough can take some time to get used to, as its more fragile than regular wheat-based dough. If youre not happy with the shape of your pretzel, you can always re-knead that piece of dough, re-roll it into a long rope and then shape it again just make sure not to incorporate too much extra flour into it.

Place the shaped pretzels onto lined baking sheets. Be careful and gentle when you handle and transfer them, as gluten free dough is a bit softer and more delicate than regular dough made with wheat flour. You can use a bench scraper to help transfer the shaped pretzels onto the baking sheet.

Note also that you can play around with the shape of your pretzels specifically with their size and thickness. The length of the dough ropes can be anywhere from 16 inches/40cm, which results in quite chubby pretzels with small-ish holes, to 18 inches/46cm, which gives thinner pretzels with more pronounced openings.
