High Protein Bars But Not The Best Ingredients

Healthy, vegan protein bar recipe | Vegan, Gluten Free, NO added sugar

Power bar protein bars do supply a high amount of protein , but they also contain quite a few ingredients including processed oils and food additives. When given the choice we would recommend another bar.

Think Thin bars are a little more processed than some other bars on the market. They also contain a lot of food ingredients that a lot of people may have sensitivities to.

Wonderslim Protein & Fiber Bar

How To Make Homemade Low Carb Protein Bars

This recipe is so easy to make, you may never buy protein bars from the store again.

First, we combine most the ingredients in the food processor:

  • Add the whey protein, sweeteners, shredded coconut, and almond butter to your food processor.
  • Melt the coconut oil, then stir in the sea salt and vanilla.
  • Pour the coconut oil mixture into the food processor.
  • Process the ingredients until they start to form a ball of dough.
  • Then, we stir in the final ingredients and let the protein bars set:

  • With a rubber spatula, stir in the sunflower seeds and chocolate chips .
  • Line a 7×11 pan with parchment paper. This will make it much easier to transfer the bars out of the pan and slice them later.
  • Transfer the dough into the pan. Using a rubber spatula, spread the dough into an even layer.
  • Place the pan in the refrigerator for at least an hour to set.
  • After an hour, your low carb protein bars will be ready!

I recommend lifting the mixture out of the pan and then cutting the bars on the parchment paper. That way, they wont stick to the cutting board. I cut mine into 15 squares.

The Definition Of A Protein Bar

So, what is a protein bar and how does it differ from a candy bar? Protein bars are smallish food bars that, unsurprisingly, contain high amounts of protein. You will find a multitude of varieties on the shelves, including different types and flavors, all of which will give you lots of options to fit in with your taste and diet.

For non-vegan bars, the protein added will generally come from milk or whey, whereas dairy-free protein bars will commonly use pea, brown rice, or soy protein. These proteins are largely added in powdered form, which allows manufacturers to pack in a whole lot of protein into one tiny little bar of goodness.

The idea behind the manufacturing of these snacks is simple to produce a product that gives people a easy way to increase their protein intake. This is definitely a product of convenience for those that would prefer to grab a quick snack instead of making a protein-rich smoothie or cook something from scratch, but thats okay.

After all, we all need a little help at times, right?

    Sunwarrior Sol Good Protein Bar

    228 calories | 17g protein | 26g carbs

This is the best overall certified organic vegan protein bar . They have a lot of fiber and are low sugar, using artificial sweeteners instead .

Its protein comes from a combination of brown rice, pea, and quinoa protein to give a nicely balanced amino acid profile.

    Heres how it scored:

    • Protein content With 29.8% of its calories coming from protein, its pretty average when it comes to protein content.
    • Taste score Everything about this bars taste was okay, but not great. It was a bit chalky, and dry, not not terribly so. Its flavor was also fine, but nothing special. Its easy to eat, but not really enjoyable.
    • Cost The cost per bar is pretty good, and looking on a per gram of protein basis doesnt really change the cost compared to other bars. Its pretty good value for your money.

    Clif Builders Protein Bar *

    270 calories | 20g protein | 29g carbs

I didnt order the other 2 top bars in any particular order. Clif Builders bars are easy to find in store, has palm oil, and is soy protein based.

Most Clif bars are vegan, including these protein bars. Just be careful that you dont buy Clifs whey protein bars

Heres a breakdown of its scores:

    • Protein content Of the 270 calories, just under 30% come from protein, which is about average for the bars I reviewed.
    • Taste score This protein bar was easy to rate, it tastes like a candy bar.
    • Cost Not only are the bars on the cheap end individually, but they also contain a lot of protein, so they are actually the cheapest overall bar per 10g of protein.

Of the top 3, its the best tasting bar, but has the lowest protein content. This is due to the high sugar content (contains beet syrup, organic brown rice syrup, and organic cane syrup, which makes it okay as a post-workout bar, but I dont know if Id want to eat it otherwise.

    Larabar Gluten Free Bar

Peanut Butter Chocolate Protein Bars | Vegan, Gluten-Free, Zero-Waste

Larabar believes in using only simple and real ingredients that are delightfully delicious.

While these are not exactly protein bars per se, they are extremely popular with vegans who want a minimal bar that fills a hole after a light workout.

The Larabar Gluten Free Bar is made from just four ingredients: peanuts, dates, sea salt, and chocolate chips, making this one of the most straightforward vegan bars on our lists.

Each one has 6g of protein and 3g of dietary fiber. The sugar count is high in these, though, so be aware of that if you are trying to control your weight.

Not only are the ingredients simple with a Larabar, their packaging fits with an environmental lifestyle too. The company has teamed up with TerraCycle, which means that their wrappers can be both recycled and upcycled, reducing the waste commonly associated with individual packaging.

Naturally, if you are performing strenuous workouts, or simply want a more nutritious bar with greater amounts of protein, these will not be for you.

However, if you want a quick meal replacement bar with very few ingredients, you cant go far wrong with Larabar.

    Vega Protein+ Snack Bar

When you have those moments where you are too busy to sit down, the Vega Protein+ Snack Bar not only gives you protein, but also greens, veggies, vitamins, and fiber too.

Its little wonder these bars have become so popular in such a short space of time.

The problem is that while they offer a more rounded profile, they do fall short when compared to other vegan bars nutritional information. The Vega Protein+ gives you just 11 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber, which is considerably less than some of the other dairy-free protein bars we have looked at here in our list.

That being said, the inclusion of leafy greens, sprouts, peas, grasses, and other vegetables will appeal to many, and each bar boosts your vitamin intake considerably as well, with 11 vitamins hitting at least 25 per cent of your daily intake.

Despite their name, it would probably be fairer to label these as nutrition bars rather than protein, but for those who arent in need of a massive amount of protein the Vegas will definitely hit the spot.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Gluten

Are protein bars full of sugar?

Most store-bought nutrition bars contain added sugars that can be detrimental to fitness goals. Making homemade protein bars allows you to be in control of how much of sugar is added.

Can you substitute nut butters in protein bars?

Swapping out peanut or almond butter for different nut butter is a great way to change the flavor of a classic homemade protein bar. Try using almond-hazelnut butter or cashew butter.

Can whey protein be used in place of vegan?

Whey protein is not interchangeable with vegan due to the way it absorbs. Because vegan protein powder absorbs more liquid than whey protein, the texture of bars will be much different and can normally not be made without tweaking the other ingredients.

Do All Protein Bars Contain Gluten

As Kirkland has shown, you can make a wide variety of delicious protein bars without adding gluten. So then why do so many brands add gluten to their recipes?

Its not so much that they are actively adding gluten but that their base recipes rely on wheat, granola, and other gluten-heavy grains.

Dont think of gluten as an additive. Its a naturally occurring protein native to many common grains, including wheat, rye, barley, and triticalea rye/wheat crossbreed. When its mixed together with water and kneaded into a dough, it creates a sort of glue that holds foods together.

In protein bars, gluten generally finds its way into the recipe from contaminated oats or a wheat-based outer crust.

While oats dont naturally contain gluten, theyre normally packaged and shipped with other gluten-heavy grains and therefore become a source of contamination.
