Oats are a highly nutritious grain with many health benefits.

Theyre a popular breakfast porridge and are also found in granola, muesli, and other foods and snacks.

However, you may wonder whether oats and oatmeal contain gluten.

This article explores whether you can include oats in a gluten-free diet.

Gluten-free diets are very popular.

In fact, surveys reveal that as many as 1530% of people in the United States try to avoid gluten for one reason or another.

Gluten is a family of proteins found in grains, such as wheat, rye, and barley. These proteins give bread and pasta their stretchy, chewy texture .

Most people can eat gluten without any side effects, but these proteins can cause serious health problems for some individuals.

Gluten may cause digestive issues in certain populations because its unique amino acid structure may hinder the digestive enzymes in your gut .

If you have celiac disease, your body launches an autoimmune response to gluten, damaging your intestinal lining .

If youre intolerant to gluten, even a tiny amount is harmful, making a gluten-free diet the only way to avoid serious health issues .

SUMMARY

Gluten is a protein found in grains like wheat, barley, and rye. Most people can tolerate it, but it can harm some individuals.

Can People With Celiacs Eat All Oats

There’s some evidence that certain types of oats may be less toxic to people with celiac disease than others. A Spanish study looked at how components of the immune system reacted to the different oat varieties in people with celiac. That study found some types of oats provoked less of an immune system response than others.

And an Italian study used cell samples from people with celiac to see how those cells reacted to different oat varieties in test tubes. The study concluded that two oat varietiesAvena genziana and Avena potenzadidn’t provoke major celiac-specific immune system reactions, at least in the test tube.

But the researchers cautioned that both oat varieties did seem to cause some low-level immune system changes in the cell samples. Research on all of this is ongoing, but it’s too early to single out particular oat varieties as safer or less safe for us to eat.

Cooking With Gluten Free Oatmeal

Bob s Red Mill Old Fashioned Rolled Oats Whole Grain Gluten Free 32 oz ...

Cooking gluten free oatmeal is exactly the same as cooking with regular oatmeal, as there is no actual difference in the oats themselves. Try some of our favorite oatmeal recipes with any kind of oatmeal that you buy! Of course, if you are cooking for a gluten intolerant person, then it is important to ensure that your recipe does not include any additional ingredients that contain gluten! Watch out for wheat, barley, rye and triticale: you should be safe as long as the recipe does not call for those grains in any form.

In addition to eating it by the bowl, oatmeal is a great alternative ingredient in gluten free baking as well! We love using oatmeal in place of wheat flours in gluten-free recipes like this delicious Wheat Free Oatmeal Cake and these Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies, all gluten free! The oatmeal helps ingredients stick together, a similar purpose to flour in most recipes, and it also crumbles in a delicious, chewy texture which is perfect for muffins, pies, and cookies!

Why Isn’t All Oatmeal Gluten

Since pure oats and pure oatmeal are gluten-free, you’re probably wondering how gluten can get in. The problem is gluten cross-contamination that starts in farmers’ fields and carries on through processing.

Most farmers and food processors who grow and handle oats also grow and handle the gluten grains wheat, barley, and rye. Using the same equipment for both oats and gluten grains means that a tiny amount of gluten winds up in your oatmeal.

Here’s the statement from Quaker Oats regarding this problem: “Yes, oats are naturally gluten-free. However, during farming, transportation, and storage, gluten-containing grains like wheat, rye, barley, and spelt may be unintentionally introduced.”

It’s possible to grow pure oats that are safe on the gluten-free diet, and companies selling certified gluten-free oatmeal are using oats that do not have any gluten cross-contamination. Those should be safe for the majority of people with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity. However, some people will have reactions even with pure oats.

How To Make Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

    Bob

They are quick and easy to make.

  • Whisk the dry ingredients together except for the old fashioned rolled oats
  • Cream the butter with the sugars until fluffy. Careful not to soften butter fully or to warm it. Semi-firm butter is best and will help cookies spread less.
  • Add the dry ingredients into the wet and mix until just combined
  • Fold in the oatmeal and chocolate chips or raisins
  • Scoop out the dough with a cookie scoop. Using the cookie scoop is the easiest way to make these cookies uniform in size and easier to handle as the dough can get sticky
  • Roll the dough from the scoop into balls and place on a lined baking sheet.
  • Bake the cookies until the edges are set and golden. The centre will still look unset and that is fine they will continue to bake even after coming out of the oven while they sit on the hot baking sheet. Make sure to bake them with the oven rack placed in the middle of the oven.
  • Allow them to cool in the baking pan 2-5 minutes and then transfer them directly to cooling rack to cool completely.
  • Cookie baking tips:

    Size matters:

The size you make the cookies will affect the baking time. Making them larger than the recipe calls for will require longer baking time and vice versa.

What Are Rolled Oats Made From

Rolled oats are made from whole grain oats that have been husked, steamed, and rolled flat. Whole grain oats are the closest to what youll find growing in fields, a very firm grain with all four parts intact the husk, bran, endosperm, and germ.

When oats are processed, the husk is removed, leaving only the bran, endosperm, and germ. Each of these provides its own nutritional value. The bran offers fiber, the endosperm gives carbohydrates, and the germ has the grains oils, vitamins, and minerals.

Rolled oats are oats that have been steamed for the shortest amount of time compared to other types of oats and oatmeal, like quick oats and instant oats.

Health Benefits Of Oats: The Original Gluten

Oat grains grow best in cool climates that get lots of rain, which made them a staple part of the diet for England, Scotland and Ireland throughout history. Traditionally eaten as a hot porridge, this whole grain has a mild, sweet flavor and is one of the most naturally satiating foods available. Oats almost never have their bran and germ removed in processing, so whether you eat instant oats, old-fashioned or steel cut oats, youre likely to get all the benefits of the whole grain . Check out this list of the different varieties of oats from the Whole Grain Council to learn more.

    Oats are Naturally Gluten-Free

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Oats do not contain this protein, but can be contaminated with it if they are grown on nearby fields, shipped in the same vehicles or processed on the same equipment as wheat, barley or rye. Only single producers, farmers who plant and process only oats, can be certified as gluten-free, because the risk of contamination is otherwise very high.

Oats Support Heart and Digestive Health

Soluble beta glucan fiber seems to reliably lower cholesterol when it is a part of a diet otherwise low in saturated fat. Beta glucan fibers absorb water in the digestive tract and stick onto bile acids, which are normally re-circulated in our blood stream. Beta glucan helps our bodies better regulate cholesterol levels in our blood, keeping the path through our blood vessels nice and smooth!

Studies show that oats and oatmeal have many health benefits. These include weight loss, lower blood sugar levels and a reduced risk of heart disease.

Contains FiberOats contain dietary fiber. Although its indigestible by your body, fiber helps to regulate digestion and prevent constipation. It may also help control your blood sugar and promote a feeling of fullness after eating, allowing you to cut calories with less hunger. Soluble fiber found in oats is particularly helpful for lowering bad cholesterol levels.

Lower CholesterolOats may lower the risk of heart disease by reducing both total and LDL cholesterol and protecting LDL cholesterol from oxidation.

Lower Blood SugarDue to the soluble fiber beta-glucan, oats may improve insulin sensitivity and help lower blood sugar levels.

Lose WeightOatmeal may help you lose weight by making you feel more full. It does this by slowing down the emptying of the stomach and increasing production of the satiety hormone PYY.

If you make oat flour out of certified gluten-free oats , then yesoat flour is gluten free. Its important that your oats are certified gluten free because oats can be cross-contaminated by grains growing in nearby fields, or contaminated in the factories that process and package them. Certified gluten-free oats are tested and confirmed to be gluten free.

A small percentage of people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance are also sensitive to the protein found in oats, called avenin. Therefore, oat flour is not suitable for everyone following a gluten-free diet. As always, listen to your body and consult with your healthcare providers.
