Surprising Things That Contain Gluten

Chewing gum health effects. simply explained

Learn about our Editorial Policy.

Gluten is a kind of glue that helps food to keep its shape and stay together, so you find it in grains like wheat and pasta. While gluten is a useful ingredient, it can cause issues for those with gluten sensitivities and celiac diseases.

Gluten is a tricky ingredient that can hide in plain sight. And this can cause problems for those with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities. You’re probably familiar with the obvious foods that contain gluten, such as bread, baked goods, crackers, and pasta. But gluten is hiding in a lot of products that you might not expect. For instance, you might find gluten in some personal care products.

People with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity should avoid ingredients like wheat, rye, and barley. Some people with celiac disease are sensitive to oats, too. But there are some other surprising products to avoid that contain gluten.

Is Xanthan Gum Safe To Eat

The short answer: yes.

As scary as thickening agent sounds, Xanthan gum is the product of natural processes .

Xanthan gum is safe to eat and has been certified as a safe food additive in the USA & Europe for almost 50 years .

Typically Xanthan gum is used in very small amounts, making up less than 0.5% of any food product.

Scientists have found that Xanthan gum is a powerful laxative, but only when consumed in the range of 15g/day. A normal gluten-free consumer would never eat this much Xanthan gum and therefore neednt worry.

High-end gourmet chefs have been making use of Xanthan gum for decades in jellies, sauces, spheres and other wonderful creations.

Because Xanthan gum is such an effective thickener, only tiny amounts are required when cooking. If you add too much Xanthan gum to liquid foods, itll make the food undesirably thick and stodgy.

Due to Xanthan gums powerful thickening ability, the FDA has warned parents about using it in foods fed to premature infants. However, this shouldnt concern healthy adults.

Is Juicy Fruit Gum Gluten

In conclusion, we know that this product is gluten-free because it says so on the packaging. We can also tell this because there are no cross-contaminations or ingredients listed that are not gluten-free. There are two types of gluten that are a problem for people who are gluten intolerant. One is a type of protein called gliadin, which is found in wheat and other grains such as barley, rye, spelled, and oats. The other type is a carbohydrate called glutenin, which is present in wheat, barley, and rye. You are probably familiar with gluten from the bread crumbs, flour, pasta, and other products that contain it.

Orbit Gum Belongs To The Mars Company

Despite the huge wind farm in Texas, the non-deforestation policy, and the certification and traceability goals for raw materials, and other sustainable and ethical goals the company has accomplished in recent years we cant deny the fact this company makes its billions with products that exploit animals.

As such, some vegans avoid products that belong to the Mars company or any other company with a similar background. Ive also questioned whether I should or not buy from non-vegan companies/brands. And so I came across an interesting video:

What was said in the video is also happening with a multi-billion dollar company like Mars.

However, were free to make our own decisions, and I know that not every vegan agrees with what was said in the video above.

Summary: Orbit Gum Might Be Vegan

Some websites like Peta2 suggest that some Orbit Gum flavors are vegan.

But I cannot confidently say the same for three reasons:

  • The artificial colors that are a by-product of animal testing
  • Theres a good chance glycerol may come from animal fat
  • And Orbit Gum belongs to the Mars company.

Stricter vegans may avoid Orbit Gum, but casual vegans are probably fine with eating Orbit Gum because it doesnt contain blatant animal-based ingredients.

Frankly, if we were to dive deep into each products ingredients, wed probably find ourselves with a scarce amount of products to consume. I believe that we, as vegans, should definitely make an effort in avoiding animal-based ingredients, but we should also realize that theres only so much we can do from a consumer perspective.

I personally dont feel compelled to avoid every little ingredient, but I make a conscious effort to avoid meat, dairy, eggs, and even honey.

Follow your own convictions!

Lastly, I always appreciate your feedback, so if theres anything Ive written wrong, feel free to pinpoint my mistakes. Ill gladly make changes to this blog post.

Is Juicy Juicy Gluten

I broke the World Record for the Biggest Bubble Gum!

If you want a healthy diet, you should avoid anything that has gluten in it. Gluten is the protein in wheat and rye. All bread and other baked products have it, but not all products contain gluten. A product with gluten is called a grain product. Gluten-free means that the food doesnt contain any grains. You can get foods without gluten by checking the ingredients. For example, a product that says it contains rice or oats is considered gluten-free. Also, be aware of labels that say may contain wheat because this may not mean that the product contains any gluten at all. Some restaurants offer gluten-free food and you should always check to see if they serve it. You should avoid anything that contains gluten because of the possibility that it might cause you to develop an allergy to it.

Gum Brands That Are Not Gluten

This company makes Fruit Stripe and Super Bubble gum. Farley’s and Smathers does not maintain a gluten-free list and only will disclose wheat-containing ingredients on its labels .

Therefore, Farley’s and Smathers products are not recommended for those following a gluten-free diet.

Hershey’s

Hershey’s, a top candy bar manufacturer, also produces Bubble Yum gum and Icebreakers.

However, neither of those products appear on Hershey’s gluten-free list, so you might want to steer clear of them.

Mondelz International, Inc

This company, based in New Jersey, makes the following brands of gum:

  • Bubbaloo

  • Stride

Mondelz International does not test for gluten, according to a customer service representative. The company will identify any wheat, barley, rye, or oat ingredients on the label.

Is Guar Gum Gluten

Xanthan and guar gum have pretty funny names, but they are very important ingredients in gluten-free baking. Both items are naturally gluten-free and are used to provide crucial structural elements for baking including making the dough sticky and elastic, emulsifying liquids and helping batter stick together.

Ingredients In Orbit Gum

Orbit® Gum

The ingredients in Orbit Gum are identical among all flavors.

Heres how the list of ingredients looks like:

GlycerolNatural and Artificial FlavorsColors

Instead of gelatin, Orbit contains soy lecithin that acts as a binding agent. That in itself is a great sign since most non-vegan gums use gelatin as a binding agent. In addition, Orbit Gums dont contain stearic acid, but instead, they have hydrogenated starch hydrolysate.

However, Orbit Gums still contain glycerol which may be derived from an animal source. Natural and artificial flavors may also come from an animal source but in this case, I dont think thats likely considering the gum flavors.

Regardless, heres what the FDA has to say about natural flavors:

The term natural flavor or natural flavoring meanswhich contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products

Lastly, artificial colors are known to have been tested on animals, so as a result, some vegans decide to avoid them.

Is Juicy Fruit Gum Celiac Safe

Juicy Fruit is a brand of chewing gum that has been made for decades. Its been used to treat sore throats and fight off colds. This kind of chewing gum has been found to have some serious side effects. It has been known to cause tooth decay in children. In fact, children with this problem have an increased risk of developing heart disease later in life.

However, some people still want to chew Juicy Fruit and find relief. They feel that it is healthy. This isnt true. If you are worried about getting a sore throat, you can chew some spearmint gum instead.

How Is Xanthan Gum Made

Xanthan gum was discovered by a research team at the Department for Agriculture in the 1960s.

It is created naturally through a process of fermentation using simple sugars and bacteria.

After the fermentation process is complete, the Xanthan gum is separated from the waste, dried and turned into powder. Youll typically find that Xanthan gum comes in a powder format with a similar consistency to baking soda.

In any process of fermentation, a food source is required. Soybean, maize and wheat are often used in the process of fermenting Xanthan gum, but theres no need for your alarm bells to sound.

Even though Xanthan gum may be created using potential allergens, nutrients derived from the soybeans, maize or wheat are consumed by the fermenting bacteria.

This means the end product does not contain any of the source nutrient or allergen which is why it is safe to use in gluten free foods.

Communion Wafer And Wine

Canon law states that holy communion wafers must contain wheat. This is a huge problem if you’re Catholic and have celiac disease. Not only is the wafer itself a concern, but gluten residue may be left behind on the shared cup of sacramental wine.

There are several gluten-free brands of communion wafers available that are used by non-Catholic churches, but the Vatican won’t budge on its wheat rule. They have, however, approved a low-gluten communion wafer. It’s made by Benedictine sisters in Missouri and contains trace amounts of wheat. This satisfies the Vatican’s requirement and may be safe for those with gluten sensitivities, depending on your level of sensitivity. Check with your healthcare provider before using.

What Is Xanthan Gum And Why Is It In Gluten Free Food

For the best part of the last five years I have lived in Thailand. In Thailand, gluten free rice-based dishes are commonplace and ingredients are mostly purchased fresh everyday at wet markets.

Outside of big cities, western dishes are not so popular, and equally-so gluten-free alternatives simply dont exist.

Whilst living in Thailand, I would rarely eat any gluten free breads or biscuits because my local supermarket didnt stock them. I made do without.

So upon returning to England after a half-decade absence, I have been pleasantly surprised at the sudden explosion of gluten free alternative foods.

Initially I was very sceptical anyone who has eaten GF foods in the past has probably experienced the dry, crumbling, falling-apart excuse for bread and biscuits. But lately the products have been pretty darn good.

Better still, in the last year alone, free-from alternatives have become so good that theyre beginning to rival their genuine counterparts.

So how are food producers achieving gluten-free products that are good enough to pass as the real deal?

The answer: Xanthan gum.

Fast Food And Frozen French Fries

Potatoes are gluten-free, but French fries and sweet potato fries may not be. That satisfying crisp you love when you bite into a fry is often thanks to a coating of flour or batter. Some restaurants season fries with spices that contain gluten.

Fries that aren’t coated or seasoned may still be contaminated if they’re not fried in a dedicated fryer. Most restaurants, especially fast-food establishments, use fryers for a variety of breaded foods that are full of gluten, such as breaded chicken nuggets and mozzarella sticks. As a result, cross-contamination can happen, according to a 2021 study.

Before eating French fries at a restaurant, ask your server if they’re gluten free and fried in a dedicated fryer. If not, you might want to opt for a plain baked potato instead. At home, make your own fries or purchase prepared brands that are labeled gluten-free.

Why Does Juicy Fruit Lose Its Flavor

A: Juicy Fruit loses its flavor because it is a type of fruit that has been processed. This processing causes the fruit to lose some of its natural nutrients and chemicals, which are what make the juice taste good in the first place.

Did you know that some gums actually contain gluten?

Crazy, right?

If youre on a gluten free diet, then you need to chew gluten free gum. Yeah, you dont necessarily swallow the gum like you would any other foods but gum and its flavoring can still give you a reaction if its not gluten free.

Thankfully, youre in luck because many gum companies and manufacturers actually create gluten free gum. And best part of all, most of them are already naturally gluten free.

Why Ice Breakers Are Gluten

Simply put, its because most mints dont require gluten or gluten-based ingredients at all.

Think about it the majority of mint products are little candies with peppermint oil, confectioners glaze or some other compound to give them a sheen or glaze, and any other flavorings the producer might decide to include.

Because of this, most mints can safely be eaten if you are extremely sensitive to gluten. This is doubly true when it comes to peppermint-flavored candies, like Ice Breakers Wintergreen and Peppermint flavors.

The one time you have to watch out for gluten when it comes to mints is if they include special flavors or fillings on the inside. Fortunately, most Ice Breakers mints just have outside flavorings, so they are almost certainly gluten-free.

Cosmetic And Dental Products

Most people don’t mind if their makeup contains gluten. However, it’s problematic if you have celiac disease and are sensitive to even small amounts of gluten protein.

The Mayo Clinic reports that, in general, gluten in make-up isn’t a concern for people with celiac disease unless you swallow it. This makes any gluten in make-up concerning because it’s easy to get a smidgen of foundation or blush on your lips that may be swallowed. Since you apply lipstick to your lips, your risk of ingesting some is high. Therefore, you should avoid any cosmetic or dental products containing gluten ingredients.

To avoid gluten in cosmetics and dental products, search the internet for gluten free makeup products and dental products. Read the ingredients on the packaging before buying cosmetics from your favorite store. According to Nadine Grzeskowiak, RN, BSN, CEN, if you see any of these words, the product contains gluten:

  • Avena sativa
  • Yeast extract
