Is Quaker Oatmeal gluten free?

While its true that oats are naturally gluten free, the reason they are controversial stems from the way theyre grown.

Oats are typically grown in rotation with wheat on co-mingled fields used to grow wheat and oats, and the equipment used to harvest and process both grains is shared, too. These shared processes make oats highly susceptible to gluten cross contamination.

This means naturally gluten-free grains of oats are mixed with bits of wheat throughout the manufacturing process, making them no longer free from gluten contamination.

Many companies grow oats on dedicated gluten-free fields or have high-tech means to optically and/or mechanically sort oat grains from wheat .

I will discuss purity vs. commodity oats next, however, regardless if a product contains oats, it must be labeled gluten free in order for it to be safe for someone on a gluten-free diet to eat it.

If its labeled gluten free it means the manufacturer has validated that the oats contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten, the legal limit of gluten allowed in a product according to the FDA.

If a product contains oats is certified gluten free, it means the oats have been validated to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten by a third party like the GFCO.

Regardless of what oats you purchase, purity or commodity, you must ensure the packaging bears a gluten free or, even better, a certified gluten free label.

Quaker Old Fashioned Oats Ingredients

Youll likely already be familiar with Quaker Oats. Theyre a brand that produces a range of oats and oatmeal products. When looking at their standard Old Fashioned Oats, there is just one ingredient. That ingredient is:

  • Whole Grain Rolled Oats

Theyre a great source of fiber and leave you full of energy. Looking at the list of ingredients you may be thinking that theres a chance they may be gluten-free lets take a look.

Can People With Celiacs Eat All Oats

Theres some evidence that certain types of oats may be less toxic to people with celiac disease than others. A Spanish study looked at how components of the immune system reacted to the different oat varieties in people with celiac. That study found some types of oats provoked less of an immune system response than others.

And an Italian study used cell samples from people with celiac to see how those cells reacted to different oat varieties in test tubes. The study concluded that two oat varietiesAvena genziana and Avena potenzadidnt provoke major celiac-specific immune system reactions, at least in the test tube.

But the researchers cautioned that both oat varieties did seem to cause some low-level immune system changes in the cell samples. Research on all of this is ongoing, but its too early to single out particular oat varieties as safer or less safe for us to eat.

Isnt All Oatmeal Gluten

Yes and no. Oats are certainly gluten-free. However, most oatmeal is processed in a plant that also processes rye, barley, and wheat. And, that means cross-contamination can be an issue. If you are gluten intolerant, you need to make sure that the oatmeal you start with says gluten-free on the package.

Im asked almost daily about Cheerios. It is the most accessible cereal brand around, and most Cheerios flavors are labeled gluten free. The brand is also a sponsor of the Celiac Disease Foundation, which is basically an endorsement from one of the leading celiac non-profits in the world.

Its important to understand a few things about Cheerios as you decide whether or not you feel safe consuming them.

First, its important to note that the Canadian Celiac Association recommends that people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity do not consume Cheerios, even if its labeled gluten free, due to concerns about the potential levels of gluten in each box, and due to what is says is General Mills unwillingness to be fully transparent in its testing methods.

Cheerios uses optically- and mechanically-sorted commodity oats, but that isnt what concerns most people. Commodity oats are grown in fields that also grow wheat. This means the oat grains contain quite a bit of wheat as well.

However, in order for a manufacturer to make sure a product contains only gluten-free oats, the oat grains are optically or mechanically sorted to separate the oat grain from the wheat. They are also scrubbed to remove any remnants of wheat gluten. This makes commodity oats more plentiful and much cheaper than purity oats.

Large-sized companies rely on commodity oats to meet larger consumer demand as well as to offer competitive pricing.
