Advisory Regarding Accuracy & Test Repetition

General Mills Rice Chex

There is a small chance that individual test results shown on Is It Truly Gluten Free? may not be accurate. This is due to the fact that gluten test kits themselves are not 100% accurate. Indeed, there is no test that can guarantee completely error-free results. It is also possible that the procedures used for testing may inadvertently introduce factors that could contribute to an inaccurate result. Therefore, while the majority of tests should be accurate, there may be some that are not.

Due to this possibility, you should not assume that an individual test result is accurate. Instead, you should take into consideration the results of all tests that have been performed on a particular product. The percentage graphs shown on the product pages represent exactly that: the combined results of all tests. Also, keep in mind that the more tests that have been performed for a product, the more accurate the combined percentage result will be.

These results should not be used by themselves to determine whether a food product is safe for consumption. These results simply represent another piece of information to help you make your own informed decision. You should consider other factors such as whether a product has been certified gluten-free, or if it is labeled gluten-free. You should also be sure to consult the ingredient label. The test results shown here are not intended to be a substitute for these other indicators, or a replacement for due diligence on your part.

How To Buy Gluten

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley and these grains derivatives.

Cereal is a classic go-to breakfast food usually made out of wheat, and so many popular brands on your grocery shelves arent actually gluten-free. Even if the cereal pieces or flakes are made of corn or rice, the cereal may contain wheat-, rye- or barley-based ingredients, like malt , according to the Celiac Disease Foundation.

Youll want to take several precautions before buying a new box. First, look for a gluten-free label on the front of the box. This label is regulated by the Food & Drug Administration and assures that the food youre eating has less than 20 parts per million of gluten, which is generally safe for people with celiac disease and people with gluten sensitivity.

If you want even more reassurance, buy brands that are labeled Certified Gluten-Free by third parties, such as the Gluten-Free Certification Organization . The GFCO only certifies foods that have 10 ppm of gluten or less, according to the organizations website.

If you cant find a label or seal on the package, check the ingredient list and allergen statement for any gluten culprits.

Are Corn Flakes Gluten-Free?

The popular cereal is mostly made of corn, which is gluten-free, but Corn Flakes are not gluten-free.

Are Cheerios Gluten Free

Cinnamon Rice Chex Treats ~ Gluten Free

Im often asked if Cheerios are gluten free because there is a lot of confusion about the brand. A lot of people with celiac disease refuse to eat it.

Cheerios are not only labeled gluten free, but also each packaging also displays, Proud sponsor of the Celiac Disease Foundation. As you know, when the Celiac Disease Foundation accepts money from Cheerios, it is clearly endorsing the product as safe for people with celiac disease.

On top of the gluten-free label and the endorsement from the Celiac Disease Foundation, I independently tested Cheerios for hidden gluten. The Nima Sensor did not detect any gluten .

Still, some people in the celiac disease community are wary of Cheerios. I have been skeptical myself, although I think that feeling is waning. To be honest with you, I believe everyone should be able to make their own decision about the safety of Cheerios without being judged or shamed.

The reason many people in the celiac disease community are skeptical of Cheerios is because General Mills uses commodity oats to make its cereal. Oats, while naturally gluten free, are often cross contaminated with gluten throughout the harvesting and manufacturing processes. You can read more about it in this article, Are Oats Gluten Free?

General Mills, like other companies, optically or mechanically sorts its commodity oats to remove the oat grain from any potential gluten grains that might have contaminated the crop.

Star with your cereal. Wheat Chex is NOT gluten-free so were ditching it and sticking with 3-1/2 cups each gluten-free Rice and Corn Chex, plus 2 cups gluten-free Os cereal. We loved this Natures Path brand it gets way more crunchy in the oven compared to regular Os!

Add the cereals to the largest bowl you own, along with 1 cup gluten-free peanuts. Peanuts can be difficult to find gluten-free That said, I buy certified gluten-free peanuts from Nuts.com.

Next, in a microwave-safe bowl combine 6 Tablespoons melted butter or Earth Balance Vegan Butter to keep the recipe dairy-free, which is what I did on account of Lincolns dairy allergy with 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce2 teaspoons seasoned salt plus 1/2 teaspoon each garlic and onion powders. Drizzle the mixture over the cereals then stir with a spatula until the cereals are evenly coated.

By the way, the original Chex Mix recipe calls for seasoned salt which is CRAZY easy to make at home. Its just 1-1/2 Tablespoons salt, 3/4 teaspoons each paprika and garlic powder, and 1/4 teaspoon each sugar and onion powder. I just looked at the ingredient list of Lawrys online and blended my own batch. SO GOOD. Youll have some leftover after using 2 teaspoons for the Chex Mix recipe so use it on chicken, popcorn anything, really!

Scoop the Chex Mix into an airtight container then keep within arms reach on the kitchen counter for 3-4 days, or pour into a bowl and let your family go to town!
