Is Breyers Ice Cream Gluten Free

Many Breyers ice creams are labeled gluten free, which means they contain less than 20 ppm of gluten and meet the FDAs gluten-free labeling requirements.

Not all Breyers products are gluten free, and Breyers does not claim to have a dedicated gluten-free manufacturing facility.

On the Breyers website, Breyers says, stringent criteria are used to ensure that the products that claim to be gluten free are handled properly.

At the BREYERS® facility, there are systems in place to prevent cross-contact of gluten in products that make a gluten-free claim. They include employee allergen training, ingredient segregation, cleaning procedures and production planning. The gluten-free program within the factory includes validation and verification activities which include allergen testing on both the product and the production lines.

Here is how Breyers Mint Chocolate Chip fared against the Nima Sensor. Yep, Nima is all smiles again!

Is Tillamook Ice Cream Gluten Free

When I first wrote this article, I didnt include another popular ice cream brand, Tillamook. I have since visited the Tillamook farm in Oregon, and decided to add this brand to my list.

Please note that I have not tested Tillamook for hidden gluten, but I did want to share what Tillamook says about gluten and other allergens on its website:

All Tillamook Ice Cream flavors contain milk, and most contain pasteurized egg yolks as well. Some also contain other major allergens like wheat, tree nuts, peanuts, and soy. In compliance with federal law, any Tillamook product that contains major allergens like these must clearly state so in the ingredients listing on the packaging, so please be sure to check the label!

Please note that all of our ice cream flavors are produced with the same equipment. Production schedules are carefully prepared by considering allergens and their potential risks. Equipment is thoroughly sanitized and swab-tested after producing ice cream flavors that contain nuts or other major allergens.

For all Tillamook products, there are strict GMPs in place which are designed to prevent any cross-contamination of major allergens on shared equipment lines. This includes swab-testing the equipment between production runs to ensure there are no allergen remnants present.

    What To Look For

Sauces and baked goods, like cookie dough in ice cream, are generally a giveaway of gluten. Look for ingredients such as wheat flour and barley malt syrup, which contain gluten. Many brands will also include a note in the ingredients section about allergens like gluten or soy.

While ice cream that doesnt have any ingredients that contain gluten listed on the label is safe for people with gluten sensitivity or people who are hoping to avoid gluten, there is still a risk of cross-contamination. People with celiac disease should avoid them.

Cross-contamination is a major concern for the 3 million people in the United States with celiac disease. Even microscopic amounts of gluten can cause a reaction, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. For people with celiac disease, its extremely important that ice cream be labeled as gluten-free, or that it has a gluten-free certification. All foods labeled as gluten-free, free of gluten, no gluten, or without gluten must have less than 20 parts per million of gluten, according to

Be especially careful of any cookies or cookie dough ingredients.

What Ice Creams Are Gluten Free

We all scream for ice cream, right? Wrong! If youre on a gluten-free diet, you must be careful about eating ice cream. In this post, Ill discuss what ice creams are gluten free. Please always read labels carefully to ensure any product is safe for your dietary restrictions. This post contains affiliate links. Please see my disclosures.

However, as someone with celiac disease, an autoimmune condition that causes my immune system to mistakenly attack the healthy tissue surrounding my small intestine everytime I eat gluten, I must follow a strict, medically-necessary gluten-free diet.

Gluten is found in many products, even ice cream, and it doesnt always go by its common names like wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats.

Gluten is also hidden in ingredients like malt, natural flavors, brown rice syrup and yeast extract.

In this article, Ill talk about whether or not ice cream is gluten free, what brands you can trust, and I also tested several popular ice cream brands for hidden gluten with my Nima Sensor.

The Nima Sensor is a portable gluten-detecting device that enables you to test a small portion of your food for hidden gluten. You can learn more about it in my article, 13 Things to Know About the Nima Sensor.

Tillamook cheese states on their website that their cheese is not processed with any major allergens, besides milk, of course. This would mean that their cheese is gluten free. Their dairy is also sourced from farms that commit to not pumping their cows with artificial hormones.

That being said, Tillamook cheese does advise that there is potential for cross contamination due to the fact that they also process ice cream in their facility. The equipment that processes the cheese does not come in contact with those allergens though. Tillamook also says they take as many precautions as possible to avoid cross contamination by testing and cleaning their equipment thoroughly.

My family and I love Tillamook cheese and were excited to visit the factory and eat at the cafe there, but were a little underwhelmed. We were there the day after Thanksgiving and there were hardly any workers actually making the cheese in the observation area. Then we ordered mac & cheese and a grilled cheese sandwich in the cafe and the sauce on the mac was bland, and the grilled cheese pretty standard. We were imagining something a little more gourmet , and wished we had saved our calories for the ice cream, which was good, but something you can get at the grocery store. I still love the cheese they make, but probably wouldnt go out of my way to visit the factory again.

    Is Ice Cream Gluten

Is ice cream gluten free? Many people ask this question because they love ice cream but are concerned about its potential gluten content. Unfortunately, it is not an easy yes or no answer. There are just too many ice cream brands with ingredients that vary from one flavor to the next. Some varieties of ice cream have gluten while others are gluten-free. However, lets take a look at what some popular ice cream brands have to say about gluten in their products.

What To Watch For When Buying Gluten

When buying GF ice cream, youll want to avoid anything with cookies , brownies, or cone pieces unless the product is from one of the certified gluten-free ice cream brands.

Many sauces may be thickened with wheat flour, which contains gluten.

Additionally, malted products are made of malted barley and wheat flour, which are not safe for celiacs or those with non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Avoid malt in any form, even if the label lists malt powder.

Remember, the allergen information on the label does not always contain enough data to keep you safe if you have to avoid gluten. Thats because manufacturers only have to list the top eight allergens, which doesnt include gluten . Barley malt extract, for example, contains no wheat ingredients, so wheat wouldnt be listed on the allergen label of a product containing malt but no wheat. The absence of wheat does not necessarily make the product safe.

Additionally, look for phrases like, Manufactured in a facility that processes wheat, because you could get sick from cross contamination, depending on how sensitive you are.

Grab a gluten-free ice cream cone and heap that sucker with one of these safe ice cream options. But before you do, comment below and let us know which of these gluten-free ice cream brands you like the most.

Why Would Cheese Not Be Gluten Free

Tillamook White Chocolate Raspberry Ice Cream (56 oz)

Many varieties of pre-shredded cheese use binding agents to prevent the shreds from sticking together. Unfortunately, much of the binding agents are wheat derived, such as wheat starch or modified food starch, thus adding gluten to the cheese. However, Tillamook cheese uses potato starch to bind their shredded cheeses, so no gluten is added in the shredding or bagging process.

Other than cheese that uses binding agents, almost all varieties of cheese are gluten free. It is possible that cottage cheese and blue cheese could contain traces of gluten depending on how they are made, so its important to read the label.

Tillamook Cheese Comes Mostly From Cows Kept In Concrete And Dirt Feedlots Not Green Pastures Lawsuit Says

The Animal Legal Defense Fund filed a lawsuit Monday asking a Portland judge to order the Tillamook County Creamery Association to stop advertising that its Tillamook-brand cheese, ice cream, butter and other dairy products come from cows happily grazing on the rolling green pastures of the Oregon Coast.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund says thats deceptive marketing: More than of the milk for Tillamook-brand products comes from cows on the opposite side of the state including from the nations largest industrialized dairy factory farm in Boardman, 230 miles away in the desert of eastern Oregon, according to the lawsuit. The Threemile Canyon facility with 32,000 dairy cows and a total of 70,000 cattle is comprised of concrete or barren dirt feedlots and robotic carousels that milk the continuously confined animals, according to the suit.

Boardman is flat, arid, and often swelteringly hot nothing like Tillamook County, the suit states. And the mega-dairy in Boardman is so large that it is visible from space.

Within a month, the Animal Legal Defense Fund plans to amend its lawsuit to ask for $200 in compensation for every Oregonian who has allegedly been misled by Tillamooks marketing campaign, said Amanda Howell, staff attorney for the fund. Because Tillamook products are nearly ubiquitous across the states grocery stores, that could be hundreds of thousands of Oregon consumers, Howell said.

How Do You Soften Ice Cream For A Cake

To spread the ice cream layer of an ice cream cake, you need the ice cream to be soft to create a smooth layer that will “stick” to the cake. Scoop the ice cream into a large bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes. Stir with a rubber spatula, pressing it against the sides until it’s smooth, but still very thick, almost like mashed potatoes. Now the ice cream is ready to spread into an even layer!

    Is Ice Cream Gluten Free

    INSIDE Tillamook Creamery in Oregon

Store bought ice cream is typically gluten free as its primarily made of sugar, milk, cream and sometimes eggs. All these ingredients are naturally gluten free and safe for people with celiac disease to eat.

A plain ice cream flavor, like vanilla or chocolate, is typically fine and free from the gluten protein, but the worry comes when cookies, flavorings, and other questionable ingredients are added to the mix.

This is why you must carefully read ingredient labels to decode if something is safe or not safe for you.

Eating ice cream at an ice cream shop can be a dicey experience for those with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities.

You must be careful as ice cream shops are notorious for cross contamination. Even if the shop owner uses a clean scooper to grab a scoop of ice cream for you, its possible that a previous scooper touched the gluten-free and gluten containing tubs, putting all the ice cream at risk for gluten contact.

Its just not safe to eat scooped ice cream from an ice cream shop .

Your best bet for a safe ice cream experience is to buy pre-packaged ice cream at the grocery store.

If all your friends are stopping at Baskin Robbins or Cold Stone for ice cream, you can make a quick run into a grocery store and grab a pint for yourself. Its safer and youll get to enjoy ice cream right along with everyone else.
