Easy Five Ingredient Homemade Granola
Here are the five simple ingredients you need to make this easy granola recipe:
Oats. I prefer to use the large flake oats for granola. They have a better texture and lend a nuttier flavour than quick oats.
Peanut Butter. My peanut butter of choice is the drippy, crunchy natural variety, meaning the label says “peanuts” and that is it.
*TIP* Once you have opened you peanut butter jar, store it upside down in your fridge. This will prevent the oil from settling on the bottom and will help to keep the peanut butter smooth and soft instead of a hard, solid chunk.
Maple Syrup. I buy the big ole container from Costco. Done.
Vanilla. It is always a nice addition, in my humble opinion.
These three things melt into one over low heat on the stove.
The last ingredient is cinnamon and salt. Yes those are technically two things but you get the idea. Stir those seasonings in with the oats in a mixing bowl.
Mix it all together well and spread it out on a parchment lined baking sheet.
Pop it in the oven and let the magic happen.
Have a bowl with some milk and I’ll bet you can’t resist slurping up the milk at the bottom of the bowl.
This recipe is too simple not to try. It’s vegan and can be gluten free if you ensure your oats are certified gluten free and use a plant based milk.
I now own my own copy of Mary Poppins and plan on watching it this weekend with a nice bowl of this granola.
What Ingredients Do You Need To Make This Gluten Free Granola Recipe
For this recipe, youll need the following ingredients:
1. 2 Cups of Gluten Free Oats
Gluten Free oats are pretty easy to get hold of these days. Most supermarkets have an own-brand version in either 500g or 1kg packs, but you can also buy a branded version such as the Gluten Free Quaker Oats, so long as theyre the original version and not a pre-mixed or pre-made porridge. For this recipe, you can use an affordable version of Gluten Free oats such as Tescos own, however, Id highly recommend grabbing yourself a rolled outs version, because these have much larger flakes and create a more crunchy gluten free granola product at the end. 2. 1/4 Cup of Honey
You can use any honey you have to hand for this recipe. The only thing youll need to make sure of is that its runny honey because it acts as part of the coating mixture for the oats. If you only have set honey on hand, pop the jar into a bowl full of hot water for 20 minutes or so and youll have runny honey in no time.
3. 1/4 Cup of Desiccated Coconut
You can pick up a bag of desiccated coconut in any supermarket these days, but if you want the best price I would highly recommend picking up your nuts and seed products in either Lidl or Aldi, because theyre a great quality but a really reasonable price.

Are Quaker Oats Gluten
Quaker Oats are manufactured by the Quaker Oats Company and some of their products are gluten-free. While oats naturally do not have gluten in them, due to manufacturing products with lots of others that contain wheat and other gluten containing ingredients, some cross-contamination can occur.
Fortunately, the Quaker Oats Company has made an effort to provide a few of their products fully certified gluten-free! Just make sure to look for the gluten-free label on the front. It is important to note though that some people may still have issues because of the oats.

1. As I mentioned above in the first section, if you want to get the best results from this recipe in terms of texture and crunch, I highly recommend sourcing rolled oats that are gluten free rather than using the smaller version which a lot of supermarkets sell. If you want an idea where to buy this type of GF oats, try Waitroses own 1kg bag of GF rolled oats which are £4. Theyre really delicious and a really great price. 2. If you want to add a little more ginger, cinnamon or orange juice than is stated in the recipe, you could double these quantities for some stronger flavours. I sometimes do this and I also like to switch out the vanilla extract for an almond extract for a hint of something nutty instead of vanilla! Obviously, if you want to keep this recipe nut-free, then stick to the vanilla extract! However, if youre like me and dont have any nut allergies, this could be a good ingredient switch-out to try as well.

Heres What Youll Need To Make These Granola Bars:

- Mini Chocolate Chips: Mini is key here are the regular-sized will be too big for the perfect bite! If you cant find any near you, chopping up your favorite vegan chocolate bar also works well.

- I used an 8×8-inch baking dish for this and cut 12 rectangular bars, but you can cut the bars in whatever amount and shape youd like, depending on your preference and your baking dish.
- Chilling this recipe is necessary for the bars to set: I know you will be tempted to dig in right away but skipping out on this step will result in crumbly bars.
- Dont stir the chopped marshmallows and vegan chocolate chips into the bars until you have incorporated the wet mixture! If you mix them in too early they will start to melt.

Can People With Celiacs Eat All Oats
There’s some evidence that certain types of oats may be less toxic to people with celiac disease than others. A Spanish study looked at how components of the immune system reacted to the different oat varieties in people with celiac. That study found some types of oats provoked less of an immune system response than others.
And an Italian study used cell samples from people with celiac to see how those cells reacted to different oat varieties in test tubes. The study concluded that two oat varietiesAvena genziana and Avena potenzadidn’t provoke major celiac-specific immune system reactions, at least in the test tube.
But the researchers cautioned that both oat varieties did seem to cause some low-level immune system changes in the cell samples. Research on all of this is ongoing, but it’s too early to single out particular oat varieties as safer or less safe for us to eat.

Why Isn’t All Oatmeal Gluten
Since pure oats and pure oatmeal are gluten-free, you’re probably wondering how gluten can get in. The problem is gluten cross-contamination that starts in farmers’ fields and carries on through processing.
Most farmers and food processors who grow and handle oats also grow and handle the gluten grains wheat, barley, and rye. Using the same equipment for both oats and gluten grains means that a tiny amount of gluten winds up in your oatmeal.
Here’s the statement from Quaker Oats regarding this problem: “Yes, oats are naturally gluten-free. However, during farming, transportation, and storage, gluten-containing grains like wheat, rye, barley, and spelt may be unintentionally introduced.”
It’s possible to grow pure oats that are safe on the gluten-free diet, and companies selling certified gluten-free oatmeal are using oats that do not have any gluten cross-contamination. Those should be safe for the majority of people with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity. However, some people will have reactions even with pure oats.

How Do You Make The Gluten Free Granola Recipe
Steps 1-4:Lets assume youve gathered all your ingredients together and are ready to cook!
1. The first thing youll need to do is turn on the oven to 150c conventional/130c fan/300f/gas mark 2. Then, grab a medium-sized bowl. I used a cereal bowl in the demo below. Add your extra virgin olive oil, vanilla extract, orange juice, and honey to the bowl and mix it up until well combined.
2. Next, grab a bigger bowl, such as the mixing bowl Ive used in the demo below. To this second bowl, youll want to add your oats, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, salt, ginger powder and cinnamon powder.
3. Once youve finished with the second step, add your liquid honey and oil mixture into the bowl along with the oats and seeds mixture, then mix well until thoroughly combined and all the oats are coated in this lovely orange goodness.
4. When this is done, grab yourself a non-stick baking tray and tip the contents of the bowl onto it, spreading the mixture out evenly and completely flat.
5. Pop this tray into your pre-heated oven for 15 minutes. Set a timer!
6. When your timer goes off, take your tray out of the oven but leave the oven on, because youll be returning your granola to it again in a moment. Place on a pan stand and add your desiccated coconut, your mixed dried fruits , then mix again until well combined. Make sure you spread your mixture out flat again and even before returning to the oven for a further 15 minutes. Set another timer!
Can You Eat Oatmeal If You Have Celiac
So can someone with celiacs eat oats? In most cases, you can eat oats if you have celiac disease. But to make things even more complicated, a small percentage of people with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity also react to avenin, a protein found in oats, which means they may need to add oats to their list of prohibited grains.
It’s not clear how many people with celiac disease also react to oats. One small 2015 study estimates found 8% of celiac patients reacted to oat ingestion. However, the same study found that avenin proteins in barley were much more likely to cause an immune response. The authors said low-level oat consumption is unlikely to cause a relapse of celiac symptoms.
Here’s what the experts have to say about oats.
The National Celiac Association says people with celiac disease should be cautious. “Currently, we recommend that newly diagnosed patients avoid consumption of oats until it can be clearly demonstrated that their celiac disease is well controlled. … At that point, under physician guidance, the gradual addition of uncontaminated labeled gluten-free oats up to 50 grams/day may be attempted.”
The Celiac Disease Foundation says, “Research indicates that pure, uncontaminated oats consumed in moderation are tolerated by most people with celiac disease. Look for oats specifically labeled gluten-free in all products containing oats, including granolas and granola bars.”
