Is Brown Rice Gluten

One-Pot Mexican Brown Rice (Vegan, Gluten Free, Damn Delicious!)

A somewhat odd question that actually comes up quite often is brown rice gluten-free? Brown rice is inherently gluten-free, however, there are certain instances where it can come into contact with gluten and cause issues.

Gluten is a sticky type of protein that any average person can ingest without experiencing health issues, however, those with high sensitivity levels will find it difficult to do this. With the modern-day emphasis on fiber-rich, heart-healthy diets, whole grain foods like brown rice are increasingly becoming popular.

This product features all the 3 components of rice grain including the seed kernel also known as endosperm, the nutrient-rich germ center, and the fiber-rich outer hull referred to as bran. All these parts are free from gluten forms that can trigger sensitivity or autoimmune disorders such as Celiac Disease.

Brown rice can be a healthy alternative for those who are on a gluten-free diet. However, it is important to keep the following things in mind.

Easy Baked Brown Rice

Since this oven baked brown rice recipe is a staple in our house, and has been for years, I thought I had better get it on the blog! I never really liked brown rice until I started making my brown rice in the oven. Its the easiest way to make perfect brown rice too!

I found the idea for baking rice in this way from Alton Brown. I always loved his Good Eats show and how he researches the best ways to make things. The main change that Ive made to Altons baked rice recipe is that I use a gluten-free chicken broth instead of just water to bake the rice in.

The gluten-free chicken broth adds incredible flavor to the brown rice, making this the perfect side dish for so many recipes. I use this recipe to make rice for my gluten-free Chicken Broccoli Rice Casserole, gluten-free Sweet and Sour Chicken, gluten-free Sweet Chicken and many other recipes.

I honestly dont make rice any other way than this anymore. I even got rid of my rice cooker! Baking brown rice is so simple, fail-proof and delicious! It always turns out perfectly every time.

Before I get to how to make this, I must answer the question of is brown rice gluten-free? Yes! Brown rice is gluten-free. I prefer to buy from companies that clearly identify their products as certified gluten-free, so I dont have to worry about cross-contact with other grains.

Ingredient Notes for this Baked Brown Rice Recipe:

Why I Choose Not To Use Brown Rice

I have searched high and low for a gluten free all purpose flour recipe that does NOT contain brown rice flour. I finally came to the realization that I would have to make my own gluten free all purpose flour recipe if I wanted it not to have brown rice.

Why am I looking to leave out the brown rice? Plain and simple, I do not digest brown rice well. It has too much fiber for me and I quickly become bloated and start to have digestive issues after I have consumed it.

Listening to your bodies language is essential for good health. This is my body telling me that brown rice and I do not mixso there you have it, that is why I was in search for a gluten free all purpose flour recipe without brown rice.

What Is Italian Venere Rice

This is actually Italian black rice that when it cooks up, turns purple! It happens to come from Lombardy and Piedmont. Lombardy region is where my husband is from. Its also known as black Venus rice . When it cooks up it turns from black to purple and it has a sweet and nutty flavor .

So there was a container leftover plain, and a container leftover that had fava and broccoli in it. That was a one of our side dishes from the night before. I combined both containers of the cooked rice, but I dont list the broccoli and fava . IF you do not have Italian black Venere rice on hand, use whatever rice you have!

Now it was TOTALLY delicious with the broccoli/fava, so if you happen to have any cooked up on hand, toss it in! I believe in not wasting any thing and like I said, you could customize this to your taste.

I am one of those people that have most every thing on hand to make a rice stuffing. I already mentioned the cooked up rice. I also happened to have the squash, cranberries , apples, almond slivers-it is all warmly spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, and pops of fresh herbs .

These comforting flavors make a perfect holiday dish for your small gathering . And there will be leftovers! It is so good that you may skip the main course and just enjoy this! You could also make this any time of the week even as a main dish and the enjoy the leftovers a few more times over the week.

Contamination In The Kitchen

Gluten Free Brown Rice Bread

Gluten-free brown rice becomes cross-contaminated with gluten when something in the kitchen that touched gluten then touches the rice. For example, if you make a batch of dough in a bowl using wheat flour, wipe it out and then use that same bowl to mix up brown rice and chopped veggies, leftover gluten molecules on the bowl can leach into the brown rice. Or if you have a spoon you used to scoop croutons, you can contaminate brown rice with gluten if you use the same spoon to stir it. Cross-contamination like this can happen in commercial kitchens when you go out to eat, too. This is why it’s imperative to let your server know your food has to be gluten-free.

Ive Heard A Lot Of News Reports Regarding Arsenic In Food Products What About Arsenic In Rice

Arsenic is a chemical element that is ubiquitous and has always been present in air, water, rocks and soil, which is how plants absorb it, regardless of whether the farming method is conventional or organic. Because it is everywhere in the environment, it is unavoidable in food and has always been present in the worldwide food supply. Dietary exposure to arsenic comes from a variety of different sources, including fruit, fruit juice, vegetables, rice, wheat, flour, corn, beer, wine and water. Arsenic exposure from food is 80 percent lower than that determined to be safe in drinking water. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration continually monitors the U.S. food supply, including rice and rice products, to assure food is safe. Current science points to rice as a healthy and nutritious food that contributes only a minor amount of arsenic to the human diet. The safety of our products is a top priority.

Types Of Rice You Should Never Eat

If your taste buds veer towards flavored versions then you are officially entering gluten turf. Flavored rice mixes contain wheat-based ingredients like thickeners and soy-sauce that can contaminate it with gluten.

Most manufacturers of rice who are diligent about protecting their products from cross-contamination add the gluten-free label as a USP and a feather to their collar.

Not only does this help clear the doubt in the minds of the discerning shopper, it also provides an added impetus to the sales.

Just because the product is rice based, that doesnt make it gluten-free as many packaged rice products contains ingredients like spices, and even sauces that sometimes contain gluten in extremely high amounts.

Keep a look out for products that are also labeled wheat-free, they too can, and quite often do contain gluten.

Can Brown Rice Flour Be Substituted With White Rice Flour

Is Brown Rice Gluten Free? Plus best brown rice options!

As I mentioned before, white rice is rice that has had the bran and germ removed. For the flour, this results in a finer consistency and less of a nutty flavor.

If you are making bread and cookies, go with brown rice flour, but for cakes or anything youd like a lighter texture for, use white rice flour.

You can use this method to make white rice flour, just replace it with organic white long-grain, jasmine, or basmati rice.

Why Is Arsenic Dangerous

Arsenic was popularized as a murder weapon in the movie Arsenic and Old Lace.It is tasteless, odorless, and looks like sugar crystals. In large enough doses, arsenic is deadly, though most of my experience deals with chronic low dose arsenic exposure creating chronic health issues. Lets differentiate the fact that arsenic comes in two flavors:

  • Organic these forms are relatively nontoxic and prominently found in seafood. They are excreted from the body via the kidneys.
  • Inorganic arsenic This form of arsenic is the real danger, and it is the form commonly found in rice-based products. It exerts damage by interfering with at least 200 different enzyme systems in the body. Many of these are critical in producing energy and regulating DNA. It is also a known human carcinogen . Chronic exposure to even low levels of arsenic can cause systemic multi-organ disease and damage including the liver, kidney, heart, lung, muscles, nervous system, and GI tract. Exposure to inorganic arsenic comes from rice , contaminated drinking water, pesticides, insecticides, and fungicides. It is important to note that even organically grown rice can contain high levels of arsenic because it can be found at high levels in soil depending on where it is grown.

    • Brown rice flour is slightly heavier than white rice flour, and thats because it is made from whole grain. While it is a superb option for bread, brownies, and cookies, it is not the best choice for airy desserts.

Rice Dishes At Self Service Buffets And Whole Foods:

Anytime you eat out at buffet where the customers have access to service spoons, you need to look out for gluten contamination. Have you ever noticed how people at Whole Foods think its ok to grab a scoop of pasta and then use the same spoon to take some rice and put in their plate? Have you ever tried to grab some kind of rice from a container and noticed that it was dirty with pieces of a different dish?

Cross-contact can easily occur in buffet bins because other shoppers that are simply not aware of the issue use the same scoop for both gluten-free and gluten-containing grains.

What Does It Mean To Be Gluten Free

Technically, gluten is a protein formed in certain cereal grains like wheat, barley and spelt which are ground into flour for foods like bread, pizza and pasta. Those foods do naturally contain gluten to help them keep their shape and provide a bit of flavor. However, for some, those cereal grains are often difficult to digest and process making it important to know if certain foods contain gluten or not.
