Will I Go Through Gluten Withdrawal If I Start Eating Gluten
Theres no scientific evidence to suggest that people actually go through withdrawal when they stop eating gluten. Some people report feeling dizziness, nausea, extreme hunger and even anxiety and depression when they suddenly go from eating a lot of gluten to being gluten-free. These symptoms usually go away after a few weeks on a gluten-free diet, but talk to your health care provider if they persist.
Where To Buy Gluten Free Bread
Often one of the hardest aspects of a gluten free diet is finding a bread substitute that doesnt crumble before it reaches your mouth.
Fortunately, there are now options that can give any gluten-loaded counterparts a run for their money.
For the widest selection, head to a health food store. For example, at Holland & Barrett we sell gluten free loaves, bread mixes and flours.
In addition, most supermarkets will also now offer various bread options in a free-from aisle.

Ingredients + Items Needed To Make This Gluten
- Mashed bananas from extra ripe and freckled bananas. The more spots and browner the bananas are the better! That means they will add extra sweetness.
- Eggs you can also use flax eggs here instead.
- Extra virgin olive oil the main star of this recipe. All of my other banana bread recipes on the blog dont use this so feel free to peak around for other ideas if you dont have olive oil on hand.
- Coconut sugar I havent tested a liquid sweetener here but I do think you need the grainier one. You can also use cane sugar
- Gluten-free oat flour I havent tested other subs but spelt flour would work well since that is a 1:1 sub for oat flour. If you have almond flour, this recipe is great! And this blog post is helpful on oat flour!

Look Out For Additives And Opt For A Shorter Ingredients List
Does the ingredient list resemble a science experiment with all the di-, oxy-, and hydrogenated foods or is it filled with foods your grandmother would recognise? Gluten-free bread is a processed food, theres no way around that. However, you CAN find breads based on simple ingredients, and in my opinion, the shorter the ingredients list the better! Your digestion will be a lot smoother when your body doesnt have to break down weird things that your grandparents could probably only find in a science lab.

The Killer Bread That Almost Lived Up To Its Name
July 14, 2012 by Jeanne
Today I was served some of Daves Killer Bread at a restaurant. As it turns out, the name of the bread is unfortunately close to the truth for me. The owner of the restaurant was so happy when she heard I was gluten intolerant because she said that she just started carrying gluten-free bread made by Daves. She said that she was told by the company that the bread was gluten-free. As it turns out, the bread she serves is the spelt bread. As you may know, spelt is an older form of wheat and it contains gluten. When I started having my reaction, the owner called Daves to double check that the bread was gluten-free. This time the guy at the company admitted that it contained gluten.
As you know, I have a life-threatening allergy to wheat in addition to a gluten-intolerance. I had to be rushed to the hospital to treat the anaphylaxis from the allergywhich can be fatal. This is not something to play round with. I was very lucky that it wasnt worse.
FYI: If you go to Daves site, they do not claim that their bread is gluten-free, but they do have some tricky line editing in the description of the bread that makes their spelt bread look like its gluten-free if you dont read it carefully. And a Google search comes up with the line, under Daves site, that says, Good Seed Ancient Grain is gluten-free.
ADDED:Heres a cut-and-paste of the bread description on their site:
PS: This happened in 2012. Im closing the comments to this post.
What Is A Gluten
A gluten-free diet excludes any foods that contain gluten, which is a protein found in wheat and several other grains. It means eating only whole foods that dont contain gluten, such as fruits, vegetables, meat and eggs, as well as processed gluten-free foods like gluten-free bread or pasta.
Gluten is a protein naturally occurring in certain foods, but it can also be added to foods during processing for texture, explains Rajagopal. Gluten can be used as a binding agent and flavoring, so you can sometimes find it in foods you wouldnt expect. In addition to foods like pizza, pasta, cereal and baked goods, gluten can be in everything from soy sauce and ice cream to certain medications, beauty products and dietary supplements.
Some people think going gluten-free means not eating any carbohydrates, but this isnt the case. Lots of foods that contain carbs, such as rice, potatoes and beans, dont contain gluten.

Are Whole Grains Gluten Free
Its important to note that not all grains are off-limits if youre gluten intolerant. Although whole wheat, rye, and barley are off the menu, there are plenty of other whole grains to choose from that may be easier for you to digest.
These whole grains often feature in healthy gluten free bread recipes.
But What If I Cant Eat Dairy
Although gluten free recipes generally do better when they contain dairy, heres a simple change you can make for a delicious loaf of banana bread thats both dairy free and gluten free :
Just swap the buttermilk for a non-dairy milk of your choosing, especially one that has a creamy texture. My favorite is cashew milk. You can also try lite coconut milk. I dont recommend almond milk for this recipe

How To Know If Your Bread Is Gluten Free
Nowadays gluten free bread will look very similar to your traditional loaf. So, the best way to tell whether a bread contains gluten is to look out for any off-limits grains on the products food label. Heres where to look:
- First, check the allergen warning for wheat.
- Next look at the ingredients list. If wheat, spelt, barley, or rye are listed anywhere in the ingredients, the bread contains gluten. But there are also some less familiar sources to look out for as well.

Coeliac Disease And Gluten Intolerance
Most people can digest gluten with no issues however, some individuals have an auto-immune condition called coeliac disease. Coeliac disease is hereditary, meaning it runs in families if you have a parent with the condition, you also have a one in ten chance of developing it.
When those with the illness eat gluten, it triggers inflammation in the small intestine and damages the small finger-like projections called villi along the gut wall. Undiagnosed, coeliac disease can damage the gut lining and lead to nutrient malabsorption, resulting in mineral and vitamin deficiencies. Symptoms include:
Around 1% of those in the U.S. are diagnosed with coeliac disease, though it is estimated that more than two million Americans are living undiagnosed with coeliac disease.
Those with a wheat allergy also have to avoid glutenous products unconditionally. People often confuse wheat allergy with coeliac disease, though the two are separate conditions for example, those with wheat allergy can experience symptoms when eating gluten-free products if they still contain parts of the wheat other than gluten.
Wheat and gluten can be present in unexpected products, including playdough, imitation crab meat, soups, marinara sauce and processed meats, among other sources. With this in mind, always check the labels carefully before buying a product, even if you wouldn’t expect it to contain wheat and gluten.
