Are You Intaking More Calories

Why You Should Cut Out Dairy For Weight Loss

If youve substituted dairy alternatives, snack foods, or even loads of rich natural ingredients for the dairy foods in your diet, its possible that youre consuming more calories. Do the math to see if you might have inadvertently increased your calorie intake. A bump up in calories without an increase in calorie burn is a quick way to start packing on pounds.

You Could Miss Out On Some Essential Nutrients

Before you swap out your 1% for almond milk, it’s important to remember that dairy products can be part of a healthy diet. After all, there’s a reason why the USDA recommends adults have three cups of dairy per day milk, cheese, and yogurt are rich sources of vitamin D, protein, and calcium, a critical nutrient for bone health. “It’s important to know how to replace them ,” Sass says.

If you’ve decided to eliminate dairy, work with a nutritionist to create a diet plan that still includes plenty of these nutrients. “It’s not to say that someone who gives up dairy can’t get enough vitamin D and calcium, but it’s not as easy,” says Gans.

Dark leafy veggies like kale and collard greens, and fatty fish like sardines and canned salmon are good non-dairy calcium sources. Certain brands of plant-based milk and orange juice are also fortified with calcium and vitamin D, Sass notes, although “they’re low in protein, so you may need to bump up your intake of foods like eggs, pulses, or salmon to maintain your total protein intake.”

If you’ve eliminated dairy and are having trouble finding calcium and vitamin D alternatives that you enjoy, meet with a nutritionist to discuss whether or not you should start taking a supplement.

Its Almost Impossible To Find Packaged Foods That Dont Have Any Added Sugar

Satisfying Eats: My Story

While on Whole30, youre not supposed to have any kind of added sugar. Its important to note that this is different from foods that have naturally occurring sugar, such as fruits or starchy vegetables. But when Pinteresting recipes for paleo shepherds pie or even buying frozen vegetables, it shocked me to know how almost everything has sugar in it. Disaccharide. Ribose. Galactose. Who knew all of these words are just different names for sugar, and that all are commonly found even in packaged foods that seem healthy.

Sugar, when consumed in large quantities, can have adverse effects on your brain, which is why Whole30 prohibits it. When you consume sugar, your tongues taste receptors are activated and it stimulates a reward sense in the brain, causing you to want more. At First It Was Fun Looking Up New Recipes For The Week

I enjoyed looking online to find recipes that would fit with my new restrictive diet. I turned to some vegan recipes, which I knew would already be dairy-free, so all I would have to look for was options without any grains.

One of my favorite new recipes is a vegan Caesar salad, which uses baked chickpeas instead of croutons, hummus instead of mayonnaise, and water from capers to give the dressing a briney taste.

But You End Up Saving A Ton Of Money

If youre anything like me, you have a budget and sticking to it can be harder than finding an affordable Uber when its snowing. But on Whole30, I found I actually had a little extra money in my bank account that I hadnt anticipated. Since I was buying foods that werent processed, I felt full for longer, and therefore, spent less money at the grocery store each week.

Of course, the fact that I couldn’t grab that drink after work , also made a huge difference. This calculator actually helped me predict how much money I spend per week, month, and year on alcohol. After realizing that I was spending over $400 per month on alcohol prior to Whole30, I was surprised by just how much I could potentially save by giving up the sauce for a month.

After completing Whole30 and reintroducing alcohol back, I decided to cut my predicted alcohol spending in half. Knowing that I have an extra $200 every month made giving up the sauce for 30 days totally worth it.

Not All Food Groups Are Created Equal

During the reintroduction process after Whole30, you incorporate each new food group that you eliminated back into your diet gradually, to see how your body reacts. During this time of Whole30, I realized that just because I felt sensitive to peanuts, which are a legume, does not mean that all legumes affect me. Reintroducing food groups takes time, care, and attention to how each food is making you feel.

For example, when I reintroduced gluten, I became incredibly bloated and uncomfortable. When I had non-gluten grains, such as rice or quinoa, I had no reaction. Its important to listen to how your body reacts to certain food groups and decide what you want to keep and eliminate in your diet. This isn’t to say that I’ll never eat bread again, but when I do, I know and am prepared for how I will feel afterwards, which makes me think twice before reaching for that bread basket.

Why Would Someone Need To Cut Out Gluten

People who have Celiac disease, a non-Celiac gluten intolerance, or a wheat and gluten allergy all cannot eat gluten for various different reasons. In the case of Celiac, it’s an autoimmune disease where the presence of gluten prompts the body to attack the small intestine, which can cause bloating, digestive distress, malabsorption, and long-term health problems like anemia and even infertility. People with a non-Celiac gluten intolerance do not have Celiac but still experience serious digestive issues when they eat gluten. And for someone with a wheat and gluten allergy, they might experience rashes, hives, sneezing, or a runny nose after eating wheat products.

There’s also research showing that gluten can cause leaky gut, says Sam Presicci, RD, CPT, and dietitian for Snap Kitchen. “When you eat gluten, it travels through your stomach and into your small intestine, where its presence initiates the release of zonulin,” she explains, a type of protein. Zonulin signals the tight junctions of intestinal wall to open. As their name implies, tight junctions are meant to stay sealed, making sure that the foods that enter your digestive tract never make their way to other parts of your body, she says.

Want to know more about gluten? Here’s an RD’s take:

Your Gut Needs A Detox

You may find that your body is sensitive to multiple food items and ingredients. If this is the case, your guy may need to be repaired. King suggests that a leaky guy could be the problem to all of your food sensitivities, and simply cleaning it up can help you eat more foods.

There are many ways you can help balance your gut. Eating probiotics could significantly help improve your gut health, as it will create good bacteria. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt, and pickles are all excellent sources of probiotics. Eating less sugar and drinking more water have also shown positive effects on the gut.

Why Would Someone Need To Try A Gluten

Basically, cutting out gluten and dairy can potentially help someone eliminate two major sources of inflammation. In those with Celiac disease, casein can cross-react with gluten, meaning the body mistakes the casein for gluten, causing inflammation and furthering issues of leaky gut, says Pressici. For those people, cutting gluten and dairy can tame inflammation all around, although it’s not necessary for everyone who has Celiac.

Those with autoimmune conditions will often greatly benefit from a gluten and dairy free diet, since this type of protocol will help with gut healing and decrease inflammation, adds Presicci. “Leaky gut has been associated with the development of autoimmune conditions, so avoiding leaky gut in the first place or healing it if it already exists is critical, she says.

Let’s be clear: This is a very restrictive way to eat, which might be difficult to maintain long-term. There’s also the chance by cutting out whole foods groups that you could miss out on key nutrients. By eliminating gluten, the average person would eliminate intake of whole grains and therefore reduce intake of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber as well as reducing protein when starches are chosen, says Kelly Jones MS, RD, CSSD, LDN. Similarly, cutting out dairy could make it harder for people to get calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients.

How To Cut Out Caffeine Dairy Gluten And Sugar

Many people with food-related allergies or food sensitivities must learn how to eliminate specific substances from their diets. Caffeine, sugar, gluten and dairy are all associated with sensitivities that may cause adverse physical reactions. In addition, holistic health practitioners advise strict dietary protocols eliminating these substances to treat a wide variety of health conditions such as arthritis, celiac disease and lupus. Some people also remove these substances from their diets temporarily in an effort to “detox” or “cleanse” their bodies. If you have a sensitivity to any of these substances, it is helpful to know how to eliminate them from your daily food selections and plan a healthy diet.

As you eliminate dairy products, eating plenty of leafy green vegetables will ensure that you have sufficient calcium.
