Testing For Hidden Gluten

1st Impression | Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Bread

I only tested products that were either labeled gluten free or do not contain gluten ingredients. Please note the results below are for entertainment purposes and they do not guarantee that the product you see on your local store shelves will get a similar result.

Also note that when the Nima Sensor detects gluten, it displays a wheat symbol and the message Gluten Found. When it doesnt detect gluten, it displays a smiley face.

Here is how some of my favorite products at Trader Joes fared when put to the Nima Sensor test:

Brownie Crisp Coffee Ice Cream Sandwiches

I had no idea these were gluten-free until I checked the ingredients since they aren’t advertised as GF. The brownie isn’t so much of a crisp, but rather a thin, chewy brownie. I love coffee ice cream and chocolate flavors, so the combination of the two is an A in my book. The small portion size is perfect for a treat without being too filling.

Storage Tips & Suggestions

My #1 tip for gluten-free bread is to soften it in the microwave for 5-10 seconds! Most breads are kept frozen anyway, but they all tend to harden over time. Do yourself a favor and pop it in the microwave for a few seconds, as it makes a big difference. Also, I usually keep gluten-free bread in the freezer or refrigerator to maintain freshness as long as possible.

Why Im Reviewing Packaged Gluten Free Bread

If youre on my email list , I asked you what your favorite brands are, and you poured your gluten-avoiding hearts out! Ive been through many loaves of bread. If it was a total dud , Im not reviewing it here.

My intention in publishing these reviews is not to stir up controversy, harm anyones business or even support anyones business to be honest. When I posted something on my Facebook page about how Udis bread is hard to separate, someone angrily accused me of endangering their business.

Clearly, that isnt my purposebut I also have no obligation to pretend that reality isnt what it is. My intention is simple. I want to help you, the consumer, spend your money wisely.

Packaged gluten free products are more expensive than conventional products, and always will be. The market for these products is smaller, and the ingredients are more expensive .

But weve come a long way since 2004 when my family first went gluten free. Back then, we ordered some bizarre gluten free packaged bread from Canada that not only couldnt be eaten untoasted but lost its toast within minutes. And the cost was insane. Well, weve come a long, long way since then.

Everyone knows that I love baking fresh homemade gluten free bread. My children adore it when they have it for their school lunches, and my husband loves it because its cheaper.

That isnt the stuff really of my dreams, but it is of theirs. But its just not realistic.

Gluten Free Dry Goods & Spices

Trader Joes offers a WIDE variety of pasta. Brown rice pasta. Quinoa pasta. Red lentil pasta. They even sell their own brand of boxed gluten free macaroni and cheese! I used their fusilli in my gluten free beef stroganoff and rather enjoyed it!

Their gluten free pancakes mix is an old standard. However, they continue to add new products like their mochi cake mix and Fudgy Chocolate Quinoa Cake mix.

At this point, I think the words Everything But The Bagel are synonymous with Trader Joes. On top of the famous seasoning blend, they how have Everything but the Bagel smoked salmon and Everything but the Bagel yogurt dip. This is not listed on the Trader Joes gluten free list, however none of their spices do either. However, I consume this, their baking powder, and cocoa all without issue.

Gluten Free Frozen Foods

This highly popular Gluten Free Cauliflower Gnocchi is not specifically listed on the Trader Joes Gluten Free Dietary List. I have purchased this many times, but you decide. I really like Iowa Girl Eats tips on cooking cauliflower gnocchi. Trader Joes also sells cauliflower and butternut squash pizza crusts, which ARE labeled gluten free.

I have not personally tried these gluten free chicken nuggets. I know my friend Amanda of Eat at Our Table loves them, as do the rest of her family.

Youll find many Trader Joes gluten free foods in the freezer section. This gluten free macaroni and cheese works great in a pinch. They also stock a gluten free cheese pizza, and a gluten free Chicken Tikka Masala. There are also many other items, again not specifically labeled gluten free, that contain no gluten ingredients.

Dont forget breakfast. These gluten free toaster waffles are a steal at only $1.99 a box. They also sell gluten free frozen pancakes. I really love their gluten free mochi ice cream treats!

Trader Joes Gluten Free French Toast Bake

This gluten free french toast bake is SO goodyou would never know its GF!

My hubby started cutting gluten out of his diet a couple of years ago. He has felt SO much better and has seen so many positive improvements to his health! While no one in our family is completely intolerant, we have really tried to incorporate more gluten free options into all of our diets. Some switches have not been that big of a deal.while other GF products weve tried have been TERRIBLE. Id rather just skip eating kind of terrible.

This Trader Joes gluten free cinnamon raisin bread has been one of the big winners! It is soft, not crumbly like some GF breads, and tastes great. Prior to cutting gluten, I used to make THIS breakfast bake all the time using croissants. I decided to try the same method using this bread we love so much and it was a winner!!

Reviews For Trader Joes Gluten

Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Whole Grain Bread one week later ~ 6/25/15
  • Rated 3 out of 5

    Stewart G. November 25, 2020

Long story short: if you need to adhere to a gluten-free diet, this is good! But if you arent strictly gluten-free, youd probably prefer a different option.

For being a gluten-free dessert, its pretty good. It has a nice pumpkin spice taste, and doesnt totally crumble apart the way many gluten-free breads and desserts do. However, the texture is still not quite up to par in terms of soft/melt-in-your-mouth style as I would expect from a typical bread loaf dessert that wasnt gluten free.

If youre not gluten-free, its totally still edible not gross or anything, just not amazing from a non-GF perspective.

Very surprisingly delicious. Gluten free for my niece, but we all shared. It was moist and lite, not too sweet and not a heavy dessert bread. it was delicious with after dinner coffee and a little cream cheese spread on top. Will have this for Christmas also, if its still on the shelf.
