Id walk around nibbling the end a baguette as I just couldnt resist. Then the diagnosis came. The bread was, of course, an absolute no-go. But that doesnt mean there arent options available! Even in the two years since my diagnosis, the bread options for us have come on in leaps and bounds. Today were going to be taking a look at whether Walmart sells gluten-free bread, and if so what gluten-free bread brands at Walmart are available.

At under $6 for a whopping 32 ounces of pancake mix, you cant really beat the value of Walmarts Great Value product. Plus, it can be used to make light and fluffy pancakes and waffles. Unlike many competing mixes that are packaged in boxes, this mix conveniently comes in a resealable bag, making it super simple to keep fresh and not worry about spillage in your pantry. Brown rice flour is the primary ingredient, and youll need to provide an egg, milk, and butter in the recipe.

Cherrybrook Kitchen Gluten Free Pancake And Waffle Mix

Cherrybrook Kitchen gluten free pancake mix is a true dark horse candidate for gluten free pancake mix of the yearif there were such a thing, of course. Color me surprised!

I have seen the Cherrybrook Kitchen brand of gluten free, allergy-friendly mixes in many grocery stores and in every natural foods store. I scoffed! Too many allergies being catered to often means taste and texture are completely sacrificed.

These pancakes are truly light and fluffy, and have a great tender mouth feel and texture. They don’t, I’m afraid, have a ton of taste on their own, but the texture is so spot-on that you can forgive them.

Keep in mind, though, that the batter was very thick. That meant that it was difficult to shape the pancakes into lovely rounds. Perhaps thinning the batter with a bit more water or milk would help, but it also might hurt the texture.

Arrowhead Mills Gluten Free Pancake & Waffle Mix

Arrowhead Mills carries some of my favorite gluten free flours and products , but this pancake mix really missed the mark. While I loved the affordability and their impressive certification list , the flavor, texture, and color just really didnt deliver.

*In reading other online reviews, several reviews found success using this mix for things other than pancakes, like scones, battering seafood/veggies for frying, muffins, etc.

OVERALL SCORE: 1/10

  • Taste: They tasted like raw flour even when given LOTS of extra time to cook. I tried adding vanilla and cinnamon to the mix, but even then, it tasted so strongly of flour and nothing else we didnt finish eating them.
  • Texture & Fluff Factor: They were pretty thick, but more spongy than fluffy
  • Color: They didnt really ever brown. I left one on twice as long as I normally would and it only JUST started to turn golden .
  • Waffle Score: Waffle directions are clearly given on the package. The waffles were moderately better than the pancakes, but the flavor was still pretty bad. They didnt brown at all either.

King Arthur Flour Gluten Free Pancake Mix

I’m leading with King Arthur Flour gluten free pancake mix because everyone in my family agreed that it was the best of the bunch. Since I’ve never liked their all purpose gluten free flour , I was really very surprised.

Typically I find that King Arthur rice flour blends are gritty and contain way too much starch. This mix doesn’t suffer from either of those limitations. Since the instructions call for having the batter sit for 10 minutes before you begin making pancakes, perhaps the rice flour softens just enough.

The pancakes weren’t super puffy like my buttermilk pancakes, but they were very light and fluffy. The taste of the pancakes alone, without any added sugar, honey or maple syrup, was really excellent. I really like this blend!

  • Ingredients: whole grain brown rice flour, potato starch, tapioca starch, rice flour, cane sugar, baking powder , natural flavors, salt, vitamin and mineral blend , reduced iron, thiamin hydrochloride , riboflavin , xanthan gum.
  • Here is the recipe that I used, based on the package label:1 1/3 cups pancake mix1 large egg3 tablespoons melted butter1 cup milkWhisk together eggs, butter or oil, and milk. Whisk in the mix. Allow the batter to sit for 10 minutes to thicken. Preheat griddle to 350°F/medium. Scoop 1/4 cup of batter onto lightly greased griddle.Cook 1-2 minutes, until bubbles form on top and bottom is golden brown. Flip and cook for 1-2 minutes more. Serve hot.

Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Pancake Mix

When you write to me and ask if you can use Bob’s Red Mill flour blends in my gluten free baking recipes, I’m always so sorry to say that I don’t recommend you do it.

Typically, Bob’s Red Mill products use a gritty rice flour and are of very inconsistent quality. Since Bob’s Red Mill products are very well-priced, reliably gluten free and are available nearly everywhere, I so wish they would improve their rice flour.

I decided to give the Bob’s Red Mill gluten free pancake mix a try anyway. The blend doesn’t have white rice flour in it . Since pancake batter can sit before being cooked, I was hopeful that there wouldn’t be any grittiness.

I’m happy to report that I did not detect any grittiness. The pancakes had great flavor and taste. Unfortunately, they really could use some more leavening, as even with 2 eggs for 1 1/2 cups of the mix, they just were rather flat.

To keep this product review fair and true, I never tinker with the mixes. I may provide notes about how much liquid I think should be added, though, but that’s it.

I really did have to restrain myself from adding some more baking powder to see if these pancakes were thicker as a result, though. Cutting back on the liquid might help, too, but I didn’t see any feathered edges like I normally would when pancakes have too much moisture. It might even be that they need a touch more xanthan gum. I’m just not sure.

Bisquick Gluten Free Pancake Mix

Bisquick is known for being quick, easy, and inexpensive, but Id never tried their gluten free mixes. On the plus side, Bisquick is fairly easy to find and its budget friendly. As for taste and texture, we found the flavor to be pretty bland, and the mixture produced VERY thick pancakes and dense waffles. I thinned out the mix a bit with more milk to get thinner pancakes, and while they cooked better, they still tasted bland. If you go with this mix, I suggest adding some vanilla or cinnamon and maybe an add-in like blueberries, chocolate chips, diced bananas, etc.

OVERALL SCORE: 4/10

  • Taste: Pretty bland. Could be improved with vanilla, cinnamon, or mix-ins
  • Texture & Fluff Factor: VERY thick pancakes that were fairly dense. I thinned out the mix a bit with more milk which helped, but I still didnt feel like they nailed the texture.
  • Color: The waffles didnt brown at all, even after several rounds in the waffle iron. The pancakes fared better, but with the thick ones , the outsides often browned well before the centers were done, even with reduced heat.
  • Waffle Notes: It can be made into waffles. The directions and ingredient amounts needed are clearly listed. We found the waffles pretty bland, and fairly dense.
  • Certifications: Gluten free. Note: this mix is partially produced with genetic engineering.

Homemade Gluten Free Flour Blend

Using a homemade mix of gluten free flours made the very best, soft, fluffy pancakes.

I think this is because I was able to adjust the amount of gum needed and I used the bare minimum per recipe as any more than that tends to make them sticky, this is a problem with most ready made blends that have gum added which is often too much in my opinion.

I tested and retested this recipe with various gluten free flour combinations and the best results I got were using a combination of white rice flour, brown rice flour, and potato starch. If you can find those specific flours I recommend using them in the quantities listed in the recipe below. You could substitute one or more of the flours but the result will probably be different.

Pamela’s Gluten Free + Whole Grain Baking & Pancake Mix

Over the years that I’ve been publishing recipes both here on the blog and in cookbooks, I’ve been asked many times whether Pamela’s pancake & baking mix can be used in place of all purpose gluten free flour in my recipes. Some readers have even reported having some success doing just that.

My response is always the same: Pamela’s baking mix is a pancake mix. It contains a blend of flours, and it contains chemical leaveners. Because of that fact, it is not an all purpose flour blend. I haven’t tried Pamela’s all purpose gluten free flour blend, though. I really should!

Composed primarily of rice, corn, and soy flours, this blend churns out super fluffy, easy-to-prepare pancakes every time. Each 16-ounce container is around $12 and will yield about three batches, and youll need to provide milk, butter, and an egg.

Freezing Gluten Free Pancakes For Hassle Free Mornings

If you have leftover pancakes, or you just want to make a big batch ahead of time, this recipe is perfect! Just let the pancakes cool completely, and wrap them in stacks of 2 or 3.

If you use a freezer-safe wrap or container, and wrap them tightly or squeeze all the air out of the container, you can freeze them for at least 3 months. Defrost them at room temperature, overnight in the refrigerator, or in the microwave for about 20 seconds.

Then, separate the pancakes in the stack, and place them in your toaster. Toast them on low until theyre warm and ready for your syrup!

Bobs Red Mill Gluten Free Pancake Mix

Bobs Red Mill is one of my favorite gluten free brands. Theyve dedicated themselves to building quality and trust over the years that really shows in their transparency and products.

While I love them forever for their fantastic GF flours, oats, cornmeal, and other baking products, their pancake mix didnt quite win me over. While their mix won points for affordability and availability, overall, the flavor was lacking and they just didnt brown.

OVERALL SCORE: 4/10

Cup4Cup has pretty impressive credentials. The mixes are developed by Chef Thomas Keller and come with a lot of great reviews. The blend is fairly starchy, which keeps these light and fluffy, but doesnt deliver much on the fiber/protein front. We especially enjoyed them as waffles!

  • Taste: These were great as waffles, where I expect some egg-iness, but I found the egg taste a *little* bit forward in the waffles . That said, the package also had suggestions for add-ins that could really kick these up!
  • Texture & Fluff Factor: They were definitely light and fluffy. I LOVED that the waffles had crisp exteriors and that light stretchy interior I look for in a waffle. The pancakes were on the fluffy side, and were also light.
  • Color: The waffles especially, took on a nice golden hue on the exterior while staying light on the inside. The pancakes browned a little less, but still got a bit golden.
  • Waffle Score: These work even better as waffles, in my opinion. No changes to the preparation are necessary for waffles and instructions are clearly given.
