Does It Need To Be Refrigerated

Yes, Better Than Bouillon should be refrigerated after opening. For any jar of Better Than Bouillon that is older than the Best By date printed on top of the lid and/or was not put in the refrigerator after opening, we cannot guarantee the quality or performance, and we advise that it should be discarded.

It Is Darker/lighter Than Normal

Better Than Bouillon does get darker when it’s stored. The change in coloration is due to every jar of Better Than Bouillon starting with real meat, seafood or vegetables, resulting in color changes that are natural and will happen over time. This is perfectly normal and is safe to consume as long as the product is used before the Best By date.

A couple of days ago, a member informed me that one of the Better Than Bouillon jars she recently purchased was not gluten free, per its ingredient label. I contacted Better Than Bouillon yesterday. One Two of the varieties of their 33 Better Than Bouillon bases contains gluten. Learn which one contains gluten, about their production facility, and whether they test for gluten.

I just checked the three that I have in my pantry from Costco and theyre all gluten free.

UPDATE January 29, 2018: thanks to a reader, she pointed out that Vitacost.com, which is usually very accurate, shows the ingredients in the vegetarian low sodium base to contain gluten. This in addition to their non-organic beef base.

UPDATE June 15, 2016: A Better Than Bouillon representative just informed me that the organic beef base does NOT contain gluten, just the non-organic.

Better than Bouillon has released a statement saying, âWe do not make the gluten-free claims upon any of our Better Than Bouillon Food Bases.â

With that said, even if they don’t use gluten containing ingredients they are most likely processing the bouillon in the same space as other gluten containing products. Please be aware and always check labels.

This easy gluten-free gravy recipe is smooth and savory and a huge hit in my house of picky eaters – so I had to share it with you.

I don’t normally whip up a pot of gluten-free gravy in the summer but this recipe is simple enough that I’ll make it any time of year when we want mashed potatoes and gravy.

And my oldest daughter and I love gravy so much, that we make it anytime my husband makes gluten free mashed potatoes.

It’s not overpowering, and it adds just enough extra texture and flavor, that it works well on Red Roasted Potatoes and meats as well.

Is Knorr Bouillon Gluten Free

Knorr is one of the most popular companies producing both Knorr chicken bouillon and Knorr beef bouillon and even other flavors such as shrimp.

While their ingredient lists do not show gluten-containing ingredients, it is difficult to know if their products could have gluten cross-contact.

According to Unilever customer services, they have not validated that their suppliers can guarantee the elimination of any potential cross-contamination risks from other materials within their production facility which may contain gluten or from shared equipment.

With other gluten-free options available, I would stay away from Knorr until they definitely make a gluten-free claim.

Tips For Making Gluten

There are a couple of quick tips that YOU MUST READ. They will really help you make the perfect fail-proof gravy.

Start with cold ingredients.

Put all the ingredients in the pot THEN heat. If you don’t your flour will clump. No body likes clumpy gravy.

You can use regular butter, or dairy-free butter.

All broth options work .

If you use turkey drippings, let it come to room temperature first. Also, test to see how strong the flavor is, you might want to add water.

If you don’t have broth or turkey drippings, you can use bullion cubes to make broth.

Again, follow these simple tips and you will have the perfect easy gluten-free gravy.

Bou Bouillon Is Gluten

Bou Bouillon does make a claim that all of its bouillon cubes and world flavor cubes are gluten-free. Additionally, many of their vegetable bases are vegan and Bou is MSG free.

Bou comes in beef, chicken, and vegetable flavors.

Can I Use A Flour Blend That Contains Xanthan Gum In Gluten

Yes. While I don’t usually create recipes that need xanthan gum I’ve used Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 gluten-free flour in this recipe and it has xanthan gum.

The trick with it having the xanthan gum is that you have to add it to cold ingredients, or it will clump up in the gravy – the same with starches.

Make sure to add your flours or starches to cold liquid. They should rise in temperature together while you are whisking it over the stove.

Old school manufacturing of broths regularly used barley malt as an additive. Today, most broths and soup seasonings do not have this gluten adverse ingredient of Barley Malt Extract. Working much like mono sodium glutamate, barley malt hits the umami level on our tongues. The two flavors of the reduced sodium category by Better than Bouillon, Roasted Beef and Seasoned Vegetable both have the addition of Barley Malt Extract in them. In order to reduce the sodium, which is still substantial the barley malt extract is added for missing flavor. This sneaky gluten rich addition is unneeded in the other 18 flavors of bouillon because they have more salt content.

Better than Bouillon used to be the go-to stock starter for celiacs but no longer.

I was conducting a Gluten-Free Store tour at Planet Organic here in Victoria, BC when I made my usual stop in front of the Better Than Bouillon shelf. I recommend their concentrated stocks as a premium base because they contain no fat, and because they are gluten free or used to be! Over the past year, the gluten-free label no longer appeared on their labels but were reassured about BTBs gluten-free status on their website. We understood that only the low-sodium flavour contained gluten. However, yesterday, we noticed that at least two of their other flavours now list malt barley on their labels.

Another reminder to Celiacs, check labels, every time.

How To Make Gluten

  • Add your cold butter to the pan.
  • Add the broth, gluten-free flour , and salt and pepper to the pan.
  • Whisk constantly.
  • When your gravy starts to boil, whisk until all the ingredients are combined and your gravy is smooth.
  • Remove from the heat and cool to desired temperature before serving.
  • Serve over mashed potatoes or whatever else your taste buds desire.
  • I usually make gravy with the leftover broth from cooking poultry and when I developed this recipe we didn’t have any so I had to compromise. Broth it was!

    Easy right? You can add extra spices if you like. But really, it’s perfect as is.

    Simply place the ingredients in the pan cold or at room temperature, whisk, and serve!
