Spice Maker Mccormick Unveils 11 New Gluten
US spice maker McCormick has unveiled 11 new products that it hopes will tap into growing demand for gluten-free items as well as on-trend flavors. McCormick said the products will simplify fall recipes. This latest batch of products are made up of slow cooker sauces, gluten-free seasonings and spice mixes. New products include: smoky bourbon BBQ pork gluten-free meat loaf seasoning gluten-free fajita seasoning gluten-free thick & zesty spaghetti sauce gluten-free beef stew seasoning. The company is launching two Kitchen Basics stock cubes roasted vegetable & herb and roasted garlic & chicken that are gluten-free and with no MSG. Other additions include Pure Pumpkin Pie liquid spice extract and Thai Kitchen coconut cream.

People with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities cannot eat gluten. In many cases, even a crumb of gluten makes these individuals extremely sick.
This has lead many people in the gluten-free community to wonder if their seemingly innocent-looking jars of spices contain only the spice in question or also crumbs of gluten as well.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed the gluten-free communitys worst fears when it put spices to the gluten test in 2010.
The agency tested 268 ground single ingredient spices and found that 63 samples contained detectable levels of gluten ranging from 5 ppm to 20,000 ppm.
Mind you, however, the agency goes on to say that 62 of the samples contained a level of gluten that would not pose a risk to a sensitive individual.
Regardless, this study is a cautionary tale that even innocent, single-ingredient spices may contain detectable levels of gluten, levels which may be set off an inflammatory cascade in someone with celiac disease, or fuel the inflammatory fire in someone with gluten sensitivity.

Are Spice Hunter Spices Gluten Free

How Do I Make Sure My Homemade Taco Seasoning Is Gluten Free
The only way to really make sure that every ingredient that goes into your homemade gluten free taco seasoning is 100% safe is to use a gluten sensor. Thats such a personal decision, and it goes way beyond the scope of this gluten free baking blog.
If it helps you feel more comfortable, Nima sensor has a great list of spices theyve tested and found completely safe. I tend to use McCormicks brand spices, but also use Trader Joes brand spices, and Whole Pantry brand, from Whole Foods.
Are Spicely Organics Spices Gluten Free
Spicely says all of its spices are produced in a dedicated, gluten-free facility and are certified gluten-free by the Gluten Intolerance Group.
Spicely spices do not contain gluten, nor come in contact with any ingredients that do.

Getting Spicy With The Nima Sensor

One thing Im asked about often is whether or not spices are gluten-free.
When you read the label of a spice jar, it almost always says just the spices name. For example, a bottle of dried oregano says on its ingredient label, Oregano.
Unfortunately, very few spice companies make certified gluten-free spices. While Im not certain why this is, I suspect that most spices come from a handful of manufacturing facilities where gluten may be present in the facility.
Manufacturing equipment may or may not be shared in the manufacturing of different spices however, when a facility also manufacturers products containing gluten, even if its on different equipment in a different room, a manufacturer may be hesitant to label its spices gluten-free. While the spice doesnt contain any gluten ingredients, these manufacturers fear the risk of air-borne cross contamination.
In other words, these spices are often gluten-free, but they are not labeled as such, and this leads to much confusion over whether or not packaged spices are safe for people with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities.
So, whats a person who eats gluten-free to do? We like spices just like the rest of the world! Are they safe or not?
While I cant tell you exactly what you should do, I can tell what I consider best practices in decoding a spices ingredient label.

Are Badia Spices Gluten Free
Badia spices are labeled gluten free and are a bargain! This whole container of chili powder cost less than $7 at Safeway.
Be sure to shop for Badia spices in the Hispanic food aisle, not the spice/baking aisle.
I tested Badias chili powder for hidden gluten with my Nima Sensor and it came back a-okay.
Verdict: Yes, Badia spices are gluten free.
Are Simply Organic Spices Gluten Free
Simply Organic spices are manufactured by Frontier Co-Op, and some not all of the spices are certified gluten free by the GFCO.

I inquired about Durkee spices to B& G Foods, Inc., its parent company . B& G said:
We do not maintain a list of gluten-free spices nor are we currently testing for gluten. However, single ingredient spices are inherently gluten free.
We have a strong allergen clean out policy that has been validated to ensure that there is no allergen cross contamination at the plant. Since ingredients and facilities may change from time to time, always check the label on a specific product for current ingredient and allergen information.

Why Isnt All Taco Seasoning Naturally Gluten Free
Since taco seasoning is simply a blend of dried spices, you might assume that all taco seasoning is naturally gluten free. But like most anything else packaged, there is always the possibility that theres a gluten-containing ingredient added.
Some spice mixes have added gluten in the form of malt for flavoring, or even wheat flour as a binder or thickener. The same goes for packaged sauces.
I assume these brands began adding these flavoring or fillers long before there was any sensitivity to something gluten-containing. Back in the early 2000s, I barely even knew what gluten was, much less how to avoid it!
Now their taco seasoning blend is what it is, and its not worth reformulating. Think about Rice Krispies and their added malt syrup.
Its easy to check the label of spice blends to see if they contain any suspicious ingredients. If youre unsure, dont use the blend.
Youre unlikely to get even trace amounts of gluten from a single ingredient spice, like those you use to create this homemade gluten free taco seasoning. But of course its possible.
When Is A Spice Brand Considered Gluten Free
For a manufacturer to label a store-bought spice as gluten free, it cannot contain any gluten-containing ingredients, and it must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten per the FDAs gluten-free labeling guidelines.
For a store-bought spice to be labeled certified gluten-free, it must be third-party verified to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten, and some certifying agencies even require stricter protocols, calling for a product to contain less than 10 ppm.
When you look at a spice jar and see only a single ingredient , but dont see a gluten-free disclosure, you may wonder if the spice is safe to consume.
This is where things get tricky as gluten is known to not only lurk in surprise places, but also spices are notoriously coming in cross contact with gluten during the manufacturing process.

How I Use Gluten Free Taco Seasoning
I use it in place of the spices in our recipe for chicken Parm meatballs to transform them into Mexican-style meatballs. I use it on sauteed vegetables to make fajitas.
I even use this spice blend in place of the individual spices in our recipe for red enchilada sauce. Thats the sauce you see drizzled on the chicken tacos in the photos.
The chicken in the tacos pictured below is made by slicing skinless boneless chicken breast into thin slices. Then, I toss them with cornstarch and our homemade gluten free taco seasoning and allow them to sit for at least 30 minutes and up to a day in the refrigerator.
To cook the chicken, I simply saute it in a neutral oil with a relatively high smoke point. Peanut oil and grapeseed oil work great, but so does canola oil .
Are Trader Joes Spices Gluten Free
Trader Joes says if any of its products claim to be gluten free, that the product has been validated to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten.
The grocery chain also provides a comprehensive list of gluten-free products on its website, and no spice is included on that list.
When I inspected the spice labels at Trader Joes, I did not see any gluten listed. As a result, I decided to test four random spices with my Nima Sensor for hidden gluten. A Nima Sensor is a portable gluten detecting device that enables you to test a small portion of your food for hidden gluten.

To accurately test each spice, I added a few drops of water to the test capsule to dilute the spices as instructed by the Nima Sensor user manual. Here is what I found:
Please note I tested the cumin twice, just to make sure it indeed contained gluten, which it does based on both tests.
Verdict: No
