Gluten Free Diet Benefits

Complete Gluten free diet plan for beginners – With Sample Gluten Free Meal Plan

Embarking on a gluten-free diet has its own risks and benefits. We will be surveying gluten-free diet benefits in this section. Besides the fact that consuming gluten is harmful to people with gluten sensitivity and other health conditions, studies confirm that a gluten-free diet benefits people with irritable bowel syndrome as well. However, one doesnt need to suffer from any of these health issues to benefit from a gluten-free diet.

A gluten-free diet benefits all. How? Here are a couple of ways in which a gluten-free diet benefits people without gluten intolerance

  • It encourages people on a diet, to increase their intake of fruits and vegetables, as all fruits and vegetables are gluten-free.
  • It eliminates processed unhealthy food products from your diet. You eat less junk food on this diet.
  • You are also less prone to germ and viral diseases as you consume more minerals, vitamins and antioxidants on this diet.
  • According to the Gluten Intolerance Group, a gluten-free diet also reduces the chances of heart diseases, cancer and diabetes

Consider Supplementation To Support Digestion Post Cross Contamination

Sadly, it is almost impossible to be 100% gluten free at all times.

Ok sure, if you live on your own farm and grow your own food and never visit the grocery store or dine at a restaurant, this would be possible. But, this is not the situation for most of us and as a result, I would suggest always keeping some form of supplementation on hand in case you encounter gluten when you least expect it.

For my clients with severe reactions, I suggest bringing supplementation support every time they dine out, unless they know the restaurant well and can ensure zero cross contamination.

While there are a handful of great products on the market, my three favorite products to support accidental gluten exposure are:

If youd like to give any of these supplements a try for the most reasonable price you will find anywhere, try shopping where we buy all our supplements you would like to try. The discount and free shipping will automatically be applied at checkout. Weve been using Wellevate for forever because they do testing to assure quality and purity for the brands they carry and their prices simply cannot be beat. With so many supplement brands out there, we appreciate having a company like Wellevate that only stocks the ones that are high-quality.

One last thing to note, these supplements are NOT a crutch or an excuse to have the ability to eat gluten-rich meals. Please do not think of this as a safety net in order for you to house a large pizza.

Be Aware Of Cross Contamination

Even a tiny bit of gluten can be enough to cause symptoms for someone with coeliac disease, so make sure you minimise the risk of cross contamination with gluten-containing foods. Do this by washing down kitchen surfaces before use, using separate butters, spreads and jams to minimise the spread of crumbs and invest in some toaster bags to keep your gluten-free bread separate.

Here is my quick and dirty 5 step process on how to go gluten free:

What Is The Best Gluten

A gluten-free diet can help you drop a size, but it is simply not enough for more significant weight loss.

The main reason for this is that substitutes for gluten-containing foods are everywhere. Plus, they can be even more caloric and sugar-stuffed.

But the good news is, nothing is stopping you from starting a weight-loss diet and a gluten-free one at the same time. To be able to lose more weight, basically, the same rules apply as with any other weight-loss diet.

Develop A Core Grocery List

I would strongly recommend creating a core gluten free grocery list for yourself that you have stocked and on hand at all times. Try to have 2-3 of your favorite proteins, 2-3 vegetables, 2-3 fruits, a nut or seed, and a nut or seed butter, a healthy fat or two for cooking, and a gluten free grain.

Here is an example of a basic gluten free grocery list:

  • Pasture-raised eggs, grass-fed beef, wild-caught salmon
  • Broccoli, spinach, carrots
  • Avocado oil and grass-fed butter
  • Organic brown rice

Are Gluten Allergies Real

Getting Started on a Gluten-free Diet

Yes! Well, sort of. A gluten allergy should actually be referred to as a gluten sensitivity. There is no such thing as a gluten allergy. However, a gluten sensitivity can be severe in nature.

A wheat allergy on the other hand is very real.

A wheat allergy is not the same as a gluten sensitivity as they involve two different immune mechanisms. A wheat allergy is an IgE-mediated response with immediate and usually moderate to severe presentation. Symptoms may include rash, hives, anaphylaxis, stuffy nose, or watery eyes. It is possible in some cases that an individual who is highly allergic to wheat could die upon exposure.

Exercise During Gluten Free Diet

What about the exercises? This is a stable point when switching to a new diet plan. When you restrict yourself from eating regular food, you cant feel the endorphins from the food you like. And sport is one of the you can no longer take from food high in gluten. Simple exercises will make your new meal plan less challenging. Moreover, when trying a gluten-free diet, there are risks to gain more weight, which can be easily lost with a more intensive exercising plan.

Avoid Sauces Containing Gluten

Lots of pasta sauces, gravies, stocks and condiments contain wheat flour, and therefore gluten, so ensure you read the label and exclude anything that isnt suitable. Instead, try making your own pasta sauces and gravies using cornflour, arrowroot or potato starch to thicken them for a gluten-free option.

Nutritional Imbalance And Deficiencies

As with any other diet, if not done properly, a gluten-free diet can cause a lack of essential nutrients and vitamins. To prevent this, an adequate substitution is required namely, supplements.

Vitamins and Minerals

When gluten-free, youll need to increase your intake of:

Dietary Fiber

Even the best gluten-free diet plan can lack fibers essential helpers of digestion. Luckily you can always supplement these. High-fiber foods are perfect for this and they include fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, chia seeds, or flaxseed.

Planning, preparing, and cooking fresh ingredients can be burdensome. Luckily, modern food delivery services like Home Chef can make your dieting considerably easier .

Sugars

If theres one thing thatstudies agree upon is that people tend to eat more sugars when they get gluten out of their diets.

Consequently, people start eating gluten-free snacks, which often contain more sugar than regular treats. Thus, if you want to stay healthy and lose a few pounds in the process, following a gluten andsugar-free diet is the way to go.

Fats

Theres no definitive answer on whether or not a gluten-free diet can lead to a higher fat intake. Some studies have confirmed it, but not conclusively. Whatever the case, you need to be careful not to replace pastries and cakes with equally bad fatty foods.

Proteins

In that case, youll have to compensate with protein-rich, plant-derived foods . Fortunately, this is something you can find in almost every supermarket.

Dairy And Gluten Gone Bad

If I told my grandma 25 years ago: Grandma you need to do something about that arthritis and cut out dairy and gluten asap. Shed look at me as if Im crazy and then probably beat me with a stick forcing me to get out of her house. And shed be right.

Every day she had bread and cheese, then something we called porridge which was made out of milk, bread, sugar and butter. And then wed also have our traditional salad which was made out of cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, peppers and something similar to feta cheese that my grandma all grew and made herself. With a whole lot of bread that was fresh from the bakery.

My grandmas cheese was made out of goat milk that my mom HATED with a ton of passion. The milk, the yogurt, the cheese tasted nothing like the products you can find today. They werent creamy and too pleasant. I remember the yogurt was super sour and had a very distinct smell thats not for everyone.

Is Celiac Disease And Gluten Intolerance The Same Thing

Gluten Free Vegetarian Recipes Meal Plan for Beginners

Celiac Disease is an extreme sensitivity to gluten. While long-term complications after repeat exposure can be quite serious, someone with Celiac Disease will not die after being exposed to gluten, even in large amounts. On the other hand gluten intolerance is essentially a less severe sensitivity to gluten. However, a less severe sensitivity can still wreak havoc on the body.

There are essentially four major categories of gluten sensitivity:

  • Non-Celiac gluten sensitivity ,
  • Dermatitis, herpetiformis and
  • Gluten ataxia which is a disorder related to the brain and nervous system.
  • Now, we certainly do not need to dive 7 paragraphs deep into the logistics of gluten in present-day America. However, it is critical to understand that the farming and manufacturing practices of wheat today is vastly different than it was when our grandparents were children.

This, in combination with stress, genetics, and an overabundance of processed foods, has led the human immune system to react very negatively to gluten.

And, those of us with the genes for Celiac Disease are seeing it manifest itself in our 30s, 40s, and 50s when decades ago, the gene would have been more likely to remain dormant. Some experts believe this may be why we once thought Celiac Disease was strictly a childhood condition.

How Do I Know If My Symptoms Are Related To Gluten

If you are having symptoms that you think may be triggered by gluten, or if you have a close relative with celiac disease or you yourself have another autoimmune disease, your doctor can perform a blood test, biopsy, or other type of test to screen for celiac disease.

If you dont have celiac disease but still have symptoms you feel are triggered by gluten, unfortunately there isnt one test that can tell you with 100 percent certainty whether gluten is causing your health issues or not but there are some steps you can take to determine whether being on a gluten-free diet would be beneficial to you. Your doctor or a registered dietitian will guide you through the process.

First of all, you will eliminate all foods containing gluten from your home. This includes everything from cereal to candy bars if it contains wheat, rye or barley, put it in your trash. Many store-bought products will contain these grains even when not listed in the ingredients, so youll need to read labels carefully.

Once your home is gluten-free and your symptoms have gone away after a time on a gluten-free diet, your next step is to try reintroducing gluten into your diet. This can be difficult most people feel terrible the first few times they eat something containing gluten again! If you feel angry, bloated or tired after eating bread or pasta, chances are good that youve found the source of some of your symptoms!

How To Begin Your Gluten Free Diet Plan

Unexplained fatigue, bloating and diarrhea or constipation, skin problems, headaches and joint and muscle pain are just a few of the symptoms of possible gluten intolerance. If you suspect you may have a gluten sensitivity, you may want to try a gluten free diet for a few weeks to see if your symptoms improve.
