Gluten Free SOFT FLOUR TORTILLAS | How To Make Gluten Free Soft Tortillas

You can double the recipe and make a bunch of gluten free tortillas for meal prep. They are also perfect to take to school, university, or work. Furthermore, these gluten-free wraps are a great side dish for hearty Indian dishes such as Red Lentil Dahl or Chickpea Curry.

You can also make them very thin so that they turn out like crepes. If you leave out the salt, you can also enjoy them with a sweet filling .

Storage: Let the tortillas cool completely. I recommend stacking them on a plate and putting some wax paper between the individual wraps so that they dont stick together. You can store them in the fridge for up to 3 days, ideally, wrap the plate in plastic wrap.

They dry out a bit in the refrigerator, but you can easily reheat them individually in a pan . They will become soft and elastic/pliable again.

You can also freeze them in freezer bags for up to 3 months!

Cook The Potato Tortillas:

  • Pre-heat your skillet on medium heat for 5-10 minutes.
  • Remove the top layer of paper and flip the tortilla gently over directly in the skillet. Then slowly remove the other paper . Use a bit of oil if it sticks.
  • Cook the tortilla approximately 30-45 seconds on each side.
  • Once cooked keep the tortillas moist & warm .

Use them as a flatbread and add on any toppings youd like!

Whisk And Add Liquid At Room Temperature

The batter is very easy to prepare and it will resemble pancake batter, slightly more liquid.

In fact, these paleo tortillas are not made from a roll-able dough like wheat tortillas.

These paleo tortillas are cooked like pancakes on a non-stick pan.

To make the batter, add all the dry ingredients into a medium-size mixing bowl, and whisk to evenly distribute the flours.

Then, add the liquid at room temperature, not cold or the arrowroot flour will form lumps.

Finally, whisk until smooth and look like crepe batter in texture.

Line Your Tortilla Press With A Deconstructed Plastic Zip

Theres really only one way to shape these tortillas into rounds without lining your tortilla press with something. If you take a zip-top plastic bag, slice it open on both sides, you have a thick piece of plastic without a seam. Pressing your tortilla dough in that plastic allow you to make clean rounds without the creases that are unavoidable if you roll between parchment paper or plastic wrap. It also makes cleanup much easier!

Can I Use Another Type Of Flour To Make These Tortillas

I have tried with multiple other types of flour, including coconut flour and almond flour, and had zero luck using them. The only types of flour I can recommend are tapioca flour, tapioca starch and cassava flour.

Form The Gluten Free Potato Tortilla Dough:

  • In a bowl take the sourdough starter from the fridge, measure 3/4 cup and put the rest back. If yours is on the thinner side add a bit of more flour to it, to thicken up a bit. To that, add psyllium husk and the potato mixture, mix well and let it rest covered for 10 minutes, to absorb the moisture.
  • I you dont have a gluten free sourdough starter, you can either make one or the second best options is mixing brown rice flour with warm water or plant based milk . The consistency will be similar to the starter.
  • When ready to cook the gluten free tortillas, add the arrowroot starch , and baking powder and form a dough. It should look like a cookie dough. See video recipe.

How To Make Cauliflower Tortillas

Start by preheating the oven to 400 degrees and lining a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Next rice the cauliflower in a food processor or you can use a box grater.

You’ll want to then either steam the cauliflower rice or cook it on the stove top for 3-4 minutes in a non-stick pan.

Allow it to cool to touch and squeeze out as much water as you can with a clean kitchen towel.

Add riced cauliflower to a mixing bowl with the remaining ingredients and combine.

Form into equal sized tortillas using an ice cream scoop and spread out evenly.

Bake in preheated oven until golden brown on both sides.

Cooking The Gluten Free Tortillas

I recommend cooking the gluten free tortillas in a large non-stick frying pan. I dont recommend using a cast iron skillet but more on that below.

Its best to cook the tortillas on medium to medium-high heat and pre-heat your pan a few minutes before you start cooking them. The pan is ready when a drop of water sizzles on its surface.

To cook the tortillas:

  • Place a tortilla into the hot non-stick frying pan and cook it for about 45 seconds. You need to flip it once you see bubbles appearing on the surface and its underside is dry with occasional light brown spots.
  • Once you flip it, it should puff up in places with bubbles appearing. Cook it on the other side for about 45 seconds to 1 minute.
  • The tortilla is done when you see large dark brown spots on its underside.
  • Transfer it to a dish towel and cover it well this will trap the steam and ensure that it stays nicely soft and flexible. Continue cooking the other tortillas.
  • This Is Whats Important

    Tortillas can be made dairy free by using a variety of different substitutes. Some popular substitutes include flaxseed, chia seeds, and hemp seeds. These seeds can be mixed with water to form a dough, then rolled into tortillas. Other options include using a tortilla press, which makes tortillas quickly and easily.

    Trader Joes Brown Rice Gluten Free Tortillas

    These brown rice tortillas are not great, but theyre still worth a spot on the list. Theyre relatively thick and dont roll without splitting at all. They sort of taste like health food, but they still have a good, hearty chew and flavor.

    My children dont love these tortillas, but its good to know that you can grab a package at Trader Joes in a pinch. If I melted a bunch of cheese inside, theyd eat them. Theyre also less expensive than and very similar to the Food For Life brown rice tortillas, which are frozen and more costly.

    Tips For Making Gluten

    • Make sure to spoon the flour into the measuring cup then level, otherwise youâll end up with a dry dough.
    • Donât overmix the gluten-free flour tortilla dough.
    • Use room temperature water or warm water for this recipe.
    • Itâs best to use a wooden spoon when stirring in the water.
    • Cast iron skillets work best when making tortillas. I donât recommend non-stick pans.

    Can I Make This Recipe Gluten

    It is gluten-free, though nobody would know just by tasting it trust me!

    Bear in mind that minimising cross-contamination is hugely important if youre Coeliac or making this for someone who is. Heres some tips from Coeliac UK on minimising the risk of cross contamination.

    Also, make sure that all ingredients used dont have any gluten-containing ingredients. Then make sure that they also dont have a may contain warning for gluten, wheat, rye, barley, oats , spelt and khorasan wheat .

    A Gluten Free Tortilla Challenge

    Over a decade ago during my new gluten sensitivity diagnosis, I tried my hand at some homemade gluten free tortillas, but honestly the abundance of store bought gluten free tortillas has sky rocketed as gluten free has become more popular, so I chalked up tortillas as one of those store bought conveniences that I would take advantage of. There is a variety of gluten free tortillas out there, but as I shopped with my friend, we found that there were NONE with healthy ingredients that were made in dedicated gluten free facilities. NOT ONE! This really frustrated me! Itd been a long while since I tried my hand at homemade tortillas, but I really wanted to create something that my friend could safely use for her girls. Gluten free flour blends have REALLY improved in the last 15 years, and I had a feeling Namaste would be a really good candidate to trial with tortilla making.

    Dont Spread The Batter

    If it is the first time that you cook arrowroot flour tortillas, there are a few things to note.

    First, use a non-stick pan or pancake griddle under medium-high heat and grease the pan with at least 1 teaspoon of coconut oil or oil spray.

    Then, keep in mind that you are working with high-starch flour which makes the dough very elastic when it comes in contact with heat.

    It means that you must scoop the 1/3 cup of batter in the center of the pan and then slightly tilt the pan but not too fast, the batter will spread/fall apart.

    If you want to spread easily, dont tilt the pan, place the batter in the center of the pan and use the back of a tablespoon to spread the batter by circular motion.

    That is the easiest way to learn how to spread paleo tortilla batter without breaking it.

    Flatout Flatbread Gluten Free Wraps

    The Flatout people are kind of famous for their low-calorie wraps. According to their website, their gluten free wraps are valued at 4 Weight Watchers SmartPoints each. I think thats higher than the regular wraps. Of course!

    I had been on the hunt for these babies the moment I saw a few gluten free bloggers starting to review them online, without any luck. You couldnt even seem to purchase them online, even from the manufacturer. Why would you have a marketing campaign if your product isnt readily available to consumers?

    When I finally found these wraps, anticipation was high. They really didnt disappoint. They have a great flavor thats mostly neutral but not invisible, arent too chewy and taste completely normal. My oldest selected them as her favorite, and she eats the most gluten-containing food outside the house so shes a good judge.

    The package insists that you heat them before rolling, but even if you defrost them and dont heat them first, they do still roll. One side of the wrap will flake a bit, but thats an Achilles heel of store-bought tortillas in general.
