What I dont like about this app is that a few reviewers leave bad reviews for restaurants for things like they didnt like the meal or menu choices when it is kind of not relevant to the the gluten free questionsso know that before you use the app.

So Sushi Los Angeles never fails to impress

I made a guide for Albuquerque, so I decided it was only fair I create one for Los Angeles given I lived there for 11 years. This is based off my own experience but errors happen when working with humans and menus change so ask your own questions when visiting any of these establishments. Most of these places arent strictly gluten free kitchens so there usually is a risk for cross contamination. I chose to be ok with this given precautions are taken. You may choose not to. I have either personally been to these places or personally spoken to the restaurant about gluten free options.

Everything is listed in alphabetical order.

For pictures of food, most of these can be found on my SoCal story highlights!

LA Travel Guide: Gluten Free Vegan Food and Top Attractions

Gluten Free Avengers top Gluten Free Los Angeles restaurant picks. Food allergies are never easy. This is even more so when you want to go out with friends and need to find a place that your friends will love and that will serve you something more substantial than a simple dinner salad. I learned that I had gluten intolerance and a wheat allergy in 2007, well before gluten free was so common. It used to be such an ordeal to go out to eat that sometimes I would just meet friends after dinner so I wouldnt have to deal with it. Too many times my friends didnt know how to find a place that would accommodate my allergies, which made for a few awkward moments. Like the time a good friend of mine took me to a famous family style Italian restaurant in New York City and there was literally nothing I could eat, even the salad dressing had wheat in it. I was so hungry and frustrated I almost cried.

Luckily, things have changed in a big way, especially in these friendly gluten free Los Angeles restaurants! More and more restaurants will adjust their menus to accommodate different food allergies or in some cases have entirely separate menus. While its very nice when a restaurant tries to accommodate my allergy by offering gluten free pasta or gluten free bread, its not something I search for when I go out to eat. Ultimately, I like restaurants with great food and ambience so I can enjoy eating out with friends. I also added some brunch and happy hour favorites for you too.

    Lunasia Dim Sum House

DIm sum is traditionally a breakfast or brunch meal, but at Lunasia Dim Sum House it’s an all-day affair, served daily from open to close. Wait times are long – especially on weekends – but well worth it for dim sum that’s on par with the best in Hong Kong. Instead of traditional push carts, diners fill out menus for made-to-order dim sum. Tea is served in cast iron teapots.

Everyone has their favorites at Lunasia, but the massive Jumbo Pork & Shrimp Shumai and Jumbo Har Gow are musts. The Baked BBQ Pork Bun is another standout – the sticky-sweet bun melts in your mouth. How This 82-Year-Old Bakery In Chinatown Makes Lou Po Bing (Winter Melon Pastry)

Below, youre going to discover the best 100% gluten free restaurants and bakeries, and a couple of places that arent dedicated gluten free, but have processes in place to minimize cross-contamination based on my experience.

There are almost certainly more gluten free restaurants in L.A. But they arent on the list because I havent personally reached out to them to talk to them about their processes. Ive seen a lot of gluten free friendly menus that Im not sure I trust.

That being said, always always always double check with each restaurant for yourself. Things change in kitchens all the time. You need to make sure that the restaurant can meet your needs and expectations, which might be different than mine.

Plus, I always say that you should never take an internet strangers word for it. Even mine!

With that out of the way, lets get into the best gluten free restaurants in L.A.

How To Talk To A Server About Your Gluten

The best way to discuss your gluten-free needs with a waiter or server is to try to speak with someone who speaks your language fluently and understands your requests.

When youre sure you can communicate effectively, explain that you need to find gluten-free options and ask for a gluten-free menu.

If there isnt one available, you may want to ask them to point out on the menu which dishes use rice or rice noodles and no soy or dark colored sauces.

Read on: Is white rice gluten-free?

Another great way to communicate with your server is to bring a gluten-free restaurant card with you.

I found some great ones from Celiac Travel and they even have an app called Gluten Free Restaurant Cards to help you share your needs in different languages. You can show it to them so they can speak with the cooks about your options.

One other strategy I use is to look at menus online before I head out to a restaurant. This feels important to me, so I have time to review what my options are and take my time figuring out if theres a possibility that I can make it work.

I know it doesnt sound very spontaneous, and its quite boring to know exactly what you will order before you even step foot in a restaurant, but when you have dietary restrictions, thats the name of the game.

Look ahead to be prepared or find another restaurant to go to.
