Fruity Pebbles And Cocoa Pebbles

Gluten-Free Multi-Grain Hot Cereal (Porridge)

Post Foods earned kudos from those with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity when it announced that it had made its popular Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles cereals gluten-free .

The company also said it was responding to health concerns by lowering the sugar content of its cereals to nine grams per serving.

Although most people think of Pebbles cereals as a kids product, Ive known plenty of adults who like them. Gluten-free consumers can find Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles in most supermarkets.

Risks And Side Effects

Even when someone doesnt have a negative reaction to eating gluten, its possible that he or she might experience some symptoms when eating gluten-free grains.

What are the potential side effects of oats? These may include gastrointestinal troubles, including bloating, cramping or diarrhea.

This might be caused by the high level of fiber found in these grains. It is more likely to be a problem for people who arent used to eating high-fiber foods very often.

With some time, these should go away.

Soaking grains overnight and drinking lots of water can also help get rid of digestive problems. Like all other whole grains, soaking oats helps reduce antinutrients and enzymes that can mess with nutrient absorption and digestion.

What To Look At On The Nutrition Facts Label

Once you have determined that a cereal is vegan, just go ahead and eat it if being vegan is your only concern. If you are trying to find a cereal that is nutritious and beneficial for your health, there are a few things you should take a look at on the nutrition facts label.

Fiber

In any cereal, vegan or not, its good to check the amount of fiber per serving. I would recommend looking for at least 5 grams of fiber per serving of cereal. If your fiber needs are higher, look for even more per serving!

In the cereals on this post, I have included the amount of fiber per serving. Make sure you pay attention to the serving size as well, because if one cereal says 3 grams of fiber and the serving size is ½ cup, it has the same amount of fiber as a cereal that says 6 grams if the serving size is one cup.

Protein

People often dont need nearly as much protein as they think, but its still important to get some protein into every meal. Everybodys protein needs differ based on their bodies and activity levels, so figure out what your own protein needs are and ensure that the protein in the cereal you choose is adequate for your health.

Added Sugar

I have listed added sugar here instead of just sugar because there is a difference. Added sugar is often refined and unhealthy, whereas naturally occurring sugar, such as sugar found in fruit, is not something to worry about for most people.

Some Ingredients To Avoid Include:

Gluten-Free Granola
  • Natural flavours: When natural flavours is on the ingredients list, theres really no way of knowing what that really means unless you contact the company. It could be vegan, or it could be animal-based. Thats why I tend to just go for things that are explicitly labeled as vegan. Its much easier than dissecting an ingredient list and contacting companies.
  • Sugar: Sugar is sometimes processed with bone char, and again, if the product isnt labeled as vegan, theres usually no way of knowing how the sugar is processed unless you contact the company.
  • Vitamin D: This often comes from lanolin, but there are plant-based sources as well. If it isnt labeled as vegan though, it likely isnt.
  • Honey: There is some debate as to whether or not honey is suitable for vegans, but it does come from an animal, therefore it cant be called vegan. If you choose to eat it though, that is your decision.
  • Gelatin: Unfortunately, several well-know popular cereals contain gelatin, which is derived from animals.

Ancient Harvest Quinoa Flakes

Price: $$$

Although usually served as a lunch or dinner item, quinoa can also be used to make a comforting, nutritious, and hearty hot breakfast cereal.

Much like oatmeal, Ancient Harvests quinoa flakes are shelf stable and cook quickly, but theyre made exclusively from organic white quinoa.

A 1/2-cup serving provides approximately 5 grams of fiber, 9 grams of protein, and 0 grams of added sugar.

Note the manufacturer recommends a serving size of 1/3 cup . Ancient Harvests quinoa flakes are labeled gluten-free but not certified gluten-free by a third-party organization.

Price: $

One major drawback of most breakfast cereals is their relatively low protein content.

If youre looking for a convenient cereal that contains higher than average amounts of protein, Erin Bakers Ultra Protein Granola is worth a try.

It packs 10 grams of plant-based protein in each 1/2-cup serving, alongside 4 grams of fiber and just 7 grams of sugar.

Made from a combination of oats, peanut butter, and pea protein, its sweetened with brown rice syrup and molasses.

This product is not certified gluten-free by a third-party organization, but Erin Bakers independently tests its products to ensure compliance with the FDAs gluten-free labeling requirements.

How I Determined If A Cereal Is Gluten Free

To determine if a cereal is gluten free, I looked at the following criteria:

  • Packaging: I first looked at the product packaging. Does it have any gluten-free claims on the packaging?
  • Ingredient List: Next, I looked at the ingredient list. Does the ingredient list contain wheat, barley, rye, oats or derivatives of these ingredients such as malt .
  • Research: If I still questioned if a cereal was gluten free, I researched the brand online, carefully inspecting the companys website.
  • Nima Sensor Test: Finally, I used my Nima Sensor to test each cereal.

People with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities cannot eat gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and sometimes oats. Gluten destroys the lining of the small intestine in people with celiac disease, causing nutritional deficiencies and a slew of disorders. It also creates inflammation and leaky gut in the 18 million people suffering from non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

Did you know that gluten creates inflammation in all humans? Its true and you can read more about it in this article, Does Gluten Cause Inflammation in Everyone?

While gluten is clearly found in many cereals you love like Frosted Mini Wheat , its not so clear if its found in products that do not include wheat, barley or rye.

  • Know What To Look For

Before we get into ingredients to avoid, lets take a look at some ingredients that can be part of a nutritious and gluten free cereal:

    • Granola: A high quality gluten free granola contains healthy fats and little added unrefined sugar. Be sure to confirm that the granola is made in a gluten free facility to ensure there is no chance of cross-contamination with a gluten-containing food.
    • Nuts and seeds: Nuts add a great punch of nutrition with micronutrients and healthy fats that help to stabilize blood sugar. They also add a great and satisfying crunch. As always, ensure that the nuts in your cereal are prepared in a gluten free facility.
    • Berries: Berries provide important vitamins and antioxidants as well as fiber. They do tend to be heavily sprayed with pesticides, so choose organic when possible. You can also make berries more affordable by opting for frozen varieties. Frozen berries are often picked at the peak of freshness and at the height of their optimal season, making them just as nutrient dense as fresh berries.
    • Coconut: Coconut flakes are made from shaved coconut meat and provide an excellent flavor and texture to cereal. They also provide a good source of healthy fat, fiber, and nutrients like manganese and copper.

    It All Starts With Oats

Cheerios have always been made of oats, which are naturally gluten free. However, conventional farming practices as well as common grain handling procedures allow chances for gluten containing grains to co-mingle with our gluten free oats. To make Cheerios gluten-free, we have to separate the oats from grains that contain gluten, which are different sizes and shapes. Our cleaning house can sort 3.5 million pounds of oats every day.
