Celiac.com 09/01/2021 – Wondering what beers are NOT gluten-free and unsafe for people with celiac disease?

We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain products are gluten-free. One question we see a lot is about beers. Specifically, what beers are NOT gluten-free and unsafe for people with celiac disease? The short answer is that nearly every commercially available beer on the market is made with barley, which contains gluten, so unless special enzymes and filtering are used during the brewing process to render them gluten-free, would not be gluten-free.

What Type Of Beer Is Gluten Free Your Complete Guide

Gluten free has become all the rage in the last two decades, and in the last few years the number of restaurants, cafes, and food and drink brands that have begun to offer gluten free options has skyrocketed.

But who ever thought that beer would be gluten free?

Its actually much easier than you realize to brew gluten free beer, and it can be both helpful for your clients with severe disease and for those just looking for a change in their diet or a new flavor and aroma profile.

Finding The Best Gluten

10 Best Gluten

Both Kennedy and Hill have celiac disease, so consuming even tiny amounts of gluten could wreak havoc on their small intestines.

Theyre accustomed to seeking out gluten-free options for everything from pizza to beer.

However, Hill says she knows people often expect gluten-free to not be as good as gluten-full.

Thats why she set up a blind beer tasting with friends who dont have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. They wrote down tasting notes and scores, then averaged their rankings for the very best gluten-free beers.

There are dozens of gluten-free beers on the market, so Kennedy, Hill, and Hills friends cant claim to have sampled them all.

And as is the case with glute-free food or gluten-free wine, your beer preferences might differ from theirs.

Based on Hills taste test and Kennedys gluten-free clients recommendations, here are five strong choices, an honorable mention, and a bonus pick.

This barley-free Belgian Dubbel looks and feels like Guinness, with a dark coloring and rich, foamy head.

Hill says that though the texture reminds her of Coca-Cola, the flavor is all chocolaty and caramelly goodness.

Greens notes a hint of toffee and brown sugar with a distinct yeast bouquet, despite the beers lack of gluten.

This is hands down my favorite GF beer Ive ever tried, not to mention my top scorer, Hill says.

Unlike gluten-free beers that start using gluten-free grains from the beginning, gluten-reduced beers are made from cereal grains that naturally have gluten, like malted barley and wheat.

Then, an enzyme is added to the brew during the fermentation process to neutralize the gluten.

While some people avoid Gluten free foods due to having a very serious medical condition , others are simply trying to better themselves by sticking to a strict gluten free diet.

Best Wheat Beer: Ghostfish Shrouded Summit Witbier

Region: Washington | ABV: 4.8% | Tasting Notes: Juniper, citrus

Ghostfish Brewing Company is a gluten-free Seattle brewery that offers an inspiring lineup. It’s distributed to a number of states in the U.S. and a few Canadian provinces. The primary grain is malted millet, but some also use buckwheat, brown rice, or sorghum. Its like any other craft brewery with a variety of year-round and seasonal beers. The IPAs are a hit with hopheads, and the blonde and pale ales offer a pleasing maltiness. The seasonals include sour and spicy beers, a pumpkin ale, and a stout.

In Shrouded Summit Belgian White Ale , youll find a beer that rivals any Belgian witbier. How Ghostfish pulled it off with millet, buckwheat, and rice is an amazing feat of brewing genius. With the help of a few adjuncts, this hazy golden brew even has the styles signature kiss of sweet orange and coriander spice.

Ipswich Ale Brewery Celia Saison

Ah, sorghum beers. Cant live with em, would prefer to live without em. Personally, I will reach for almost anything over a sorghum beer, but since they account for a significant portion of GF offerings, you might as well know which one to pick. The Celia Saison from Ipswich Brewery in Massachusetts is a solid choice. Belgian yeast leaves our girl Celia with a slightly spicy funk, which is balanced by the the tart citrus from the addition of orange peel in the brewing process.

Glutenberg White is my favorite gluten free beer right now. I gave it a 4.9 just because nothing is perfect and giving it a 5 would mean it could never get better. Its damn close.

I really enjoy the taste of Glutenberg White. Its super smooth. Not filling. Great flavor. I could drink this all day long. I have to be careful with this one. Image by https://gotoliquorstore.com

There is no gluten in Corona, nor is there gluten-free flour in its ingredients. It can be used in other light beers such as Michelob Ultra, Bud Light, Stella Artois, Coors Light, Michelob Light, and other light pale beers.

A look at the facts about this very sensitive topic. Gluten has been found in all of our beers. Gluten is found in barley, and if you have gluten sensitivity, you should avoid it. No single case of gluten-free beer can be taken seriously unless there is sufficient anecdotal evidence. There is no standard test or method for determining the gluten content of regular beer. Because beer is typically brewed with glutenous grains like barley, the American beer industry does not allow the term gluten-free. If you have a gluten-free diet, you should avoid Corona consumption, even if you dont notice any symptoms outside of the lab.

The prevalence of gluten-free diets has increased significantly in recent years due to the fact that many people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity have found that removing gluten from their diets causes no symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, or joint pain. While Corona is not a gluten-free beer, it has a refreshing flavor and a low carbohydrate content that is ideal for those with gluten sensitivities.
