Gluten Free Breakfast Bar Ingredient Notes:

  • Make your own oat flour by whirring rolled oats in a coffee grinder or blender, its easy and works great! A blender also works well! just note that the end texture will have more texture than professionally milled gluten free oat flour.
  • When it comes to the jam filling, we have many options to choose from! Trader Joes make some great lower sugar jams that we love. St Dalfours brand has no added sugars and is sweetened with fruit juice only.

Copycat Nutri Grain Bars

  • 1cupplus 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 2tbspcorn starch
  • 1cupold fashioned oats
  • 1/2teaspoonsalt
  • 4tbspunsalted buttermelted
  • 1/4cupcoconut oil
  • 1/4cupmilk plus 2 tbsp milk


  • 3cupsfrozen mixed berries
  • 1tbsplemon juice
  • In a large sauce pan over medium-high heat, combine berries, lemon juice and sugar.
  • Stir very frequently. As the berries soften, use your spoon to squish them a bit.
  • Once mixture comes to a boil, use a thermometer to measure temperature. When the mixture reaches 220 degrees, remove from heat. This will take about 15 minutes.
  • Allow filling to cool completely before using for bars.


  • In a large bowl or base of stand mixer, stir together almond flour, 1 cup of all purpose flour, corn starch, oats, salt, baking powder and cinnamon.
  • Once combined, add melted butter, coconut oil, vanilla, eggs, honey, and 1/4 cup milk. Beat until a soft dough forms, about 3 minutes.
  • Form dough into a ball as best you can , and cover in plastic wrap. Place in refrigerator for at least two hours.
  • Flour a working surface with about 1/4 cup flour . Using your hands, spread out dough as best as you can. Sprinkle top of dough with extra flour and roll to about 1/8-1/4″ thickness.
  • Cut dough into 4 inch by 4 inch squares.

With only small amounts of fiber and protein in each Nutri-Grain bar, theyre very unlikely to keep you satiated for long. Nutri-Grain bars are high in added sugar while containing only middling amounts of fiber and protein. Quite honestly, thats a terrible formula if youre looking for a healthy, nutritious bar.

Can Gluten Free Cereal Bars Be Made Healthy

They can!! Many commercial varieties have some major issues:

  • expensive
  • loaded with sugar! A high sugar breakfast is not in the best interest of anyone, including our kids! Sugar is a short lived energy burst followed by an inevitable sugar crash. A balanced meal of slow burn high fiber carbs with some protein and healthy fats is a much better way to go.
  • problematic ingredients: when conventional corn and wheat products are used, there is a high likelihood of their being GMOs inside. For us, this a is a big problem as glyphosate residue in GMO crops in the US are often bed mates. I dont think anyone could argue the damage that Roundup, in any amount ,can cause our guts!! My son is super sensitive to it.

Schools back in session! My kids just finished their first week back to school and they couldnt be happier. They thrive off the routine, seeing their friends and being in a classroom setting. So good for their little growing brains! Im so thankful they actually get excited about going to go school. Its definitely a happy place for them.

This mama has entered a new stage of life this year with both of my kids in school all day. What am I going to do with myself? 7 hours all alone, in a quite house. The first few days were a bit weird, but then I realized the perks. Lunch dates with friends, morning walks and scheduled time to focus on this whole blog thing. As much as I adore my two seriously cute kids, Im enjoying this new freedom!

School mornings are always the craziest mornings in our house. Getting lunches made, making sure my kids are on top of their t0-do lists , and putting together a quick breakfast for them to eat before heading out the door. Neither of them love cereal, so I have to get creative. Like with these berry breakfast bars!

This healthy breakfast bars recipe is made with whole grain oats and oat flour, and plain yogurt. The perfect grab-and-go recipe for busy weekday mornings and they taste just like Nutri-Grain bars!

These bars certainly arent sugar-free, and they have more than just whole grain oats and oat flour, but it can be so fun for a gluten free family to eat what everyone else can have. The crust on these bars is perfectly tender and chewy, and only lightly sweet, so the strawberry filling seems just right.

Dont worry that there are more than a couple of ingredient in this recipe! You make the simple crust all in one bowl, then roll out the dough, cut it into 4-inch squares and fill them with some preserves.

Sugar Free Nutrigrain Style Bars

I have always thought I had a pretty healthy diet. And, compared to many young people around me, I probably did. But when I quit sugar, I had some pretty serious withdrawal symptoms, and I started to realise just how much my supposedly healthy diet had been crammed full of sugar.

I would start my day with a glass of fruit juice and a bowl of muesli followed by homemade bread with homemade jam and ! Follow that up with a sweet home-baked snack, a lunch served with sweet chilli sauce and a slice of homemade cake made with raw sugar or honey, and I would have consumed at least 3 or 4 days worth without blinking, all while believing I was making healthy choices.

One of the worst offenders for me was snacks. They were nearly always sweet, and when they were shop-bought they were often cereal bars. I dont know why, perhaps it was the packaging that marketed them as healthy and refined sugar free, but I never thought to read the labels on them. It wasnt until I gave up sugar and started reading them that I realised how crammed they were with sugar. That often the first ingredient was dates or maple syrup or honey, followed by dried fruit and sometimes even sugary chocolate as well!

So here they are, my sugar free Nutrigrain bars. Im pretty proud of them. They really do taste like the original, but not so sickly sweet, and are actually packed with fibre, fruit, and no sugar at all.

Remember nutri-grain bars? Those deliciously sugar-filled things masquerading as a healthy snack? We miss them. Well we used to miss them, we should say.. because once again the wonder brains at Udis have come to our rescue!

These Udis soft n chewy breakfast bars are available in a few flavours, but the classic strawberry is our winner. We scoffed the box in a matter of moments, and were not even ashamed.

How To Keep The Filling In The Bar

The biggest trick with baking these bars is keeping the filling from leaking out onto the baking sheet during baking. First, know that some filling will most likely leak out.

Preserves are relatively thick, as far as jams and jellies go, but they still melt in the oven. Ive got some tricks for keeping the filling inside the bars, though.

Keeping the shaped and filled bars cold before baking will help quite a lot. The longer the dough itself takes to spread at all in the oven, the better.

As written, the recipe makes a relatively stiff dough, which helps to lock in the filling. You dont want the dough to be so stiff that its a struggle to knead or roll it out. But if you keep it from being too soft, it will help do its job better.

Finally, this recipe was originally published on the blog in 2012, when my youngest was only 7. That has nothing to do with keeping the filling in the bars. I just wanted to show her to you wearing a sweet tie-dyed dress, holding her very first Nutri-Grain bar in her little 7-year-old hands ?
