What Are Peanuts Used For

Organic Gluten Free Tiger Nuts Sliced

Peanuts have so many different uses in the American diet, and youre likely to find peanut or some form of peanuts at just about every grocery store you step foot into.

Peanuts can be enjoyed plain as a snack, either raw or roasted. Many companies offer peanuts with flavorings on them, like honey roasted peanuts or spicy flavored peanuts.

Peanuts are commonly used as a nut butter in the form of peanut butter. This spread is used as a condiment for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, used in homemade peanut sauces, swirled in and on cookies, pies, and ice cream, and of course as a topping for pancakes, waffles, and other breakfast foods.

Peanuts can be cooked, then ground leaving a fine peanut powder. This powder is high in protein and can be added as a peanut butter protein powder for smoothies. A version of this powder is also used to make different snack foods peanut butter flavored, like Trader Joes Bambas or Pop Chips Nutter Puffs.

How Can Nuts Be Gluten Free

So you are probably asking yourself. Arent all nuts gluten free? What makes Royal Nuts any different? We get asked this question a lot and it really is a good question! Thats why we have taken the time to explain our manufacturing process to let you in on our secret.

Naturally yes, all nuts are gluten free. But, that is not the problem. Through processing typically wheat starch or gluten based starch is added to thicken solution to stick better to the nuts . Not at our Royal Nuts facility. To ensure our nuts are gluten free we avoid the use of any gluten based thickening solution. We dry roast with our own special techniques to keep our nuts true to form. We take gluten and peanut allergies seriously. Thats why we have a rigorous cleaning routine to make sure our royal nuts products are not cross contaminated with any gluten or even with other nuts. Once we roast or pack a certain item, we use all natural cleaning supplies along with hot water to clean our roasters and packaging machines after every run. For example, if we cook almonds for 5hrs, we will clean the machines to switch to cashews. Nuts right?

Are Nuts Safe For Celiacs

Naturally gluten free but do they contain traces of gluten?

Are nuts safe for celiacs? Some of you may be reading this and thinking, seriously? Is this gluten free traveller chick really trying to tell me that I cant eat nuts now? Shes already made me uncertain about my morning coffee and I KNOW that nuts are gluten free. In theory, YES. Nuts themselves are of course naturally gluten free but in my experience its extremely difficult to find any which are free from the threat of cross contamination. And if youre celiac then this is a real concern.

Heres what led me to write this post..

I was at my local farmers market yesterday buying tasty fruit and veggies for the week and I noticed there were various nuts for sale. I asked the guy selling almonds whether they were safe for celiacs. He told me that they are manufactured on machinery with a whole bunch of stuff and so he couldnt confirm that they are safe. I told him that I am celiac and therefore cant risk eating anything which may have been cross contaminated by gluten. His response was I wouldnt recommend that you eat any almonds at all Im very happy that these lovely guys were honest with me but it leaves me with a problem. Where is a celiac to find cross contamination free, gluten free nuts?

Where you do find your nuts? Perhaps you dont eat nuts or perhaps youre buying them without knowing for sure? Id love to hear your thoughts on this

How To Read Labels

There are regulations in place to ensure only foods that are truly gluten-free can use the label on their packaging. All packaged foods in the UK and the EU are covered by labelling laws, which include rules around the allergen information that has to be provided on the label. For example, gluten-containing cereals are one of the 14 listed allergens that must be listed and emphasised in the ingredients list. Therefore, if a cereal contains wheat, rye or barley for example, it must be listed in the ingredients list, no matter how little of it is used. You can read more about labelling laws at Coeliac UK.

Aw Nuts: Balancing A Nut

When I was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2002, I had just returned from my honeymoon. I had been suffering for years with digestive issues, anemia and other nutritional deficiencies, and I was lucky to get a diagnosis before attempting to have children. My body was able to heal by the time I did get pregnant only a year later.

I had decided that I would keep my child gluten-free. Though I know celiac disease medical experts recommend being tested for celiac disease before going gluten free, I had a double gene for celiac disease from my mother and father. And my husband had self-diagnosed gluten sensitivity. For our family having everyone follow the gluten-free diet was the right choice, and I was prepared to make it work.

Which Nuts Are Gluten

Nuts in all types of tree nuts, seeds, or legumes, are naturally gluten-free. Therefore, if you buy raw nuts such as almonds, pecans, walnuts, pine nuts, pistachios, cashews, sunflower seeds, sesame, or pumpkin seeds, you can be sure that there is no gluten in them.

But its better to be careful about the roasted and flavoured nuts because they might have some additives to make them tastier.

To reach this goal, sometimes wheat is added to them thus, they might have gluten. However, if you are not allergic to this protein, you wont need to be concerned since the low amount of gluten wont affect your health.

Many people avoid gluten, a group of proteins found in grains like wheat, barley, and rye, due to personal preference or a medical condition .

Celiac disease, wheat allergy, and non-celiac gluten sensitivity all involve an adverse reaction to gluten and are treated with a gluten-free diet. These conditions are considered forms of gluten intolerance .

While both celiac disease and NCGS may lead to intestinal damage and cause symptoms like diarrhea, gas, and bloating, celiac is an autoimmune condition linked to other serious health effects, such as anemia, stunted growth, and neurological effects .

Wheat allergy refers to an allergic reaction to wheat proteins, the symptoms of which may be life threatening. This condition is treated with a wheat-free diet, not necessarily a gluten-free diet .

Although people with wheat allergies must avoid wheat, most are able to eat other grains, including gluten-containing ones like barley and rye.

Meanwhile, people with celiac disease and NCGS must avoid all gluten-containing foods to control symptoms. Notably, many healthy foods are naturally gluten-free, and quite a few companies make scrumptious gluten-free products.

Here are 8 foods to avoid if you have a gluten intolerance, as well as 7 you can safely eat.

You should steer clear of the following foods if you have a gluten intolerance.
