How Is Gluten Broken Down In The Body
Gluten is a complex structure consisting of different proteins. The two main proteins in gluten are gliadin and glutenin and different grains also have their own specific proteins.
Gluten is hard for the body to digest. One of the main reasons is because gliadin is not easily broken down. Gliadin itself contains amino acids which function as the building blocks of proteins that the gastrointestinal tract has trouble metabolizing. These two tricky amino acids in Gliadin are called proline and glutamine.
When you eat gluten, the undigested parts make their way to the small intestine. In most people, this doesnt cause any problems. But, if you have a wheat allergy or celiac disease, the undigested gluten can trigger an immune response. This causes damage to the surface of the intestine, leading to inflammation.

Celiac sufferers tired of sitting out on beer and pizza nights may soon get a bit of a reprieve.
A “gluten pill,” developed by scientists at the University of Alberta, aims to help cut down the headaches, intestinal issues and digestive problems faced by that those with celiac disease when the ingest gluten.
Hoon Sunwoo, an associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the U of A, told CBC News he first started working on the pill to help out a friend.
“My friend is celiac. We haven’t had any entertaining with beers. So, that’s why I develop this pill for my friend,” he said.
The pill is made from the yolks of chicken eggs and prevent the absorption of gliadin a gluten component that those with celiac disease have problems digesting.
“This supplement binds with gluten in the stomach and help to neutralize it, therefore providing defence to the small intestine, limiting the damage gliadin causes,” Sunwoo told techtimes.com.
Sunwoo explained to Metro News that those with celiac disease can take the pill right before eating a meal containing gluten and enjoy foods that are normally off limits to them for the next couple of hours.
However, he wants people to know that the pill isn’t designed to cure the disease, but rather will help those with celiac disease have more choices about what to eat and drink without worrying about nasty side effects.
According to techtimes.com, the pill is still under development and will undergo efficacy trials in the next year.

What The Experts Think About Gluten Digestion Supplements
While talk of enzymes and digestive breakdown all sounds highly scientific, some experts are skeptical that gluten-digesting pills really get to the source of the problem. The descriptions of some of the gluten-digesting products state that the ingredients act upon the carbohydrate component of gluten-containing grains, says , a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. But gluten is a protein, not a carbohydrateso the ingredients in a supplement may not target the actual source of discomfort.
Research on the pills effectiveness is also mixed. A 2015 study looked at digestive supplements containing protease and found they didnt break down the part of gluten that creates an immune response. On the other hand, a 2018 study on a supplement with peptidaseanother common ingredient in these pillsshowed it actually did improve symptoms in people with NCGS. Because so few studies have been conducted on the subject, theres no great medical consensus on what these enzyme blends can and cant do.
Are Otc Gluten Digestion Pills Effective
The short answer? Probably not. Studies have found that OTC gluten digestion pills arent that effective.
One study looked at five different OTC gluten digestion pills. The researchers found that they lacked the ability to break gluten down into a more easily digestible form. This was because the majority of the digestive enzymes in these pills were the type that break down starches, not gluten.
And, the enzymes that could break down gluten were most active at a pH of 6 to 8. A pH is a measure of how acidic or basic something is. The stomachs pH is much lower than 6 . Therefore, the gluten digestion pills werent as active in the more acidic environment of the stomach.
Another study evaluated nine different OTC gluten digestion pills and came to a similar conclusion. But, there was one gluten digestion product included in the study that worked well. It contained an enzyme called caricain. It was also enteric coated, meaning it was designed to dissolve in the small intestine rather than in the stomach. This formulation was the only pill included in the study that was found to be effective at digesting gluten proteins.
If you have a gluten intolerance and are interested in trying gluten digestion pills, talk to your healthcare provider first. Even if the pills make you feel better, it doesnt guarantee that damage isnt being done to your body. Your body may still experience inflammation even if you dont have obvious symptoms.
