Gluten Free Pigs in a Blanket (using Veggie Dogs)

Looking for gluten free hot dogs? While this list is not exhaustive, these are brands which I mostly trust. While I am not a huge fan of Bar-S, they are safe and offer a cheaper alternative than others on my short list. The first six brands offer beef hot dogs for those looking to avoid pork. For this recipe I used the Nathans Uncured Beef Franks.

Make entertaining fun with these gluten free pigs in a blanket! Each one has a paleo mini sausage wrapped up snug in almond flour based dough with sea salt on top. They make the perfect appetizer to share with friends and family and can be easily frozen and enjoyed later.

Pigs in a blanket are high on my list of all-time favorite appetizers. I mean how cute is a mini hot dog tightly wrapped up in a dough blanket. They’re SO cute and not to mention…delicious.

As someone who loves entertaining these gluten free pigs in a blanket need to be on your list of go-to appetizers. They would also pair great with my pesto chicken sliders!

Assemble The Pigs In A Blanket

Once you get your store-bought or homemade gluten-free puff pastry in order, its time to assemble and cook your gluten-free pigs in a blanket.

I was able to make 24 gluten-free pigs in a blanket using a single sheet of Schar gluten-free puff pastry. To maximize the dough, I rolled it out , and then used my pizza slicer to cut small rectangles of dough.

I then wrapped each mini hot dog in the dough, pinched the dough together and placed each assembled pig in a blanket seam-side down on my baking sheet.

I then brushed the tops with egg wash for a more browned look. This is optional and please check the instructions on any store-bought brand to see if this step is recommended. Its a recommended step when using my puff pastry recipe.

All I Want For Christmas

This past Christmas we hosted Christmas Eve at our apartment. We had decided to keep it simple, turkey, rice and beans, and Dill Dip Of course, nothing can be that easy.

I asked my husband what he wanted me to make him for Christmas and he wanted Pigs in a Blanket and a Chantilly Cake .

Pigs in a Blanket are traditionally made with crescent roll dough. If you have been gluten free for any length of time, you know that pre-made crescent roll dough does not exist, so as with many things that are gluten free, I had to make it myself.

We needed something to dip them in so I made a quick four ingredient honey mustard sauce .

What Makes This Recipe So Good

  • First off, it only requires 30 minutes of hands-on time.

Roll The Pigs In A Blanket

Place a wiener on the wide end of a wedge and roll the dough around it, rolling towards the point. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Note: If the dough breaks or cracks, simply press it back together with your fingers. The dough will not be as pliable as regular wheat dough.

Beat the egg and water in a small bowl to make the egg wash and brush over the rolls.

Pro Tips And Recipe Notes

  • I prefer the taste of milk instead of water in my batter. So if you can tolerate dairy, go with milk. I think youll like them that way.
  • Go with your favorite pancake mix. Today, I used Pamelas gluten free baking & pancake mix for the pancake. Ive also made this recipe with King Arthur pancake mix. It has a touch of honey flavor in it. Yum.
  • Choose your favorite sausages. I like Applegate Farms sausage because theyre not only gluten free, but also antibiotic free, with no added hormones. You may prefer Jones sausage which are all natural and gluten free, too.
  • Preheat your griddle on medium before pouring your batter on so that theyll start to cook as soon as they hit the pan, but not too hot that theyll scorch.
  • Wipe you griddle after every batch and use a new pat of butter so that your butter doesnt burn.
  • Serving suggestions: Sprinkle each with powdered sugar, drizzle with maple syrup and watch them disappear. You might prefer a pat of butter, honey, jam, candied nuts or even whipped cream. Its up to you.

The easiest gluten free pigs in a blanket you will ever sink your teeth into. They look great when served on a platter for game day or as a snack for any time the mood strikes!

Any appetizer fans here besides me? I could definitely make a meal out of them! Pigs in a blanket are such tasty snacks. And it’s been over a decade since I was able to enjoy them! But thanks to Schar’s frozen gluten-free puff pastry, they are possible once again!

Gluten Free Crescent Dough

While many gluten free brands have recreated what we miss, refrigerated crescent rolls are not one of them. Therefore, this recipe features my homemade gluten free crescent dough. In reality, its not hard to make. It simple takes time to make and rise. Once you have that, these gluten free pigs in a blanket are easy!

The trick for this recipe is to roll the dough thin. Like pie crust thin. Please note my recipe for gluten free crescent dough makes one pound. Therefore, youll roll out two separate circles of dough. Once rolled, cut it into 12 equal triangles. My package of hot dogs contained 6 links, and I cut them in half. You want to try to make the edge of the dog peeks out over the edge of the dough triangle before rolling.

Best Way To Store Them

After baking, serve these little bites up as soon as possible . If you have any left over, store them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Helpful tip:To freeze and reheat later preheat oven to 350F. Place the frozen pigs in a blanket on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Cover loosely with foil. Heat for 10 minutes, serve immediately.

Tools For Making This Recipe Easier

Gluten

Pizza Cutter: This helps for cutting the puff pastry into triangles. You can also just use a sharp knife. I got mine on sale at TJ Maxx.

Silicone Mats: Not required, but helpful and less wasteful than using parchment paper. I use SilPat because they last forever!

Pastry Brush: I found mine at TJ Maxx! I have 4 in different colors.

It was early in the year 2006 that Mrs. F. Katz had just about enough of the lackluster gluten-free products she could find in stores. She had two children with gluten intolerance, and shopping with their allergy in mind was a struggle. Can I Use Any Kind Of Hot Dogs For These Gluten Free Pigs In A Blanket

Yes! Most sausages and hotdogs are, thankfully, gluten-free. The exceptions tend to fall under specific types of add-ins such as the alcohol in beer brats. As always, make sure you read the ingredients list carefully. Here is a comprehensive hot dog list to help you know for sure. This recipe uses all beef, full size hot dogs.

How Do I Prevent My Crescent Roll Dough From Sticking

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Pigs In A Blanket Appetizer Recipe | Fluffy & Delicious!

Wax paper, a flat spatula and a generous sprinkle of flour will be incredibly helpful tools to prevent the dough from sticking to the counter. Just sprinkle the flour over the wax paper before rolling it out. Then after the dough is sectioned off, slide a flat spatula under the dough before rolling each pig in a blanket up.

Theyll be easy to transfer to a baking sheet after a nice tight roll.

Ingredients Needed For Gluten Free Pigs In A Blanket

The dough comes together in a food processor in a few minutes. Just make sure that you dont overprocess the dough: Once it has come together stop running the processor. After its made you CAN roll out the dough right away, which we love. This is unusual for pie crusts, that usually need to wait to rest and firm up. We found it easiest to roll the dough between two sheets of plastic. Normally we shy away from plastics, but in this crust it really is easiest if you use that vs. parchment paper. But if you dont keep plastic in your home , parchment will do in a bind!

During testing we discovered that oat flour is a bit difficult to measure out properly in the cup measurement because sometimes it is more densely packed in the bag than others. For fool proof measuring you can weigh out the oat flour instead. If you find your dough a bit more wet than the above photo add in oat flour a tablespoon at a time until it feels workable.

Chilling & Rolling The Dough

After the dough is combined, transfer to a plate lined with wax paper. Make sure theres a bit of gluten-free baking flour on the bottom of the wax paper before placing the dough down. Refrigerate the dough for two to three hours.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Now, get the gluten-free baking flour ready. The dough will be sticky and youll need to continuously dust the dough to prevent it from sticking which, will help you roll it out. Grab the refrigerated dough and divide it into two even balls. Then, place the first one on a piece of wax pax paper thats been dusted. Dust the top of the dough, then use a rolling pin to roll out the dough into a 12 circle.

Use a knife or pizza cuter to slice the dough into pie slices. You should have eight evenly sized triangles. Remember to dust as you go to prevent the dough from sticking to you, the rolling pin, or wax paper.

Can These Be Made Dairy And Egg Free Can I Use A Different Flour

I have only successfullymade my crescent dough using the recipe below, and only with Cup 4 Cup Multipurpose Flour. Cup 4 Cup contains milk powder, and the recipe uses butter & eggs. I tried using Bobs Red Mill Flour, and King Arthur Flour Measure for Measure, and they just didnt turn out the same for me.

Therefore, I would try this recipe for Gluten Free Vegan Garlic Crescent Rolls from Petite Allergy Treats if you need the dough to be vegan. However, please note that she starts with her own gluten free white mix flour blend. Please remember that all gluten free flours are NOT the same. If you choose to use a different flour blend, results may vary.

Are Mini Smoked Sausages Gluten Free

It is always best to verify labels on the specific packages. As of the writing of this recipe, Hillshire Farms brand and Kroger brand have no gluten-containing ingredients but aren’t specifically labeled gluten-free.

There are several brands of mini hot dogs that are gluten-free. Alternatively, you can select any regular size hot dog, smoked sausage, or another flavor of sausage and cut into 1 to 1 ½ inch pieces.

How To Serve Them
