Dairy Free Gluten Free Naan Bread

The dairy in this recipe comes from the plain yogurt and the butter or ghee. I recommend replacing the butter/ghee in the dough with extra virgin olive oil.

I actually have made this recipe with olive oil in the dough in place of the butter or ghee, and I prefer it because it has some depth of flavor that many other butter substitutes I can imagine.

Since olive oil is pure fat and a liquid even at cold room temperature, the dough will be a bit softer and less pleasant to shape, though.

Try replacing the plain yogurt with a nondairy plain yogurt. My favorite nondairy plain yogurt is made by So Delicious. Silk is fine, too. I really don’t care for Kite Hill or any of the other almond-based nondairy yogurts I have tried.

Cooking with something you otherwise might eat only serves to intensify the flavor of the ingredient, so if it tastes slightly off to you, don’t cook or bake with it.

Do I Need Any Special Equipment To Make Your Gluten Free Naan Bread Recipe

Gluten Free Naan Bread (and dairy free version)

Certainly not! Just a frying pan, bowl, a rolling pin, a silicone spatula and a well-floured surface to roll everything out on will suffice. No electronic equipment required!

Having a rolling pin like mine makes this recipe a doddle because you can adjust how thick you want the dough. No more guesswork!

Do I Need Weighing Scales To Bake Your Gluten Free Naan Bread Recipe

In short yes, yes and yes! And I wouldnt advise attempting any of my recipes without them. One of the worst things you can do in any baking recipe is alter the quantities by mistake or on purpose.

A lot of work went into fine tuning ratios and quantities so I wouldnt mess around with them unless you really know your stuff. Id recommending using digital cooking scales like these so you know youre getting an accurate measurement.

What Yoghurt Should I Use For This Recipe

Its totally up to you I like to keep this vegan and dairy free so I used Koko dairy free plain yoghurt. It also has no high FODMAP ingredients in it.

But if you dont mind it being NOT dairy free or vegan, feel free to use plain natural yoghurt or greek yoghurt too.

Lactose free plain yoghurt is the best for the elimination phase of the low FODMAP diet.

Can I Make This Recipe Without Xanthan Gum

Gluten free naan bread

As I said, theres a little xanthan gum in self-raising flour already that will help to replace the gluten in regular flour. So in a sense, yes you can skip adding more xanthan gum, though I always make mine with it just to be safe. It really helps the texture!

But if you wanted to make this with gluten free plain flour and no xanthan gum, then youre on your own I wouldnt recommend it!

Distilled Beverages And Vinegars

Most distilled alcoholic beverages and vinegars are gluten-free. These distilled products do not contain any harmful gluten peptides even if they are made from gluten-containing grains. Research indicates that the gluten peptide is too large to carry over in the distillation process, leaving the resulting liquid gluten-free. However, some types of alcoholic beverages do contain an unsafe amount of gluten for people with celiac disease, and include those with added color or flavoring such as dessert wines, and those made from barley malt, such as bottled wine coolers. For these, consumers should check the label, and if in doubt, contact the company. Beers, ales, lagers, malt beverages and malt vinegars that are made from gluten-containing grains are not distilled and therefore are not gluten-free. There are several brands of gluten-free beers available in the United States and abroad.

Gluten Free Naan Bread Recipe With 3 Ingredients Yes It Is Possible And Youd Never Believe This Is Gluten Free Honestly Its Also Vegan Dairy Free And Low Fodmap Too

How to Make Naan: Gluten Free & Whole Wheat

Gluten free naan bread recipe, anyone? Its hard to believe, but you can actually make AMAZING gluten free bread dough out of 3 simple ingredients. Can anyone guess what they are before the big reveal?

Yep, you can can make gluten free beautifully soft, gluten free naan bread that tears like a regular naan bread that youd get in a restaurant.

Its lovely and crisp on the outside, slightly chewy, but with that soft, fluffy texture inside thats perfect for mopping up a curry.

And the best part is that because youre making them yourself, you can flavour them however you like! I went for garlic oil and coriander but you can happily flavour these however you wish.

Ok, ok, Im getting to the three secret ingredients! They are

Gluten free self-raising flour, yoghurt and xanthan gum. Thats it! I know its hard to believe that just two basic ingredients like that and a little xanthan gum could make actual naan bread, but trust me it works like magic.

And the best part is that youd never know that they were gluten free. If you use dairy free yoghurt like I do, that also makes them totally dairy free and vegan too. How crazy is that?

All you need to do is combine the gluten free flour, xanthan gum and yoghurt in a bowl and mix until it forms a dough ball. Then simply roll out on a floured surface and dry fry in a frying pan.

It couldnt be more simple and easy to make these at home!

How To Prepare Gf Naan

First, you make a flax egg by mixing ground flaxseed with water. Skip this step if using an egg.

Add yogurt and oil to the flax egg and mix to combine.

Next, add this yogurt mixture to the dry ingredients, kneading the dough as you go. Then add warm water, bit by bit, until you have a soft dough. If you used an egg, you may not need much water at all.

Divide the dough into 6 balls. If you want to make larger naan, divide the dough into 5 or even 4 pieces.

You can either make round naan, or form the balls into a teardrop shape by rolling one end of the dough between your hands.

Roll out the naan. Sprinkle the nigella seeds now or while you cook them.

Once youre rolled them out, place them on a hot griddle, nonstick pan, or tava. Turn over and cook them with a lid on top to create steam. This allows the naan bread to cook quickly while charring the outside.

Don’t Use Too Much Flour

Since the dough itself is quite wet, you can use a fair amount of extra flour to shape it, but work with it using a very light touch, so you don’t incorporate too much flour. Yeast bread that is too dry simply won’t come out fluffy no matter what else you do.

Shape a piece of dough loosely into a round, and then roll it into an elongated oval. While you’re shaping the dough, heat a heavy-bottom skillet with a bit of ghee or virgin coconut oil. Place each piece of shaped dough in the hot skillet right away.

My Dough Was Too Dry And Cracked And Crumbly

If the dough seems a little crumbly in the bowl, get it out of the bowl and knead it on a floured surface first before adding any extra wet ingredients.

This will ensure that its truly combined and there isnt any yoghurt not properly mixed in at the centre of the dough. A mixture that isnt combined well enough is usually the main cause of a dry dough. Especially if you measured out all of your ingredients accurately, you should avoid getting dough thats either too dry or cracks and crumbles.

Don’t Miss: Does Gluten Cause Acid Reflux

Is Pita Bread Gluten

Traditionally, pita bread is not gluten-free.

It is made with varieties of wheat flours like white, whole wheat, or multigrain which all contain gluten along with a leavening agent like bakers yeast or baking powder, and sugar, oil, and salt.

Fortunately, because gluten-free diets have become popular, gluten-free pita bread may be purchased ready-made. You may also make it at home using gluten-free flours, including:

However, substituting or fortifying wheat flours to produce gluten-free pita bread has been shown to change the quality and texture of the pita dough and cause minor changes to the final product bread .

For example, a 2012 research article demonstrated that pita bread made from 100% pulse flours made from lentil peas, navy beans, or pinto beans produced pita bread with characteristic pockets but slight differences in color and texture .

Fortification with date seed powder also produces a lower-gluten pita bread with similar characteristics to the original wheat-based pita bread .

However, gluten-free versions of bread products including pita may not be enriched with important nutrients. Compared with their gluten-containing whole-grain counterparts, theyre often lower in fiber and other essential nutrients .

Thats one of the reasons why a gluten-free diet isnt always the best choice unless its medically necessary .
