Why Only Some Chocolate Is Gluten

Flourless Dark Chocolate Cake (Gluten-free!)

Yes, pure chocolatemade from roasted cacao beansis gluten-free. But it also doesn’t taste very good. In fact, some people argue that it tastes a little like dirt.

To make the purest version of the sweetened, smooth candy we know as chocolate, manufacturers take what’s called “chocolate liquor” and blend it with cocoa butter , plus sugar.

Some of the highest-quality chocolates available include only these three ingredients and it’s this combination that makes chocolate such a taste sensation. The purest milk chocolates contain just one additional ingredient: powdered milk.

Still, most of what we normally think of as chocolate contains many more than just those three or four ingredients. In fact, one of the most popular candy bars on the marketHershey’s Milk Chocolate Barcontains 11 ingredients and the first two are sugar and milk, not chocolate or cocoa butter.

Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar is considered gluten-free, by the way.

Why To Avoid Chocolates That Have Gluten Content In Them

Gluten has high rye, wheat and barley contents and the presence of any of these ingredients can cause havoc to anybodys health who is allergic to it. So, we offer some of the best flavors in the chocolates totally free of ingredients that might give you allergy. Chocolates are to give your taste buds a bliss of taste and with our gluten-free chocolates, you are going to get the sweetness in abundance.

Can Coeliacs Eat Lindt Balls

The answer is: NO* According to the Lindt FAQ, gluten can be found is many of their product offerings including all of the truffles except for the white chocolate flavor. The ingredient barley can be found in the truffles specifically. Keep that in mind if you have Celiac Disease or a gluten allergy.

Identifying Gluten Free Chocolate Products

For those that have only recently been diagnosed with coeliac disease, we have a helpful section that will walk you through the basics of what to look out for. Even if youre a long-time coeliac though, you may find that you struggle when identifying potential problem ingredients within chocolate. Whilst many will be aware of a lot of the main culprits when it comes to checking food labels, it isnt always easy to spot which chocolate is gluten free.

Keep an eye out for these gluten-based ingredients in particular: barley malt, wheat flour, malt syrup, and some glucose syrups and dextrose.

Anything containing cookie pieces, biscuit chunks or wafer centres are obviously not suitable for people with coeliac disease either.

How Do You Make Gluten Free Brownies With Melted Chocolate

First, melt the chocolate with the oil. I have done this in a saucepan on the stove top, or using a microwave safe mixing bowl and heating for 30 second intervals.

Add the salt and sugar, then mix. I used coarse sea salt because I knew that it would leave little salty bits in my gluten free brownies without them being too salty all over.

Make sure your gluten free brownie batter has cooled to room temp before you add the egg substitute, or eggs.

Mix in the cocoa and the gluten free flour.

It is really important you measure your gluten free flour and cocoa by scooping the flour into a measuring cup with a spoon and then level off the top.

The last thing to do is to add all of the chocolate chunks and chips.

I used about a cup of chocolate, sprinkling about ¼ cup into the batter and the remaining on top of the brownies before they go in the oven.

I also added a few Dark Chocolate Minis, just to up the intensity. Everyone fought over those pieces!

A sprinkle of flaky or coarse sea salt not only makes your gluten free brownies sparkle, but it adds the perfect bursts of salt to balance out all of the chocolate.

To make it easy to remove your brownies from the pan, you can cut a piece of parchment paper and use it to go across the bottom and over two of the sides of the pan making a “sling”.

You can also cut and serve your brownies straight from the pan.

Let your brownies cool slightly before you try cutting them so they have a chance to set.

    Products Without Gluten Ingredients

Some companies that manufacture both gluten-free and non gluten-free products provide lists of products that contain no gluten ingredients. One such company is Nestle, which states that numerous products are gluten-free, including Toll House Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips and Baby Ruth bars. Cadbury also maintains a list of products that do not contain gluten. Chocolate products on this list include Cadbury Creme Eggs and Cadbury Mini Eggs. Examples of chocolate candy that are not gluten-free include:

    • Hershey’s Cookies ‘N’ Creme bar and Nestle’s Kit Kat bar, both of which feature chocolate combined with cookie ingredients
    • M& Ms Pretzel, since the pretzels used are made with wheat
    • Butterfinger Crisp Bar, which contains wheat flour
    • Lindt Chocolate’s Lindor Truffles, because they’re made with barley malt

Finally, most chocolate candy made on equipment that’s also used to manufacture gluten-containing products will not be considered gluten-free. Examples of this include:

    • All Lindt products as they’re made on the same equipment as Lindt chocolate products that are made with barley malt, which means they’re not gluten-free
    • Certain flavored M& Ms, which are made on the same equipment as M& M Pretzel candies
    • Some Butterfinger Bar sizes because, while the ingredients are gluten-free, some sizes of these are made on shared equipment

Types Of Chocolate & Those Most Likely To Contain Gluten

Good quality pure chocolate, of any kind, does not contain gluten.

However, lower quality chocolate, like those in some mass-produced Easter chocolates marketed for kids, could potentially contain fillers like gluten to stretch their product.

This allows them to keep prices low, so they can make more chocolate using less of the high quality chocolate ingredients. So always be sure to check the label on these types of chocolate products.

Chocolate in its pure form is very bitter. The darker and more bitter it is, the more cacao it contains. Chocolate falls into three categories, dark, milk and white , with dark chocolate having sub-categories due to varying levels of its cocoa and sugar content.

Now thats the key question and its solely down to cost. Although wheat flour itself is not used in chocolate, many products made using wheat or containing wheat derivatives are used. Chocolate is often combined with ingredients that contain this protein.

Thats because, gluten, the protein that is found in wheat, is a thickening agent which helps bind the chocolate together. What this really means is that its used to bulk up chocolate, reducing its quality, and making it cheaper to manufacture.

So, a chocolate snack bar that contains a wafer or other ingredient made from wheat will definitely contain gluten, whereas a plain chocolate bar may not. Additionally, many of the fillings in chocolate bars may contain wheat based products for the same reason cost!

The FDA regulates gluten-related labeling. To carry a label that says gluten-free, free of gluten, or without gluten, the product has to contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten. Because that number is not 0 ppm, there could still be trace amounts of gluten particles in products labeled gluten-free.
