How To Make Vegan Hot Chocolate Creamy

Keto Hot Chocolate Powder Mix {Paleo & Dairy-Free Options!}

You are already using real chocolate, and blending the ingredients so they quickly melt into rich and creamy vegan hot chocolate.

Here are a few tips to make your vegan hot chocolate extra creamy:

  • Use a frother. I like to use my battery powered milk frother to get it mixed up really well. It arates the milk, which make your vegan hot chocolate more creamy. I bought milk frother at Ikea, but they are also available at other stores and on Amazon.
  • For super creamy, frothy vegan hot chocolate, you can use your blender to mix it up. It will froth the milk up, similar to a latte.

If you have a high-powered blender, like a Blend-Tec or Vitamix you can blend the dairy-free milk and milk free hot chocolate mix on the “soup” setting and then you don’t have to even heat up your milk.

When I’m making creamy vegan hot chocolate for the whole family, I will pull out my blender. If I’m making vegan hot chocolate for just myself, I stick with my battery milk frother.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hot Chocolate

What is the difference between hot chocolate and hot cocoa?

Hot chocolate and hot cocoa are used interchangeably, but each holds a different meaning. Hot chocolate is made with chocolate bars and is richer than hot cocoa. However, hot cocoa is usually made with cocoa powder only and is blended with water instead of milk.

How long to microwave milk for hot chocolate?

Heat the milk for 1 to 1 ½ minute, at full power in the microwave, before adding the hot chocolate mix. Stir the hot chocolate mix until it completely melts, and enjoy.

How To Make Dairy Free Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

Super easy peasy. In a mason jar or whatever container you want really, but I find mason jars to be such a staple in our house, combine your cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 cup of sugar, and a pinch of salt. And voila, you have a mix that is perfectly sweetened and chocolatey.

We prefer to use cacao versus unsweetened cocoa powder. The difference? Cacao is unprocessed cocoa powder. I think the taste is much richer, but either option works well.

When you are ready to make a mug of hot chocolate, heat your milk or water and add 2 Tbsps of mix per mug. If you are making a lot, the whole jar of mix makes about 6-7 cups of hot chocolate. Enjoy with some whipped cream, marshmallows, or some dairy free whipped cream!

How To Make This Healthy Hot Chocolate

Honestly!

Making this healthy hot chocolate takes less than 10 minutes.

You simply need to add all the ingredients to a small pot and place them over medium heat. For the first minute, use a whisk to combine well and avoid forming lumps.

Then switch to a wooden spoon or a spatula. This will help you to stop the chocolate from sticking to the bottom of the pan and burning.

The last thing you want is the taste of burned chocolate!

Keep stirring until the chocolate starts to simmer.

To get the best thick and creamy consistency, let the chocolate rest a couple of minutes before pouring it into 2 mugs.

All that is left to do is top it with coconut whipped cream and some chocolate nibs if you really want to indulge.

Or simply drink it plain, which is what I normally do!

What Is The Difference Between Hot Chocolate And Hot Cocoa

Hot cocoa is a thinner drink made with milk, sugar, and cocoa powder. Hot chocolate is creamier and richer because it is made with milk, sugar, and chocolate . If it is “hot chocolate” it needs to actually have melted chocolate in it or it is just a good hot cocoa.

It often feels like “hot cocoa” and “hot chocolate” are used synonymously. This is a tragedy, because they really are very different.

You can’t substitute cocoa for chocolate chips in a gluten free chocolate chip cookie recipe, right? Of course it will turn out differently.

How To Shape And Bake Hot Cocoa Cookies

This dough will be on the stickier side. I recommend using a clean medium-sized cookie scoop, around 2 tablespoons, for this recipe.

  • Once the dough for gluten free hot cocoa cookies has chilled for at least 2hrs, preheat the oven to 350F and line two sheet trays with parchment paper. This recipe should give you around 18 cookies, depending on how large you scoop them.
  • With a medium sized cookie scoop, portion out the cookie dough.
  • Place a piece of dough in the palm of your hand and gently flatten it out. Around 2-2.5. Place 4-5 Mini Marshmallows or half a large marshmallow in the middle of the dough and wrap the dough around it, rolling it into a ball to seal it. It is okay if some of the marshmallows are peaking out as long as its not on the bottom of the dough.
  • Arrange 6 cookies on a parchment lined sheet tray making sure there is plenty of room between the cookies. If you like you can sprinkle each cookie dough ball with additional chocolate chips.
  • Bake at 350F for 10-12 minutes. The cookies are done when the sides appear to be fully set and the center is still underbaked. This is where the marshmallows should have created a puddle.
  • Once they come from the oven, use a round cookie cutter, slightly larger than the cookies and scoot them into a round shape. Because of the marshmallows they look a bit messy.
  • Allow for them to fully cool on the sheet tray.

This cookie is on the delicate side and will break in pieces if still handled when hot.

I Wrapped It In Some Newspaper With Intentions Of Giving Them To Niki

No wonder it was sickly sweet- It had sucralose in it! Im not one to often use it in any of my recipes and as such, could really taste it. Not only that, but it was relatively creamy too, and all I added was water. The addition of non-fat milk powder andother stuff made sense.

I was game to recreate this, but with the least amount of ingredients, and ones which were easy enough to have on hand! The biggest issue I had was whether or not to include a milk powder or alternative. I tried a coconut based milk powder and it really didnt work as part of a mix . What did work was powdered creamer and powdered whole milk, but this leaves my vegan/dairy free friends unable to make it.

To rectify this dilemma, I simply made a sugar free hot chocolate/hot cocoa mix, with the option to add the milk/creamer powder , BUT instead of adding hot water, you add a warmed milk of choice to it!

Now? Nobody misses out!

For those who enjoy a dark, rich chocolate taste, Id recommend using a combination of dark cocoa powder and good quality dutch processed cocoa powder. If you are after a simple cocoa taste, stick to just a good quality cocoa powder. Because of the ingredients used, this healthy homemade sugar free hot cocoa mix is completely paleo, vegan, gluten free, grain free, dairy free and low calorie!

Just saying.

Make this healthy Sugar Free Homemade Hot Chocolate Cocoa Mix using three ingredients and make something to feel good about.

3 Ingredient Dairy-free/Vegan Hot Cocoa Mix Recipe

Hot chocolate can be healthy if prepared in the right way.

Cocoa powder is nutritious, rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins A and K. Plus, it contains antioxidants and flavonoids, which can help to reduce inflammation and boost the immune system.

But remember: all these health benefits are true for pure cocoa powder.

If you add dark chocolate to this recipe, youll get added fats from cocoa butter.

This doesnt mean you cant eat chocolate from time to time. But if you want to drink the healthiest possible hot chocolate, opt for one made with just cocoa powder.

Whats The Difference Between Dutch Processed And Natural Cocoa Powder

The two basic types of cocoa powder are Dutch-process and natural.

Natural cocoa powder is ground cocoa powder in its pure form. It doesnt undergo further processing which leaves the cocoa a light, chalky brown color with a bitter taste to it. Natural cocoa powder is generally paired with baking soda in recipes. Because cocoa beans are naturally quite acidic, baking soda will trigger the chemical reaction that causes lift and lightness in your final bake.

Dutch-process cocoa powder, discovered by a Dutch chocolate maker, on the other hand, is made by soaking cocoa beans in an alkali solution which neutralizes the acidity and cuts a bit of the bitterness. The results in a product that is darker in color and less bitter flavored. It creates what some people consider a richer, fudgier flavor in baked goods.

Natural Cocoa: More acidity = more rise Dutch Processed Cocoa: Less acidity = less rise

Sweet Simple And Dairy Free

Ok, so the greatest thing about this hot chocolate mix is that you can make a jar full and put it on the counter for whenever you want some. I mean, it’s 11:08pm in Minneapolis, everyone is sleeping, and I have just quietly made homemade, real hot chocolate for myself to drink while I watch “Harlots” on Hulu and write up this post.

Now before you think, why the heck are you awake that late? Honey, this is nothing. Keeping up with 2 kids and a full time food blog is a lot of work and I need my simple sweet treats like this real hot cocoa to keep me going at night!

This hot chocolate mix is great because it’s got the right amount of cocoa to still taste great with dairy free milk. A lot of times, the store bought mixes are too watery for me and then taste so weird with something like oat milk, which is what we have on hand in our house. We also love that this is made from real ingredients. No fillers, no thickeners, and no stupid crazy weird ingredients.
