Make Sure The Label Fits Your Dietary Needs

Snyder’s Of Hannover Pretzel Sticks Hot Buffalo Wing Style – Gluten Free Reviews

To ensure that the pretzels youre buying are gluten-free, look for the words gluten-free, no gluten, free of gluten, or without gluten on the packaging. These labels are regulated by the FDA, and mean that the product contains less than 20 parts per million of gluten, which is generally considered to be safe for celiacs.

However, if you have an allergy or intolerance and are sensitive to even trace amounts of gluten, you may need to be more careful. You might also see gluten-free seals from third-party organizations, like the Gluten-Free Certification Organization and the National Sanitation Foundation.

Testing standards for third-party certifications vary, so its best to check their website to determine exactly what each gluten-free seal means. In addition, you can check whether the product is manufactured in a dedicated gluten-free facility to avoid cross-contamination.

Get To Know Your Flour Replacements

Instead of wheat flour, gluten-free pretzels use a variety of alternatives including other grain-based flours and starches. These ingredients have different tastes and textures. Many manufacturers use a blend of flours and starches to get the right consistency.

    Whole Grain Flours Provide Fiber

Grain-based flours include sorghum, rice, and corn flour. Sorghum is an ancient grain thats naturally gluten-free and high in protein, fiber, and iron. It has a slightly sweet flavor and a dense texture, so its often mixed with other lighter gluten-free flours.

Brown rice flour is a whole grain flour thats made from ground-up rice. It has a nutty flavor and is high in protein, fiber, and B vitamins. Corn flour is made from finely ground cornmeal. Because its made from the whole kernel, it has better nutritional values than cornstarch.

Grain-based flours are good gluten-free options. However, not all whole grain flours are 100 percent whole grain. Its imporant to look for the Whole Grain Council seal to know if the product is fully grain-based.

    Starches Add Texture

Many gluten-free pretzels include some type of starch, which helps bind ingredients together and creates chew and elasticity in the finished product. Common starches include tapioca, corn, and potato, all of which have a neutral flavor. Compared to flours, starches tend to be higher in carbohydrates and lower in protein and fiber.

    Snyders Flavored Pretzel Pieces

There are nine varieties of Snyders Flavored Pretzel Pieces: Parmesan Garlic, Hot Buffalo Wing, Peanut Butter Filled, Salted Caramel, Cinnamon Sugar, Honey Mustard, and Onion, Cheddar Cheese, Jalapeno, and Buttermilk Ranch.

Looking at the flavor options, it doesnt surprise us much that five of the nine are not considered vegan as they contain animal-derived ingredients. Parmesan Garlic, Salted Caramel, Honey Mustard and Onion, Cheddar Cheese, and Buttermilk Ranch are all non-vegan.

The four flavors that are left are all vegan-friendly due to the lack of animal products within the ingredients list. These are as follows:

    • Hot Buffalo Wing
    • Jalapeno

    Are Pretzels Gluten

There’s no one way to make pretzels you’ll often find many brands, flavors and varieties at your local supermarket. For pretzel lovers, this is fabulous news , but for those following a gluten-free diet, this makes snack shopping more difficult.

For the most part, pretzels are made with wheat flour, which means they contain gluten in the recipe. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley and these grains’ derivatives, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation.

You may want to be extra cautious of any dips you buy, too. There’s no shortage of flavors out there and different companies and recipes may include gluten-based ingredients.

But if you’re buying your own pretzels at a store, you can keep an eye out for some gluten-free brands .

    How To Make Gluten

These are the two ingredients needed for these yummy icing covered gluten-free pretzels. A bag of Snyders of Hanover Gluten-Free Pretzel Rods and a can of Pillsbury Funfetti Vanilla Icing.

Put all of the icing into a medium-sized pan and place on low heat. Stir frequently as the icing melts and this takes just a few minutes. Once its all soft and melted remove from the heat.

Place a large piece of parchment paper on the counter and then start dipping the pretzel rods into the icing. Use a spatula to help spread the icing while twirling the pretzel. Cover around 3/4ths of the pretzel with icing. Place on the parchment paper and then immediately sprinkle with the sprinkles. Repeat for each pretzel. Let them sit for 15 minutes or so to let the icing set.

These are best served the same day as making them. But leftovers are okay too, theyre just best the same day. Cover any leftover with plastic wrap or place in a plastic baggie.

Once these are made and the icing has set you can serve them standing up in little glass jars or on a platter. Either way, they look very festive.

    Who This List Is For

Snyder’s of Hanover: Gluten Free Honey Mustard & Onion and Hot Buffalo Wing Review

This list of 8 brands of the best gluten free pretzel brands is made up of products available primarily to United States residents. The prices and other details referred to are for the products available the U.S., since that is where I live and spend money.

I am actually able to find all but one of these brands in a local brick-and-mortar grocery or natural foods store near me. But I live in a major metropolitan area. All but the ALDI brand, Live GFree, are available from Amazon.com. I didnt include anything that was just too difficult to source in the U.S.

    Should You Eat Pretzels

Well, these snacks are considered junk food, so theyre not the healthiest choice out there. Many people assume that the lower the fats, the healthier a food is. And since pretzels contain an almost nonexistent quantity of fats, they should be as healthy as a snack can be.

Unfortunately, thats not the case. They are great for calorie-conscious individuals because of their low-calorie content. But thats about it for the benefits of pretzels. Otherwise, they have high amounts of refined carbohydrates and sodium. Plus, they offer no nutritional value to your body.

It isnt to say that you should go on a complete pretzel ban. Eating pretzels occasionally wont cause excessive harm to your body and may satisfy those snack cravings. But, in saying that, you shouldnt add them to your daily diet.

Besides the necessity for gluten-free pretzels for gluten intolerant individuals, choose healthier pretzel brands. For instance, whole-grain pretzels, unlike refined flour pretzels, are better for your body.

Similarly, you can reduce the excessive sodium intake from pretzels by eating the unsalted type. You can always make a healthy, homemade version to munch on them occasionally.

Whats Next In Gluten Free Product Reviews

You know you can trust my reviews to be honest. I did only share those pretzels that I really love, since I dont want to trash any companies. But I also told you their weak points, so you can decide for yourself.

Im thinking about doing gluten free crackers for my next product review. Ive started to accumulate some, but its very hit or miss. Better I waste my money than you waste yours, though!

    How To Find Gluten

Even if the pretzels you’re buying contain no gluten ingredients, they may still be at risk for cross-contamination, which occurs when gluten foods come in contact with other ingredients either through manufacturing or preparation, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation.

You can avoid cross-contact by choosing your bag carefully. To play it safe, avoid pretzels at a party or restaurant, unless you can be certain they’re gluten-free.

At the grocery store, read the ingredient list of any package you decide to buy. Look out for any gluten-based foods and check the allergen listing for wheat or gluten, too.

If the ingredients are gluten-free-approved, find a “Gluten-Free” label on the front package of the product. This label is regulated by the Food & Drug Administration and signifies that the food you’re eating has less than 20 parts per million of gluten, which is generally safe for people with celiac disease to eat.

If you want even more security, buy pretzels that are labeled “Certified Gluten-Free” and are assessed by qualified third parties, such as the Gluten-Free Certification Organization . The GFCO has especially strict standards, certifying foods that have only 10 ppm of gluten or less, according to the organization’s website.

Spice Things Up With Flavored Pretzels

    Snyder

Filled pretzels arent the only option if you want extra flavor. If you tend to crave savory foods, you can find gluten-free pretzels with flavors like mustard, onion, and hot sauce. If your tastes tend more towards the sweet side of things, look for chocolate or yogurt-covered pretzels.

Flavors are a great way to add spice to a pretzel. However, you should take care as some flavors can add sodium and sugar.

I recommend pretzels that are seasoned with herbs if youre aiming for a low-sodium diet. They can add a lot of punch to a pretzel without the added salt or sodium or even sugar.

Choose Between Hard Or Soft Pretzels

Hard and soft pretzels are two very different things, so make sure you know which one youre craving. If youre shopping online, hard pretzels are much easier to come by since they have a longer shelf-life.

Soft pretzels will usually come frozen and need to be heated before serving. Youre more likely to find gluten-free soft pretzels at smaller specialty stores and bakeries. You can also find gluten-free soft pretzel baking mixes, which you can keep in your pantry and make whenever a craving hits.

Pick A Pretzel Shape For Your Snacking Style

In addition to the classic twist, gluten-free pretzels come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Sticks are a fun alternative that are great for easy snacking. If you want something a little more sturdy, look for pretzel rods, which are thicker than sticks and can be eaten plain or with cheese or dips.

Pretzel thins are flat like chips. Eat them with hummus as a gluten-free alternative to pita chips. And dont forget about filled pretzels! These little pretzel bites are filled with things like peanut butter and chocolate for a flavorful snack all in one.

Quite a few of these also offer gluten-containing options, so please be sure to always check the label before purchasing. Which Im sure is something were all used to doing anyway!
