The Best Tasting Gluten

My daughter has a gluten sensitivity. She can eat a little wheat and be okay, but if she has it too often, she gets stomach aches and feels crummy. Unfortunatelyher favorite foods are pasta, mac and cheese, and bagels! Uh oh!

And on top of wanting to eat all carbs all the time, she also is very picky. You cant just make any old substitution and expect her to eat it. She wont take, isnt this good enough? as an argument. Needless to say, this has resulted in years of trial and error, not to mention stress on her poor mama.

I have worked to create recipes that please her, and you will find lots of those on my website. For example, I have perfected gluten-free banana muffins and gluten-free chocolate chip cookies. There will definitely be more of those to come! But sometimes a mama needs a break from cooking, or needs some gluten-free products to round out a meal. Today I want to share with you the best tasting gluten-free store-bought products we have found.

So here is what made the cut now without further ado, our list of the best tasting gluten-free products out there!

A Trader Joes Gluten Free Bread Worth Buying

The Best Homemade Gluten

Please welcome Trader Joes to our roundup of the best gluten free breads. Their gluten free Italian bread earned them a spot!

When all TJs sold was their gluten free white sandwich bread, I didnt include it in this best-of gluten free bread list. All 3 of my children agreed that it just was not very good.

The loaves were so tiny that it was actually quite expensive in the end. But theyve since come out with a sliced gluten free Italian bread that is really good. So its included as a bonus entry.

I count 12 generous slices in a loaf, each of which is the size and shape of what I remember sandwich bread to be. The slices have a tender interior thats soft without being gummy at all.

It toasts well, too. And the end pieces are full-sized, which is why I counted them among the 12 slices.

Here are the other details:

  • Size of loaf: 15.2 ounces
  • Price you should expect to pay:
  • Fresh or frozen: Fresh
  • Availability: Good, if you have a Trader Joes near you.
  • Other common allergens: eggs
  • Ingredients: water, starch and flour blend , yeast, cornstarch, cane sugar, canola oil, whole grain sorghum flour, dried egg whites, psyllium husk powder, salt, invert sugar syrup, cultured brown rice , brown rice, vegetable glycerin, deactivated yeast

Buying Guide For Best Gluten

People follow a gluten-free diet for a number of reasons. Some follow it because they dont like the taste of wheat or want to limit their intake of carbs, while others suffer from gluten intolerances or sensitivities. Gluten-free bread used to have the reputation of being flavourless, but today there are bountiful options when it comes to bread. Gone are the days of crumbly or cardboard-like gluten-free bread. Thanks to the many types of flour available on the market, there is plenty of variety in gluten-free bread, all of them made with unconventional ingredients that help mimic traditional bread.

When buying gluten-free bread, carefully read the ingredients list and, if possible, steer clear of any that have lots of preservatives and artificial sweeteners. You can buy gluten-free bread pre-baked or in a mix if you want to experiment with baking your own at home. If you suspect that products with gluten are causing issues for you, consult a doctor before going on a gluten-free diet.

St Rise: Bulk Fermentation

For the bulk fermentation, place the dough into a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp tea towel and let the dough to rise for 1 hour in a warm place. It will approximately double in volume.

Good Gluten Free Bread

Lets use a score card with criteria to figure out what is good gluten free bread. Like I said, the texture and taste of the bread are super important. Texture will get a good score if it is fluffy bread. For size, if it is super tiny than it will get a lower score. Price is tricky, because every budget is different, and we really cannot compare it to the gluten filled bread prices. The price score will have to be based on the comparable gluten free breads. Taste will get a low score if it is dry with no flavour.

Criteria: Texture, size of slice of bread, price and taste

Scoring: 1 is the lowest possible score and 5 is the highest possible score.

Here Is A Video To Make It Easy For You

I love crust, so Im not really complaining. Im that person who takes the inside of the bread out and mostly eats the crusty outside.

I tried a couple ways to solve the problem, and finally ordered this this French bread baking pan,. I played a little more with my recipe. I decided to do four smaller loaves instead of two larger loaves. this was a good call, because they also make great sandwich loaves and you can freeze them easily.

This pan is perforated and is the very best way to bake this bread. It will not stick. You dont need spray or corn meal. You will need to spread the loaves out with an offset spatula but not all the way to the end.

You are supposed to use a bread lame to score the bread. I use my sharpest boning knife, and cut from beginning to end, wiping off the dough/batter each time. Since this is a very batter type dough, its not easy. The scoring lets out steam and the bread has less risk of being gooey, often a problem with gluten free bread.

Ive made this gluten free French Bread at least ten times now, testing various ingredients including non-fat dry milk, golden flax meal, and psillium husk, ingredients Ive used in this gluten free artisan bread. The bread that tested best for flavor and texture was the bread with the non-fat dry milk and golden flax.

What Is Psyllium Husk And What Is Its Role In Gluten Free Bread

This is probably the only unfamiliar ingredient in the list above but one that is absolutely crucial if you want to bake proper gluten free bread.

And before you ask: there is no substitute for psyllium husk.

Psyllium husk is available in two forms: as the rough husk or as a fine powder. This recipe uses the rough husk, which has the following appearance:

When its mixed with water, psyllium husk forms a gel and this is what acts as the gluten substitute, both in the dough and in the baked loaf.

Before baking, the psyllium gel helps to create a dough that can be kneaded and shaped . It also gives the dough enough elasticity so that it can trap the gas produced through the yeast action and expand during the bulk fermentation and the final proof.

In the final baked loaf, psyllium is responsible for the characteristic elasticity and flexibility of the bread, as well as its amazing chewy texture with an open crumb.

Storage Tips & Suggestions

Buy Schar Gluten Free White Bread

My #1 tip for gluten-free bread is to soften it in the microwave for 5-10 seconds! Most breads are kept frozen anyway, but they all tend to harden over time. Do yourself a favor and pop it in the microwave for a few seconds, as it makes a big difference. Also, I usually keep gluten-free bread in the freezer or refrigerator to maintain freshness as long as possible.

A Note On Measurements

While Ive included the volume measurements in the recipe card below, if at all possible : USE METRIC GRAM MEASUREMENTS IF YOU CAN.

Theyre much more precise and produce more reliably delicious results. This is true for pretty much all of baking a kitchen scale will invariably give better results than cups and tablespoons.

    Is It Really Gluten Free

This is a question that many gluten intolerant people ask themselves, and the only way to know the answer is if you check to see that the manufacturer is certified.

If manufacturers havent obtained the actual certification from the Gluten Free Certification Group, then you should probably avoid the product.

Some may write gluten free on the label, but it could just be a marketing ploy and youd rather be safe than sorry.

Here are some of the official logos you should see on brands that have obtained the certification:

All of the brands we included have a certification, and we know this because we double-checked on each manufacturers individual website!
