The two main types of tortillas that youll feel good adding to your gluten-free diet are: corn tortillas and any tortillas that are labeled as gluten-free.

Gluten-free tortillas are those that are made using a gluten-free flour blend, where all of the grains that are used are gluten free. This also means that these tortillas are made in a dedicated gluten-free facility ensuring that they are safe for your gluten-free diet.

Either way, store the tortillas in some sort of closed container. I have an actual tortilla warmer because I make them often, and it was really inexpensive.

You can simply store the tortillas wrapped tightly in a moist tea towel , in a pot with a tight-fitting lid, or even in a wide, flat plastic storage container with a lid.

They’ll remain pliable and fresh-tasting for a few hours when stored at room temperature, wrapped in a damp tea towel or paper towel. They can be refreshed before eating by searing briefly on both sides in a hot skillet. They can also be cooled completely in a stack, then wrapped tightly in a freezer-safe wrap and frozen, then refreshed in the same way.

After reviewing brands of gluten free bread and later brands of gluten free pasta, I asked those of you on my email list what I should review nextand for some of your favorite brands. Many, many of you responded and the general consensus was to review packaged gluten free tortillas.

My goal in all of these product reviews is plain and simple: to help you spend your hard-earned money wisely. Reviews on sites like amazon.com are great, but it’s often hard to judge the perspective of the reviewerespecially when it comes to gluten free products.

This is my list of the best gluten free tortillas brands from my experience, and your recommendations . If you have something else on your best-of list, please let us know in the comments below! Mission Gluten Free Flour Tortillas

Overall, these Mission brand are the best gluten free tortillas and my overall favorite for a number of reasons. They’re relatively well-priced , are very flexible, widely available and have a mostly neutral flavor.

They do taste like potato , so my youngest child does not care for these tortillas. But all three of my children are snobbish about packaged foods. They’d prefer that I make my own gluten free tortillas every. single. time.

  • Size of package: 10.5 ounces
  • Price you should expect to pay: About $5
  • Fresh or frozen: Fresh
  • Availability: Very good. My local grocery store , Target stores, Walmart stores
  • Other common allergens: soy
  • Ingredients: tortilla blend , water, vegetable shortening , pea protein, resistant corn starch, contains 2% or less of: sugar, inulin, baking soda, sodium acid pyrophosphate, monoglycerides, fumaric acid, enzymes, and calcium propionate, sorbic acid and citric acid
  • Shelf life/storage: The package recommends refrigerating after opening, and the package has a stamped freshness date. They’re not refrigerated in store. I refrigerate them immediately and find that they are still good at least a few days after the freshness date.

Corn Tortilla Vs Flour Tortilla: Whats Better

Corn tortillas are much healthier than flour tortillas. Corn tortillas have fewer calories, fewer carbs, and due to the cooking process, have many more nutrients than flour tortillas.

Reviewing and cooking with Mission gluten-free tortillas

Of the four corn tortillas on this list in the first, super-flexible category discussed above, my favorite brand is Guerrero white corn tortillas. They’re thin and super soft and flexible right out of the package.

Guerrero white corn tortillas have absolutely no aftertaste and are probably the most flexible of this first category. They’re also really inexpensive and widely available. They also have fewer ingredients than others in this mass-produced category.

  • Price you should expect to pay: About $2.30 for 30 tortillas.
  • Shelf-stable, refrigerate after opening.
  • Availability: Very good. My local grocery stores carry Guerrero corn tortillas.
  • Ingredients: corn masa flour, water, contains 2% or less of: cellulose gum, guar gum, amylase, and propionic acid, benzoic acid and phosphoric acid .

Rudi’s Gluten Free Bakery Plain Tortillas

Rudi’s gluten free flour tortillas are really good and don’t have that potato taste like Mission. They’re a bit more expensive than the Mission brand, though. Plus they’re harder to find, and only seem to be available frozen.

They keep for quite a while as frozen, though, are flexible and taste very neutral. They probably have the most conventional flour tortilla taste of all of the brands on this list.

  • Price you should expect to pay: about $6.00
  • Fresh or frozen: Frozen
  • Availability: Fair. My local grocery store , my local natural foods store. They used to be more widely available.
  • Other common allergens: none
  • Ingredients: whole grain flours , corn starch, tapioca flour, rice flour, water, canola oil, xanthan gum, cane sugar, organic maltodextrin and organic cultured dextrose, organic apple cider vinegar, guar gum, sea salt, baking powder , malic acid, yeast
  • Shelf life/storage: The package recommends storing the tortillas in the freezer or refrigerator, and indicates that the package can be stored on the counter for up to 10 days. The package does have a freshness date, though, so I’m not sure if that 10-day rule is always applicable.

Do Corn Tortillas Need To Be Refrigerated

Corn tortillas do not need to be put in your fridge, but most will suggest keeping them in a fridge once open. This is because it will keep them much fresher. And theyll last much longer in a refrigerator than they would in the pantry or a cupboard. To preserve the quality of corn keep them in the fridge if you can.

    The Best Tortilla Press

    This tortilla press has a story behind it. Debbie and I were in a restaurant in Puerto Vallarta and we saw a woman making tortillas in a big huge wooden press. They came out perfect!

    We searched high and low for a wooden tortilla press in Puerto Vallarta and eventually on the last day, Debbie and Mark found one! We were pretty surprised how hard it was to find.

    I have tried those aluminum tortilla presses that are easy to find and for some reason they just dont work. Maybe I havent tried the right one, but anyways

    This tortilla press rocks!

    We realize that it might be tough for you to get to Mexico to get one for yourself, but we found a very similar wooden tortilla press on Amazon and it looks like it works just the same. We recommend getting one if you like to make homemade tortillas in your house.

    La Banderita Corn Tortillas

    La Banderita corn tortillas are absolutely the softest packaged corn tortillas I’ve ever seen . I honestly don’t think you really need to heat them at all before eating them unless you want to heat whatever you’re putting inside of them.

    They do have a slightly unpleasant aftertaste, though. They’re my 4th choice of any tortillas in this category for that reason. But it’s truly amazing how pillow-soft they are!

    If you’re strictly gluten free , you might hesitate before purchasing La Banderita corn tortillas. The package states that they are made in a facility that also processes wheat . We haven’t ever had a problem with them, but please make the choice that is best for your family.

    Here are the other details:

    • Size of tortilla and package: 5-inch diameter tortillas, various package sizes
    • Price you should expect to pay: $3.30 for 20.
    • Shelf-stable when unopened, but only closes with a twist-tie. Refrigerate after opening.
    • Availability: Good. In my local area, La Banderita used to be more widely available, much like Guerrero. Lately, they’ve become a bit harder to find.
    • Ingredients: whole grain corn, water, gums, preservatives , lime.
    • Heating instructions: warm one tortilla at a time in a pre-heated skillet.

    The Real Coconut: Coconut Flour Tortillas

    As I mentioned earlier, some of the Paleo tortillas that I tried were nearly inedible. The Real Coconut brand coconut flour tortillas are excellent. They do taste like coconut, so if you don’t care for coconut at all, you’ll want to avoid these.

    But somehow this brand is able to do with a tortilla what Siete haven’t done: make a flexible, good-tasting wrap out of coconut flour. The price is actually quite good but is likely higher if you buy it at Whole Foods since, well, it’s Whole Foods.

    • Size of package: 7.6 ounces
    • Price you should expect to pay: $4.99
    • Fresh or frozen: Frozen
    • Availability: Fair. Amazon.com doesn’t carry these tortillas, but Netrition.com does and I’ve found them in Whole Foods markets
    • Ingredients: coconut flour, cassava starch, water, contains 2% or less of: sea salt, coconut oil, xanthan gum
    • Shelf life/storage: The package recommends keeping the tortillas refrigerated, and says they’re suitable for freezing.

    La Banderita Corn Tortillas – Gluten Free Reviews

    This company also is gluten-free certified by the GFCO and labels all of its tortilla chipsincluding the multi-grain varietiesas certified gluten-free. Late July’s tortilla chips are also organic and come in a variety of flavors, including Sea Salt, Jalapeño Lime, Nacho Cheese, Mexican Street Corn, and Garden Ranch.

    Why Are Conventional Tortillas Unhealthy

    Conventional tortillas are made from white flour or corn flour. I typically choose not to use these ingredients in my cooking for a few reasons. For one thing, most white flours are bleached, contain gluten and are hard on your digestive system. For this reason, I like to choose from the number of healthy gluten-free flours that are available, like coconut flour, which I use in this Paleo tortilla recipe.

    I also stay away from most products made with corn. Although the nutritional value of corn thats unprocessed, organic and non-GMO isnt necessary bad for you and has been eaten for thousands of years, the types of corn used to make foods today are so overly modified that it negates its health benefits. Its unfortunate that most corn and corn products that we eat today are genetically modified and go through so much processing that theyre barely recognizable.

    Besides using coconut flour in my paleo tortillas recipe, I use arrowroot starch, a gluten-free, GMO-free and healthier alternative to cornstarch. Arrowroot starch is also beneficial for sensitive digestive systems, as its one of the easiest starches for the body to digest.

    Which Tortilla Brands Are Gluten

    If youre gluten-free, you might be wondering which tortillas are safe to consume since many brands are available on the market. Heres a list of some of the most well-known gluten-free corn tortillas.

    • If you cant find any of these brands at your local grocery store, you can always check the label to make sure that the tortillas are made with 100% corn flour and dont contain any wheat or gluten-containing ingredients.

    Kettle Brand Tortilla Chips

    Kettle is certified gluten-free by the GFCO, which means that its facilities are inspected to adhere to gluten-free standards. Some of Kettle Brand’s products do contain trace amounts of dairy, however. The company states that it thoroughly cleans its lines after each flavor run, but there is still potential for cross contamination.
