Texture.

Just like in food, gluten-based additives are used as binders, for additional moisture and to beef up the nutrition. Wheat ingredients are cheap and easy to come by. Some of them have actually been found to be good for skin.Well. Good for most people.

How To Avoid Gluten In Beauty Products

Gluten derived ingredients such as oils from wheat, rye, malt, oats and barley are often found in natural skin care and cosmetics as binders and emollients to help mix ingredients together. One of the most common Gluten-derived ingredients found in beauty products is actually Vitamin E, which can be derived from gluten sources like Wheat Germ Oil as well as non-Gluten sources.4 Some products may not outline the source of the Vitamin E in their ingredients list, making it important to double check with the supplier or manufacturer, or look for Certification. Other ingredients to look out for include Tocopherol , Wheat Germ Oil , Hydrolyzed wheat protein, Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, Avena sativa , and Triticum aestivum .

What Brands Of Makeup Are Gluten

15 Best Gluten

I have classified the products in this article into 3 categories:

1. Gluten-free Certified

Its a process to ensure that a given food, drink, or supplement isnt unsafe for people with celiac disease. Consumers are reassured that there is third-party oversight of the manufacturers claims and processes. Several programs give out this certification, and each has its own criteria to ensure safety for consumers.

Products in this category offer most of their line as gluten-free certified and label them appropriately. The other products are advertised as gluten-free.

2. Products advertised as Gluten-free

These are products that are manufactured without any gluten ingredients, and even if there is wheat in the food, usually as a result of cross-contamination, it can still be labeled as free of protein. As long as the product contains less than 20 parts per million of gluten, it may be labeled free of it.

If you are interested in learning more about what it means to be gluten-free, certified or not, you can read more in this great article by EatMikeys.com.

3. Dont test for Gluten

These are brands that may or may not use gluten as part of their ingredients, and if you use them, you are at risk. The companies dont test for gluten and dont make any explicit statements in their labels regarding gluten. If you do decide to use these, make sure you take precaution:

Udi’s Gf Three Cheese Pizza

Per ½ pizza : 360 calories, 15 g fat , 570 mg sodium, 45 g carbs , 12 g protein

Eat This: Pick up this gluten-free standard, made with brown rice flour and a blend of mozzarella, fontina, and romano cheeses, from the freezer section. If you’re not concerned with blood-pressure and see a brand known as Smart Flour, we’d also recommend their pick, but it’s a little higher in sodium.

Why Is It Important For Me To Avoid Cosmetics That Aren’t Gluten Free

Over time, you swallow a lot of lipstick, lip gloss, lip balm and even nail varnish if you’re a nail biter. Eventually, your body will start to react to the amount of cosmetics you’ve ingested, leading to intestinal problems. Going gluten free helps balance your health and prevent any problems arising.

How Do I Find Gluten In Beauty Products

Reading skin care labels to locate gluten-containing ingredients is beyond difficult. There are just so many complicated ingredient names that are derived from gluten containing grains.

Some of the more common ingredients used in manufacturing skin care that contain gluten are:

  • Hydrolyzed malt extract,
  • Secale cereale seed flour,
  • Triticum vulgare gluten ,
  • and many, many, more!

Beyond directly containing gluten as ingredients, many skin care products are produced on machinery that also processes gluten!

With the difficulty that comes with understanding whether there is gluten in beauty products, it is MUCH easier to stick with brands who intentionally create their items to be gluten-free. Many of these companies even go the extra step to manufacture certified gluten-free skin care.

What Are The Risk Factors

FOTD, Gluten free cosmetics

For the most part, the risk is low. The molecular structure of the gluten used in beauty products, generally cannot penetrate the skin. So, if you are applying a product onto your skin, and nowhere near your eyes or mouth, and you wash your hands right after, you will most likely not have a reaction. I say most likely because the chance still exists depending on your level of sensitivity.

Unfortunately, when it comes to applying beauty products, we tend to get our hands involved so its very possible you will touch your eyes or mouth before washing the product off.

There is also the direct risk of ingesting lip products that contain added gluten. Thats a more obvious one.

Another risk factor lies in powders that contain added gluten. You can either breathe them in or they can get in your eyes or mouth.

Now, again, for the most part, the risk is low, but its real and its there and it depends on your personal sensitivity level.

Is Maybelline New York Gluten

The cosmetics company Maybelline does have products that dont include gluten ingredients but are not advertised as gluten-free and are not gluten-free certified either. The facilities that make their products that dont contain gluten also make products that do contain gluten. This can result in cross-contamination. They also claim to use FDA-recognized names in their ingredients list. A quick review of the ingredients should let you know if there are any gluten ingredients in their products.

I personally stay away from any brands that have any chance of including a drop of gluten, but the amount of gluten in a cross-contaminated product might not be a problem for you. It will depend on your condition. My suggestion with Maybelline is, if you want to use one of their products, always contact them first and ask whether you are looking to buy any gluten ingredients in it.

Always consult with your doctor if you have any questions.

Who Should Use Gluten

10 Best Gluten Free Shampoos In 2022

If you have celiac disease, its a good idea to double-check that your favorite lip products are gluten-free. I had to toss most of my go-to lip balms and lipsticks after my diagnosis and have spent the last couple of years rebuilding my collection with gluten-free alternatives.

Other than lip products, you dont have to switch the rest of your beauty routine if you have celiac disease. However, if it brings you peace of mind to only use gluten-free products, then thats certainly a valid choice.

Now, its worth noting that there are some people who may experience a skin reaction when applying gluten topically. This could mean you have an allergy to wheat or another ingredient derived from gluten. For example, the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology notes that people who are allergic to wheat could have an allergic reaction from cosmetics containing gluten.

The bottom line: People with celiac disease need not use gluten-free beauty products since gluten cant penetrate the skin, says Bill Bradley, RD, CEO at Mediterranean Living. However, if a person has allergic skin reactions to gluten, its recommended to use gluten-free beauty products.

Reviewed and edited by a celiac disease expert.

Celiac.com 10/02/2008 – Anyone with confirmed gluten sensitivity knows what a web of conflicting research and medical opinions he or she must wade through in order to get diagnosed. Sadly, it is a rare thing for a patient to have to consult less than a handful of doctors, and consider many various ailments before hearing the life-altering statement: You have celiac disease.

So then it should be of no surprise that once the diagnosis has been made, there is still much debate over what this means to an individual. A celiac disease diagnosis means the lifetime avoidance of anything that contains gluten contained in wheat, barley and rye and their derivativesand even this simple statement is not always agreed upon by experts.

Celiac.com Sponsor :The consensus is that people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance must avoid the proteins found in wheat, barley and rye for the rest of their lives. But still, there is the occasional “expert” who seems to think that this problem could go awaythat it can be cured. Of course, this idea seems completely off base to most, but to the patient of a doctor who has guided that individual into the gluten-free light, it just may seem to make sense.

Hidden Wheat Barley And Oatmeal Ingredient Names

I have noticed that makeup manufacturers will sometimes list ingredients using different names and aliases. You will not always find the common names listed, such as wheat, rye, barley, and oat. The cosmetic industry will often instead use scientific names, which are harder to spot as gluten for the consumer.

Most cosmetics companies use either a shared facility or get many raw materials from many different suppliers and sources. This raises the risk of cross-contamination and also makes it difficult for these companies to guarantee a gluten-free process used by their suppliers.

Here are a few of the most common scientific names used:

  • Triticum Vulgare

Check out this fantastic article written by GlutenFreeMakeupGal.com, which contains a handy chart with all the possible hidden ingredients makeup companies use.

My big advice is always to read the labels if it is not Gluten-free Certified, lookout for gluten or equivalent hidden scientific names. It will be the only way you can 100% make sure you are safe from gluten.

What Beauty Brands Should Do Better

Best Gluten

From our research, we feel that brands hold back from making any definitive statement because they cant guarantee the condition of the raw product and/or the chance of cross-contamination if products are produced in a shared facility. We get their hesitation, but we are past that now. As gluten-free foodees, we understand ingredients and that there is a risk whenever a label includes the words contains vs may contain.

Improve transparency. Take the onus off the customer to investigate. Just as they promote their vegan and/or cruelty-free status, do the same with gluten and its time we demand it. Email or call beauty retailers and/or brands and tell them that gluten is a common allergen and there needs to be more transparency when it is present in products. They should include gluten-free in search filters on their site along with other allergens/preferences, so identifying gluten-free products is easier.
