Follow Your Heart Gives Mac And Cheese A Dairy

Gluten Free Condiments

Best known for its dairy-free Vegenaise, cheeses, dressings, yogurt and sour cream, Follow Your Heart has entered a new category with the launch of SuperMac boxed macaroni and cheese.

The Danone brand is applying its real good, real fast ethos to the meal kits, which pair noodles with a pouch of dairy-free sauce made from organic vegetables, beans and cashews. Follow Your Heart developed SuperMac with sisters Heather Goldberg and Jenny Engel, the founders of Spork Foods, a site offering vegan recipes and cooking tutorials.

The two varieties are Cheezy Carrot, with a sauce made from carrots, navy beans and butternut squash and Creamy Caulifredo, featuring cauliflower, navy beans and cashew butter. SuperMac is dairy, egg, soy and peanut-free, with no preservatives, according to the company. The mac and cheese will be sold exclusively at Whole Foods Market until the end of 2022 for a suggested retail price of $5.99 per 8.1-ounce box.

“While we have a long history in the refrigerated section, we’re always looking for exciting ways to expand the universe of healthy, plant-based solutions no matter where they’re found in the store,” Follow Your Heart Co-founder and CEO Bob Goldberg said in a statement.

At A Restaurant Or When Ordering Takeout

Cross-contamination is a risk you’ll want to consider when you order a side of ketchup at any restaurant . When food is being prepared, flour can get into the air and settle on surfaces in the kitchen, your little cup of ketchup included, according to the National Celiac Association.

That’s why it’s probably best to ask for individual ketchup packets. Or, if your restaurant doesn’t have any, politely request the bottle and pour it directly on your food. That also helps prevent the risk of ketchup being poured into cups or containers that previously held other potentially gluten-containing foods.

Kraft Heinz Creates Spacey New Ketchup

Heinz’s new ketchup really is out of this world.

The condiment brand has created its first bottle of Heinz Tomato Ketchup Marz Edition, made with tomatoes grown on Earth under soil, temperature and water conditions that are similar to those found on Mars.

The ketchup was developed by Kraft Heinz along with a 14-person astrobiology team during a nine-month period at the Aldrin Space Institute at Florida Tech. Two years prior, Heinz had worked with its tomato experts to analyze difficult soil conditions, pick the perfect seeds and implement the right agricultural techniques for the project. The Aldrin Space Institute team then used Heinz’s proprietary tomato seeds to simulate growing tomatoes on Mars.

“Most efforts around discovering ways to grow in Martian-simulated conditions are short term plant growth studies. What this project has done is look at long-term food harvesting, Andrew Palmer with the Aldrin Space Institute said in a statement. Working with the tomato masters at Heinz has allowed us to see what the possibilities are for long term food production beyond Earth.

A Heinz representative told Food Dive the company has “no plans to sell Heinz Tomato Ketchup Marz Edition” to the public but didnt rule it out as a possibility in the future. That said, consumers can still get their hands on other products with out-of-this galaxy connections.

Heinz Ketchup...look out for the small

Widely used as a condiment, the tomato ketchup originally contained ingredients such as egg whites, grapes, mushrooms, oysters, mussels, or walnuts.

However, nowadays the term usually refers to a sweet and tangy sauce that contains tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, as well as different seasonings and spices. Though flavours and spices vary, the most common are onions, coriander, cloves, allspice, cumin, mustard, and garlic.

Heinz is, by far, the leading tomato ketchup manufacturer, selling over 650 million bottles each year all over the world. But are their products gluten-free?

Advisory Regarding Accuracy & Test Repetition

There is a small chance that individual test results shown on “Is It Truly Gluten Free?” may not be accurate. This is due to the fact that gluten test kits themselves are not 100% accurate. Indeed, there is no test that can guarantee completely error-free results. It is also possible that the procedures used for testing may inadvertently introduce factors that could contribute to an inaccurate result. Therefore, while the majority of tests should be accurate, there may be some that are not.

Due to this possibility, you should not assume that an individual test result is accurate. Instead, you should take into consideration the results of all tests that have been performed on a particular product. The percentage graphs shown on the product pages represent exactly that: the combined results of all tests. Also, keep in mind that the more tests that have been performed for a product, the more accurate the combined percentage result will be.

These results should not be used by themselves to determine whether a food product is safe for consumption. These results simply represent another piece of information to help you make your own informed decision. You should consider other factors such as whether a product has been certified gluten-free, or if it is labeled gluten-free. You should also be sure to consult the ingredient label. The test results shown here are not intended to be a substitute for these other indicators, or a replacement for due diligence on your part.

How To Make Sure Your Ketchup Is Gluten

Whether you have celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or are avoiding gluten for other reasons, the best way to ensure youre buying gluten-free ketchup is to choose one thats labeled gluten-free, no gluten, free of gluten, or without gluten.

According to the Food and Drug Administration , any foods with these labels must contain fewer than 20 parts per million of gluten an amount considered safe and well tolerated by people who cant digest gluten (

Sauces Which Are *sometimes* Gluten Free

These sauces are always worth checking – sometimes they will contain gluten but some varieties and brands are gluten free.

I can definitely recommend the Coeliac UK scanner app if you want to check before you buy.

Sauces and condiments which are usually gluten free in the UK are:

  • Tomato Ketchup
  • Some brands of Brown Sauce
  • Some varieties of BBQ sauce
  • Salad dressings
  • Supermarket own brand Yeast Extract – while Marmite is not gluten free, a lot of the own brand ones are. Double check using the scanner app.
  • Relishes and pickles – always double check using the scanner app
  • Tartare sauce – some versions have wheat flour in but some are gluten free

When it comes to tomato ketchup, you’ll be pleased to know Heinz ketchup is gluten free!

In fact, at the time of writing, the Coeliac UK scanner app lists 222 varieties which are gluten free, so that is definitely a bonus for all your ketchup fans!

If you like BBQ sauce, you’ll be pleased to know there are quite a few you can eat.

The HP BBQ sauce is gluten free, and there are quite a few BBQ sauce bottles, marinades and jar sauces which are listed in the Coeliac UK app.

With salad dressings, the majority are gluten free but it’s important to double check the ingredients as there are so many different varieties.

One for the fans out there – the bad news is that Marmite is not gluten free.

However, many of the supermarket own brand Yeast Extracts are gluten free and safe for people with coeliac disease to eat.

What About Gluten Free Gravy

Gluten free gravy is a whole different subject and more-and-more gravies are becoming safe for people with coeliac disease.

I highly recommend checking out my Guide to Gluten Free Gravy and Stock Cubes where I’ve listed all the products which are gluten free.

Of course I will work to keep both these guides up-to-date, so it’s worth bookmarking and checking back.

And please do let me know in the comments if there are any sauces you’re confused about and I’ll do my best to help!

These Brands Of Ketchup Go The Extra Mile To Make Sure Their Products Are Labeled Gluten

Caption:

Celiac.com 11/11/2020 – Most ketchups are made with naturally gluten-free ingredients. However, many brands do not label their ketchup as gluten-free. That’s not necessarily a big deal, but some people like to play it safe. These brands of ketchup go the extra mile to make sure their products are labeled “Gluten-Free.” That means that you can breath extra easy about serving them to people with celiac disease.

What You Need To Look Out For

Is Heinz Ketchup Gluten Free?
  • The main preservative in ketchup is vinegar. While most distilled vinegars used in ketchup manufacturing contain no gluten, some types of vinegar that are derived from wheat do contain it, and care must be taken to avoid these.
  • In the same way, stabilizing agents added to thicken the sauce might contain gluten, and should be checked.
  • Cross-contamination occurs when a gluten-free food item becomes contaminated, by either direct or indirect contact with a gluten-containing food item. Cross-contamination might occur in industries where other products containing gluten are produced.

The Detectable Gluten Graph

Because a qualitative test cannot determine how much gluten is in a product, it may give a result indicating that gluten was found in foods that actually contain very little gluten. This includes some foods that would normally be considered gluten-free under FDA regulations.

Some gluten sensitive individuals strive to avoid all gluten even in extremely small quantities. If you fall into this category, the qualitative graph is one you should pay attention to, along with the 3 PPM graph. High percentages on these two graphs could be considered indications of consistently lower gluten content in the product.

On the other hand, if you feel you are okay with the possibility of having very small, trace amounts of gluten in a product, you should probably disregard the qualitative test graph, and instead focus on the 5, 10 and 20 PPM graphs. Remember that studies have shown that the majority of people with celiac disease experience no adverse effects from consuming foods containing less than 20 PPM of gluten.

Please keep in mind that the test results, along with any analysis, are provided for informational purposes only. Gluten testing is never 100% error free. As such, a small number of the test results presented may not be accurate. I strongly encourage you to make your dietary choices based on multiple criteria, and only after thorough research using multiple sources. Is It Truly Gluten Free? can certainly be one of those sources, but it should not be the only one.

Which Sauces Are Usually Gluten Free

Taste Test: Gourmet Ketchup

The good news is, there are a lot of sauces and condiments which are gluten free.

As a rule, these sauces are USUALLY gluten free:

  • Mayonnaise
  • Most jams, curds and marmalades
  • Sriracha chilli sauce

Now, isn’t that a delightfully long list of things you can eat!? We’re off to a good start!

Usually all of the above sauces are free from gluten, but it is always important to check,

Only last week I went to a restaurant where the mayonnaise had a ‘may contain traces of gluten’ warning on it, must to my surprise.

If you have coeliac disease it’s advised to avoid all foods with a ‘may contain’ warning.

So as well as checking the ingredients, make sure you also check for any warnings too.

It’s also important when shopping in the free from aisle to check the sauces there are gluten free.

It can be easy to assume that everything in that aisle is safe to eat, but some of it may be in there because it’s dairy or egg free, but still contains gluten. It’s rare, but it happens.

It’s also worth checking the lists below as sometimes, for example, a vegan mayonnaise will be in the free from aisle and marked ‘gluten free’, when the normal, cheaper variety is gluten free anyway!

So definitely shop around if you want to save your pennies!
