Are Oats Gluten Free

Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Oatmeal Cups

As we mentioned, oats themselves are naturally gluten free. However, as with all foods, there are also some concerns with oatmeal that gluten intolerant people will want to be aware of to avoid any issues or painful flareups. Although many oats are safe for gluten intolerant individuals, cross-contamination can occur in facilities or even in fields where wheat, rye or barley are also present. But if not all oats are safe for gluten free diets, the follow up question is whether oatmeal is gluten free!

Are The Oats Used To Make Cheerios Safe

Cheerios is one of the most accessible cereal brands around, and most varieties of Cheerios are labeled gluten free. The brand is also a sponsor of the Celiac Disease Foundation and proudly displays this on boxes of its cereal.

However, despite the gluten-free label, the Canadian Celiac Association recommends that people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity avoid Cheerios, even if its labeled gluten free, due to concerns about potential gluten in each box, and due to what is says is General Mills unwillingness to be fully transparent in its testing methods.

Cheerios uses commodity oats, but that isnt what concerns most people. Most concerning is that General Mills allegedly doesnt properly test each batch to ensure all boxes are free from gluten. You can read more about the baffling testing process in this article by the Gluten-Free Watchdog.

On top of it all, the gluten-free community grew wary of Cheerios long ago after gluten made its way into nearly two million boxes, which General Mills recalled in 2015. The company blamed it on human error.

I tested Cheerios and Apple Cinnamon Cheerios for hidden gluten with the Nima Sensor. You can see how they fared in my article, List of Gluten-Free Cereals.

Cooking With Gluten Free Oatmeal

Cooking gluten free oatmeal is exactly the same as cooking with regular oatmeal, as there is no actual difference in the oats themselves. Try some of our favorite oatmeal recipes with any kind of oatmeal that you buy! Of course, if you are cooking for a gluten intolerant person, then it is important to ensure that your recipe does not include any additional ingredients that contain gluten! Watch out for wheat, barley, rye and triticale: you should be safe as long as the recipe does not call for those grains in any form.

In addition to eating it by the bowl, oatmeal is a great alternative ingredient in gluten free baking as well! We love using oatmeal in place of wheat flours in gluten-free recipes like this delicious Wheat Free Oatmeal Cake and these Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies, all gluten free! The oatmeal helps ingredients stick together, a similar purpose to flour in most recipes, and it also crumbles in a delicious, chewy texture which is perfect for muffins, pies, and cookies!

Other Issues With Oatmeal And Gluten

Contamination isnt your only worry when it comes to ensuring that your oatmeal is gluten free. Oatmeal commonly comes in other flavors or varieties with added fruits, veggies or spices. These are delicious, but face the same risks that the oats do when it comes to gluten contamination. Youll want to make sure that none of the added ingredients contain gluten grains, but theres an additional step to take. Even fruits like apples and bananas, which do not naturally contain gluten, can still be in danger of that trace contamination from the fields or from the factories, so look for a gluten free stamp on all of your oatmeal to ensure you wont have any accidental issues.

Are Quaker Oats Safe

Bob

Quaker makes Quick 1-Minute Oats and several flavored instant oatmeals that are labeled gluten free. While not certified gluten free, Quaker says its commodity oats have been sorted and rigorously tested to be gluten free.

Quaker says, Oats are inherently gluten free, but may come in contact with gluten-containing grains at the field, during storage or during transportation. As the worlds leading experts in oat milling, Quaker employs a breakthrough process to sort and clean the oats. This process uses both mechanical and optical sorters to specifically remove these stray grains based on density, color and length, applying a sorting protocol that we believe to be unique to the industry.

We confirm our capability to remove these grains with multiple quality checks throughout the milling process up through finished product testing so that our millers can confidently produce a gluten-free oat product that meets FDA standards. This includes testing individual samples from each production lot of our finished product. Only if each of those samples in the product lot passes analytical testing can the lot be released from the mill.

Our milling expertise is unparalleled and is how weve been able to turn oats into Quaker oats. As is always the case, the quality of our products and safety of our consumers is our number one priority. We take this seriously. Its that care and attention to detail that we believe has helped earn us the trust of consumers for all these years.

How To Make Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

They are quick and easy to make.

  • Whisk the dry ingredients together except for the old fashioned rolled oats
  • Cream the butter with the sugars until fluffy. Careful not to soften butter fully or to warm it. Semi-firm butter is best and will help cookies spread less.
  • Add the dry ingredients into the wet and mix until just combined
  • Fold in the oatmeal and chocolate chips or raisins
  • Scoop out the dough with a cookie scoop. Using the cookie scoop is the easiest way to make these cookies uniform in size and easier to handle as the dough can get sticky
  • Roll the dough from the scoop into balls and place on a lined baking sheet.
  • Bake the cookies until the edges are set and golden. The centre will still look unset and that is fine they will continue to bake even after coming out of the oven while they sit on the hot baking sheet. Make sure to bake them with the oven rack placed in the middle of the oven.
  • Allow them to cool in the baking pan 2-5 minutes and then transfer them directly to cooling rack to cool completely.
  • Cookie baking tips:

    Size matters:

The size you make the cookies will affect the baking time. Making them larger than the recipe calls for will require longer baking time and vice versa.

    Oven rack placement:

    Baking sheet choice:
