Celiac Disease Children: How To Know If Your Child Is Gluten Intolerant

There is no test that can confirm gluten sensitivity. The only way to know, if your child is gluten sensitive is to start a gluten-free diet for 30 days and see if there is an improvement.

Observe the behaviour of your child at the end of the 30-day trial. If you notice a significant change in the behaviour of your child, with no complaints of abdominal pain, irritability then you should continue the gluten-free diet further. In between if there is even a little gluten consumption there can be a variety of symptoms, tantrums that may continue for days to weeks. So careful planning is required on your part to make it a success.

Both Wonderful And Dreadful At The Same Time

It was wonderful because it felt like an exciting adventure into the unknown. And dreadful because my cooking had taken years to get to where it was and I used wheat flour for almost everything. To give up all those delicious recipes for something I knew next to nothing about was a hard thing to do.

I have learned to make Pizza as good as my wheat flour recipe. The dreadfulness has subsided completely now and being gluten free gets more exciting and wonderful all time. Having a burger with a gluten free bun becomes a pleasure not to be taken for granted. You learn to be more grateful for the extra treat every so often rather than needing that bread everyday.

Testing negative does not necessarily assure that there is no level of gluten sensitivity and you must still watch for celiac disease symptoms in children even after an initial negative test. Blood tests must usually be performed twice for accuracy. I will discuss the more common test in another specific article about the celiac disease blood test.

The only sure way to determine gluten intolerance in children is to remove gluten completely from their diet and see if their symptoms improve. Gluten-free living may be intimidating at first, but Im sure you will agree that it is worth it when it comes to your childs well-being.

How To Transition Your Toddler To A Gluten

The Gluten Intolerance Group recommends that you should explain to your toddler before making any dietary changes and educate them about gluten sensitivity in the simplest way possible.

Rather than focusing on what your toddler can’t eat, focus on what they can. Explore the many varieties of healthy, delicious gluten-free foods for your toddler. Most processed foods have gluten-free alternatives but start with gluten-free foods that your toddler loves already. Then you can gradually introduce more gluten-free foods. When buying gluten-free foods, don’t rely on labels. Read the ingredients to ensure that none contains gluten.

While some people choose to make the whole family gluten-free, the rest of the family can continue taking gluten but be cautious to avoid cross-contact. It is best to have a separate space for your toddler’s gluten-free foods.

With a gluten-sensitive toddler, you will have to plan for all your toddler’s meals and communicate with any caregivers about their gluten-free diet.

You can join a support group like the Gluten Intolerance Group to connect with other gluten-free families.

Getting An Accurate Diagnosis

There are a few blood tests that can be done to test whether or not your child has celiac disease. While not typically performed on children, there is also a intestinal biopsy that is easy to administer which can also aid in a diagnosis of celiac disease. There are also blood tests that can be done to determine food allergies. Both of these types of tests will be helpful if your child is suffering from a gluten reaction of any kind. Essentially, you start with a genetic test to determine if your child has the genetic predisposition for celiac disease. Then you do a blood test to test for raised antibodies. Since this can be inconclusive, an intestinal biopsy and a stool lipid test may be required to determine the extend of the gluten intolerance or celiac disease.

A separate allergy test should be conducted with an allergy specialist for traditional histamine response to wheat and other common allergens. To read more about testing, I encourage you treat my article, Gluten Intolerance Test.

Also, celiac disease is more common in people who have:

  • Type 1 diabetes.
  • Selective antibody deficiency .

Over The Years Ive Found Great Gluten Free Foods And Eaten Many Which I Just Had To Spit Out

One day I found a bread and muffins that didnt taste like cardboard, but like what I used to eat. Peachy from Organic Oven and her delicious gluten, sugar and dairy free baked foods, was my saviour and I was in heaven.

Both my daughters have grown up, for the most, part gluten free, and havent seemed worse off because of it. Ive been asked on more than one occasion, that if I avoid giving them gluten , Wont they react more when they do eat it?

When they have pizza at school once a month, or head to a friends or birthday party, theyve told me about their bellyache afterwards. But, when asked Was the pizza was worth it, their reply is often yes, so now I leave them to make that choice.

As for when they are at home, they dont know the difference between wheat, rice, kamut or spelt bread unless I tell them whats coming.

Clear Signs That Your Child Is Gluten Intolerant

Pin on allergy

They may differ as allergies and intolerance can vary from mild to severe. In some cases, signs immediately after consumption. In some cases, it takes hours even days. It might be a good idea to track the diet from days before if you notice any of these signs.

If you notice,

  • Acne or Rashes on elbows, knees and back of the neck. It could be a sign of Gluten sensitivity in your child.
  • 2. Diarrhoea, Gas or Constipation is a red light for gluten sensitivity. People with celiac disease have inflamed small intestines which causes these digestive issues. In my brothers case, this was the first sign that caught my parents attention.

    3. Distended Stomach or Bloating. Most common sign when people report gluten sensitivity. One study showed that 87% of people who had suspected non-celiac gluten sensitivity experienced bloating.

    4. Unexplained weight loss is a common side effect of undiagnosed Celiac disease. A study in celiac disease patients, two-thirds had lost weight in the six months leading up to their diagnosis.

    5. Brain Fog. The child can be forgetful, unable to retain information and mentally fatigued.

    6. Iron deficiency. In celiac disease, nutrient consumption by small intestines is compromised. Hence, children can experience less amount so iron in the body. Iron deficiency anaemia can be among the first symptoms of celiac disease that your doctor would notice.

    Gluten Intolerance And Child Behaviour

Children and adolescents with coeliac disease may experience behavior changes as a result of their bodys response to gluten. Young children may show greater levels of irritability as result of untreated coeliac disease, while adolescents may experience depression, anxiety, or even panic attacks. Some people believe that NCGS also has an impact on childrens behavior and cite anecdotal evidence of anxiety, hyperactivity, and aggression. More medical research is required to confirm these symptoms and understand why they might be occurring

S To Take If Your Suspect Your Child Has An Allergy

    • Eliminate: Eliminate any suspect foods for at least a month and see if symptoms change or improve. This must be adhered to 100%. Even one cracker, if a person is gluten-intolerant, can create an inflammatory cascade.
    • Get Tested: An IgG food sensitivity test can be helpful in narrowing down potential triggers. Please note that this is a different test than is offered by typical allergists. You may need to see a natural health care practitioner for this test.
    • Heal The Gut: Determining the allergies is the first step. The second is to heal the gut to reduce ongoing risk of reactivity. This is done through a health promoting diet and key supplements that support a healthy intestinal lining.
    • Keep It Going: Being consistent in your efforts, whether for yourself or your child, is key. Once you are starting the process of healing, an ice cream as a special treat, or that slice of birthday cake will not be worth undoing all your effort up to this point and also can become confusing for your child.

    What Causes A Food Intolerance

It is often unclear why a person is sensitive to certain foods.

If your symptoms happen after eating dairy products, it’s possible you may have lactose intolerance. This means your body cannot digest lactose, a natural sugar found in milk, yoghurt and soft cheeses. A GP can usually diagnose lactose intolerance by looking at your symptoms and medical history.

Some people have trouble digesting wheat and experience bloating, wind, diarrhoea, being sick and stomach pain after eating bread. Read more about wheat intolerance .

Otherwise, the culprit may be a food additive, chemical or contaminant, such as:

    • monosodium glutamate
    • histamine
    • toxins, viruses, bacteria or parasites that have contaminated food
    • artificial food colours, preservatives or flavour enhancers

The High Costs Of Missed Diagnosis

Celiac Disease and Gluten Sensitivity: Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

In all, Billy saw eight specialists. By the time a rheumatoid arthritis specialist threw up his hands, the teen couldnt even throw a football with his dad. At no time did anyone ask if there was a history of celiac disease in his family. While his mom, Mary Buhring, has the disease, she didnt think to mention it to the doctors because she didnt know that it was hereditary and that her children should have been screened.

In fact, the possibility wasnt raised until the following year, when Billy was seeing a chiropractor. In one of the sessions, I mentioned that my mom has celiac disease, he recalls. The chiropractor asked if I had it. I said, I have no idea. He said it would be a good idea to be tested.

After an 18-month ordeal of Billy living with pain, diminishing confidence and the family getting no closer to an answer, celiac testing finally solved the mystery. At one point, it got so bad, we were worried he had cancer, his mom says.

She feels guilty for not having known that celiac disease is genetic: I wish Id known. I should have known.

Billy improved rapidly on the gluten-free diet. His chronic shoulder pain vanished after two months, and his outlook brightened with both the physical improvement and knowing his diagnosis.

When the biopsy was done, the doctor said that even though there were signs of damage in her small intestine, it was not yet severe, says Elyn Shindler Moldow.

How awesome is that? asks her mother. Clara!
