Here are some helpful tips to help you make the best homemade low carb taco seasoning:
- This recipe makes a good size batch, but feel free to double it for an even larger batch. I recommend doubling it if you make tacos or fajitas on a weekly basis.

Ortega taco seasoning mix is not gluten-free. Ill tell you, I went on a deep dive to prove myself wrong here, because I was certain this brand was gluten-free.
After checking and rechecking the ingredients lists against what else I know about gluten-containing ingredients, and the hidden names of gluten, I was sad to realize this brand actually does contain gluten.
You can find it under yeast extract in most of their taco seasonings. Yeast extract is derived from barley, which is a source of gluten.
The only one of their products that had no gluten-containing ingredients was their fish taco seasoning mix, however that wasnt labeled as gluten-free either.
The bottom line when it comes to buying gluten-free taco seasoning is that there are only a few good options and brands, and even fewer if youre looking for that gluten-free label.
The best and most simple way to ensure what youre eating is gluten-free is to make your own gluten-free taco seasoning at home from scratch.
How I Use Gluten Free Taco Seasoning
I use it in place of the spices in our recipe for chicken Parm meatballs to transform them into Mexican-style meatballs. I use it on sauteed vegetables to make fajitas.
I even use this spice blend in place of the individual spices in our recipe for red enchilada sauce. Thats the sauce you see drizzled on the chicken tacos in the photos.
The chicken in the tacos pictured below is made by slicing skinless boneless chicken breast into thin slices. Then, I toss them with cornstarch and our homemade gluten free taco seasoning and allow them to sit for at least 30 minutes and up to a day in the refrigerator.
To cook the chicken, I simply saute it in a neutral oil with a relatively high smoke point. Peanut oil and grapeseed oil work great, but so does canola oil .

The reason for this is that they are committed to labeling products with any hidden sources of food allergens that people may be avoiding.
For example, they know that many people who avoid gluten are looking for certain ingredients, like maltodextrin as a hidden source of gluten.
Since maltodextrin can be sourced from a variety of different carbohydrate sources, those of us who are gluten-free are looking out for a sign that the maltodextrin used in a product is in fact gluten-free or not, so we know to avoid it.

Are Tortilla Chips Gluten Free
Tortilla chips are a bit different than the section above on tortillas specifically.
Most tortilla chips are made with corn tortillas and are gluten free. Be sure they are marked as gluten free by the manufacturer and were not made in shared oil or on shared lines with gluten products. Check they are not made with flour tortillas, especially if they look different than a typical yellow corn tortilla chip.
Flour tortillas are rarely used to make tortilla chips. When they are, the chips are much puffier and tend to be lighter than the standard yellow corn tortilla chips.
However, color may not be the best indicator because white corn is also used to make tortilla chips. Read the ingredients and check for a gluten free label from the manufacturer to be sure.
Some corn tortillas can contain gluten, so even if they are corn tortillas, check to make sure. Traditionally, corn tortillas contain no wheat, rye, barley, or derivatives. So if they are made in the standard way, they should be safely gluten free.
What Brands Of Spices Are Gluten Free
Most brands of individual spices, such as those made by McCormick, are labeled gluten free, but dont contain any certification. McCormicks taco seasoning blend is also labeled as gluten free.
A gluten free label means that the product doesnt contain wheat, barley, or rye, but it goes beyond that. As of 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires that any product labeled gluten free must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten.
There are 3 private organizations that provide a designation of certified gluten free. Among the 3 certifying organizations, only the Celiac Support Association requires that the product contain less than 5 parts per million for certification. The other two require 20 parts per million, like the FDA.

You may be wondering how much homemade taco seasoning equals 1 store-bought packet of taco seasoning. No need to wonder anymoreit takes about 2 tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning to equal the amount of 1 taco packet.
