% Gluten Free Restaurants In London

In truth, I dont make a massive effort to search out 100% gluten free restaurants. Of course Im happy when this is an option, but given the choices and high standards of non-100% gluten free restaurants in London, this is an option for me but not a requirement.

Ardiciocca I adored my meal at this 100% gluten free trattoria and pizzeria in Fulham. If youre looking for the lightest, tastiest gluten free pizza was top quality ingredients, you would be hard pushed to find a better place than this authentic, Italian run restaurant. Despite the lightness of the food I could not help indulging on my meal here. The menu is full of flavour combinations you wont find offered gluten free elsewhere in London from potato and mussel croquettes, arancini, pasta with beef ragu to tripe to pizza Nduja with lemon and rocket. This is a must-visit destination in London. ££

Free From Bakehouse Although Carolines award winning can be bought online and in various outlets ranging from Fortnums to Whole Food Markets, its to Borough Market you should come. The market itself is a wonderful place for a foodie to roam, if a little crowded on a weekend. My favourites are the savoury tarts and the raspberry and white chocolate brownies are impossible for me to resist so good!

Honesty Is The Best Policy

I appreciate that Panera Bread is open and honest when it comes to cross contamination. They clearly state on their website Given the likelihood of cross-contamination in our bakery-cafe environment, this list is not suitable for people with Celiac Disease, a heightened gluten sensitivity or a wheat allergy.

Again, I will emphasize for my friends with celiac disease, exercise the caution you need for yourself. Only you know if you can risk it. At least they are not trying to fake it for some extra cash.

I do wish a company as big as Panera Bread would make more of an effort. Im sure its difficult given the way their restaurants are set up.

Romeos Sugar Free Bakery

5 best restaurants with gluten

A great spot for a gluten-free breakfast in London is Romeos Sugar Free Bakery in Islington. From the English breakfast to the cakes and breads, everything is sugar-free and gluten-free. They also have many vegan and dairy-free options. The menu is packed with savory and sweet goodies like quiches, sausages rolls, and cheesecakes, and on weekends you can indulge in buckwheat crepes. The gluten-free goodies are good, but theyre kind of on the expensive side for what it is. Nonetheless, its worth adding to your list of must-visit gluten-free spots in London.

My Philosophy For Eating Out Gluten Free

Before I get into my step-by-step guide for finding safe gluten free restaurants, I want to lay out my philosophy for eating out gluten free.

I have two auto-immune conditions Celiac Disease and Eosinophilic Esophagitis which means I need to be particularly vigilant about maintaining a gluten free diet or I might end up in the hospital with food stuck in my esophagus. Which happened three times in my first year of being a Celiac, the first of which led to my diagnosis.

My needs might be different than yours you might just be avoiding gluten because it makes you feel terrible when you eat it, which is great and Im glad youre here which is why I want to take a second to outline exactly what my needs are.

When it comes to gluten free dining, I prefer eating out at dedicated gluten free restaurants when possible for a couple of reasons.

First, the risk of cross-contamination is significantly lower than eating at a place with a mixed kitchen. For me, the peace of mind is worth the extra money that youre usually going to be spending.

So when youre eating out gluten free, make sure to support the dedicated gluten free restaurants.

If they dont have those processes, or cant articulate them to me, Im out.

Here are some other semi-random thoughts on eating out gluten free in mixed kitchens.

Porter Creek Hardwood Grill

Ask for the gluten-free menu at Porter Creek for a variety of options like rotisserie chicken, steak, and fish options, and a few salads. If the weather is nice, opt for the patio for a relaxing afternoon or evening.

We recommend: Mahi Mahi with quinoa in an avocado-herb cream sauce.

Its a toss-up whether the fries and Tater Tots are gluten-free, and theres a high risk of cross contamination.

Sonic is a tricky one for GF food options, so be sure to tell the employees about your allergy when ordering. If youre ordering with someone else, be sure their food doesnt touch yours. You dont want those gluten-y fries all up on your bunless burger.

But if youre craving ice cream or a slush, you should be A-OK at Sonic.

Eating Out: 7 Tips For Staying Gluten

Tips for Dining Away from Home

Staying gluten-free when dining out can be a source of anxiety. Many restaurants have gluten-free offerings, but how can you be sure that procedures are being followed to avoid cross-contact and that all ingredients used are truly safe?

The best approach to feeling more confident about the place where youre dining is to choose a restaurant that has gone through GIGs Gluten-Free Food Services Validation Program. GFFS works with restaurants and other foodservice establishments, to educate, train, and audit their staff to meet and adhere to the highest standards for preparing gluten-free food. Once they successfully complete the program, they are validated as Gluten Free Safe Spots.

When eating at restaurants that are not validated, follow these tips to help assess the safety of what youre ordering.

1.Choose the right kind of eating establishment.

Your success at gluten-free dining is determined by several factors, including the type of restaurant you choose.

2.Call Ahead

3.Dine early or late.

Time your meal either before or after the busiest mealtime. You will have more time and easier access to the people who can help you. Even the most cooperative server may not have the time you need during rush hour.

4.Clearly explain your dietary restrictions.

When ordering at a food establishment, allow extra time to discuss your needs for a gluten-free meal.

5.Ask to have your food prepared on a clean surface with clean utensils.

‘eating Just Made Me Sicker’: Why Celiac Disease Is Such A Frustrating Diagnosiswhile Receiving A Celiac Disease Diagnosis Is A Relief To Many Living A Gluten

Eating just made me sicker, Rachel Carlson, a Pittsburgh woman who was finally diagnosed with the disease last year, told TODAY.

The only treatment is a strict gluten-free diet, but while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has rules for products labeled as gluten-free, it applies only to packaged foods. A radio show in St. Louis recently caused a stir when an anonymous caller said she worked at a bakery that lied about its gluten-free foods.

Good For: Finding Dedicated Gluten Free Restaurants And Restaurants With Gluten Free Options Near You

You should definitely download Find Me Gluten Free . This is basically a crowdsourced app specifically for gluten free restaurant reviews. Think of it like TripAdvisor but all gluten free. The app is useful for a few things: 1) Finding restaurants with gluten free options close to your location, 2) Finding 100% gluten free restaurants.

Other than that, I personally find that Find Me Gluten Free is a little bit hit or miss.

First of all, depending on where you are, there might not be many reviews. Ive literally had the app since 2013 so I can say it has a lot more reviews than back then, but its still patchy in rural areas, and outside North America. However for big North American cities, you will find many useful reviews!

The other issue Ive found is with the reviews themselves. I dont always trust the reviews on this app which are sometimes like three words long, with no details, and no context for if the reviewer is avoiding cross contact or not. A great meal! review on a McDonalds is not very useful. This is why I tend to trust bloggers more, because you get more of their actual history, context, and trustworthiness.

Okay, okay, sorry for ragging on Find Me Gluten Free. I do use it, and I have definitely benefited from it! I just want you to be careful, and like everything else Im mentioning, do your own investigations.

Good For: Finding Celiac Safe Or Vetted Restaurants With Gluten Free Options

THE 30 BEST Gluten Free Restaurants in Boston

Similar to celiac associations and support groups, Ive found that dietitians often have a document that includes local restaurants with gluten free options. Both celiac dietitians Ive seen gave me lists for local restaurants. The benefit to this is that you can be confident that the person giving you the list really understands celiac disease and cross contact, because they are a health professional .

You probably cant get an actual appointment with the dietitian if you are traveling, but even then just reaching out to the office and requesting a general list is a good resource.

Panera Bread Gluten Free Stance

You wont see a dedicated Panera Bread gluten free menu. That is because they use different terminology. Panera Bread uses the words gluten sensitive menu, gluten conscious and without gluten. Im not sure what I think about it to be honest.

I kind of feel like its a way for them to not take responsibility and avoid the effort customers with celiac disease need to enjoy a delicious meal.

Keep that in mind. Panera Bread has items that do not have gluten but if you are concerned about cross contamination then maybe think twice. At the end of the day, do what is best for you. Panera Bread does have good food, I just wish they would make an effort for the entire gluten free community.

Good For: If The Other Resources Fail This May Turn Up Some Restaurants To Investigate

I know I just slated TripAdvisor a few points above, but BEAR WITH ME. TripAdvisor can still be a useful resource when finding gluten free restaurants. The trick is not to look at those automatically generated top 10 gluten free restaurants articles. Nope. You need to look at the actual comments, left by actual people!

Go to TripAdvisor and click onto a specific restaurant you are interested in. Then scroll down to the comments section and search for the phrase gluten free. If youre lucky, some detailed comments will come up describing the gluten free options. I will then read through the comments and see if this restaurant seems like the real deal. .

Eating Gluten Free In Destin And 30a Doesnt Have To Be Tricky But Knowing Some Of The Restaurants That Offer Suitable Options Can Definitely Make Your Trip To The Beach A Lot Easier

Black Seed Burger Cult is serving up vegan & gluten-free options

Ive been visiting these beautiful Destin and 30A beaches since I was 8 years old and can honestly say they are my absolute favorites! The soft, white sands and emerald green waters are addictive and so is the food!

Eating gluten free here can be pretty simple, even in a sea of fried seafood and hushpuppies. A quick google search will yield lots of options but I always find that a personal experience can really add value to the decision-making process.

When I come to the coast, I personally love filling up on blackened fish and fresh cole slaw, so youll see some of that here, but there are plenty of other options so check them out!

Since weve stayed everywhere from Ft Walton down to Panama City, and everything in between, I am trying to include some favorites that my family has grown to love over the years. But Ill add that there are SO MANY more weve yet to try so be sure to do your own exploring. Also worth mentioning, if you are celiac or have a severe gluten sensitivity and/or reaction, youll need to communicate that with the kitchen. Even better, call ahead to speak with the manager to see how familiar they are with eating gluten free.

Additionally, these restaurants become VERY crowded with long waits. If you need extra attention with your gluten free order, make sure to dine early or cross contamination is going to be much more of a hurdle to jump!

What To Do When You Arrive

Your trip is finally here! Youre finally going to get to use all the great research youve done to eat some incredible gluten free food! But what you do when you get there will set the tone for your meal, and go a long way towards

First, if you make a reservation, put that one of you has Celiac Disease and needs to eat gluten free. This will tip the restaurant off to be prepared for you in advance. Ive had servers say which one of you has Celiac Disease? before I get the chance to tell them! What a great feeling.

When you get to the restaurant and are seated, the first thing you need to do is tell your server about your needs.

I usually say something like this:

I have a question for you I have Celiac Disease, and need to eat strictly gluten free. I talked to you all beforehand and you said that was possible, so Im hoping you can help me figure out what is safe for me to eat on the menu. Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

Then, the server will either walk you through the menu, which is when you should feel free to ask questions like do you have a dedicated fryer or is that made on the same surface as something like toast? Or they will find a manager who can help.

When you order, ask them to confirm with the kitchen that what you ordered is, in fact, safe. This should never be a problem, and will give the kitchen a heads up that youre serious about eating gluten free.

Add More Liquid/fat To Gluten

Have your gluten-free baked goods ever been dry or super crumbly? Gluten-free baked goods can be dry and crumbly without any gluten. When you are adapting a recipe that calls for regular, all-purpose flour to a gluten-free version, most of the time, theres a need for more liquid or fat.

Some alternatives you can try here are to add additional fat, like butter or oil, or liquids such as water or milk. Greek yogurt or sour cream can also help keep the batter moist. Go slow, as ¼ cup at a time, until you get the texture you are looking for.
