Product-development manager Tim Chinniah says Medifast started its gluten-free line about four years ago. About 40 of the companys 100 meal replacements and snacks are now certified gluten-free by the Gluten Free Certification Organization. They include brownies, pancake mixes and ready-to-eat cereal.

We actually got on it much earlier than others, Chinniah says. If its not gluten free already, were looking at how to make it gluten free.

At a Medifast production facility in Owings Mills, Maryland, workers are vigilant against cross-contamination.
