Popular Chocolate Brands That Are Gluten Free

Navigating the chocolate aisles trying to find bars suitable when you are diagnosed with coeliac disease can seem like a daunting task, but theres plenty of obvious omissions you can make straightaway.

Anything containing wafer is out, making products like KitKats and Kinder Buenos easy to omit. Likewise, bars such as a Twix or Double Decker that contain biscuit pieces instead are clearly to be avoided too.

Somewhat less obvious to look out for though, are the crispy shells that are found on items such as Smarties. Smarties are made using wheat flour, though thankfully standard M& Ms are not. Whilst that makes for an easy substitution for Smarties fans, it also highlights just how much care you need to take when choosing between seemingly similar items.

Below, youll find a list of some of the main confectionery brands, and what chocolate is gluten free within their ranges. Whilst all care has been taken in compiling this list, its worth keeping in mind that manufacturers can change their recipes at any time without consumers necessarily hearing about it. For that reason, its always best to check an ingredients list just in case of any recent changes to your old favourites.

Or for the latest information, we recommend visiting Coeliac UK who have a food and drink directory, a list of all products suitable for a gluten free diet.

    Beneficial To Bone Health

Chocolate milk is rich in calcium the main mineral present in your bones.

Dairy is the biggest source of dietary calcium in the United States and Canada providing around 72% of the average persons daily calcium intake. The remainder comes from vegetables, grains, legumes, fruit, meat, poultry, fish, and eggs .

The calcium in dairy is easily absorbable. Researchers believe this may be the main reason why dairy is consistently linked to the development of strong bones in children and adolescents .

Milk is also rich in protein and phosphorus, as well as often fortified with vitamin D all of which are additional nutrients important for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth (

    17 ).

That said, these nutrients arent exclusive to dairy. Other calcium-rich foods include legumes, nuts, seeds, seaweed, leafy greens, blackstrap molasses, and some types of tofu.

Several foods are also commonly fortified in calcium and vitamin D, including some types of cereal and juice, as well as certain plant milks and yogurts.

    Summary

Milk is rich in calcium, protein, phosphorus, and vitamin D. These nutrients are instrumental in building and maintaining strong bones and may protect your bones as you age.

How Can Gluten Get Into Chocolate

It’s possible even for pure, unsweetened chocolate to contain a bit of gluten if it’s been subjected to gluten cross-contamination in harvesting or processing.

Sadly, the chances of having your chocolate contain gluten just go up from there. The more ingredients used in your chocolate, or that are used in the facility that makes your chocolate, the higher the risk.

Obviously, some chocolate candy products feature gluten ingredients, either in the form of wheat or in the form of barley malt .

For example, Hershey’s Whoppers include both barley malt and wheat flour in their recipe, which places them off-limits for those following the gluten-free diet.

Other chocolate candies contain no gluten ingredients but they are subject to gluten cross-contamination because they’re made on the same manufacturing equipment or in the same facilities as those gluten-containing items.

In my surveys of candy manufacturers, this seems to be the biggest reason many chocolates aren’t considered gluten-free.

    Identifying Gluten Free Chocolate Products

    Is Dove Chocolate Gluten Free?

For those that have only recently been diagnosed with coeliac disease, we have a helpful section that will walk you through the basics of what to look out for. Even if youre a long-time coeliac though, you may find that you struggle when identifying potential problem ingredients within chocolate. Whilst many will be aware of a lot of the main culprits when it comes to checking food labels, it isnt always easy to spot which chocolate is gluten free.

Keep an eye out for these gluten-based ingredients in particular: barley malt, wheat flour, malt syrup, and some glucose syrups and dextrose.

Anything containing cookie pieces, biscuit chunks or wafer centres are obviously not suitable for people with coeliac disease either.

    Is Blue Cheese Gluten

Blue cheeses include Stilton, Blue Shropshire, Blue Cheshire, Blue Wensleydale, Buton Blue, Blue Vinney, Danish Blue, Roquefort and Gorgonzola. Traditionally the molds that are in blue cheese were grown on rye grains, malt or wheat-based dextrose . These days, blue cheese is rarely derived from these methods, however it is still prudent to read the label.

A study done in 2009 by the Canadian Celiac Association, determined that even if a gluten based product was used to grow the mold, the presence of gluten was found to be undetectable or in concentrations less than 1 ppm which is well below the 20ppm levels considered safe by the CFIA/FDA.

However, those who are ultra-sensitive to gluten should still avoid blue cheese. Instead, use feta or goat cheese which has a similarly sharp and tangy flavor.

May Be Linked To Certain Cancers

In some cases, diets rich in milk and other dairy products have been linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer.

For instance, a recent review of 11 studies in over 700,000 people, found that men with high intakes of dairy especially from whole milk may be 1.5 times more likely to die from prostate cancer .

Similarly, another recent review of 34 studies linked dairy consumption to a 20% higher risk of stomach cancer .

However, other studies observed no link between milk or dairy intake and cancer risk. In some cases, dairy even appears to offer small protective effects against colorectal, bladder, breast, pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancers .

Whats more, diets high in added sugars have been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers including esophageal cancer and cancer of the pleura, a membrane that covers the lungs .

Though some research indicates that certain types of milk may elevate your risk of certain cancers, more studies exploring these associations are needed before strong conclusions can be made.

    Summary

Chocolate milk is rich in added sugars and may increase your risk of various conditions, including heart disease and certain cancers. Still, research is not conclusive.

May Help You Recover From Workouts

Is Cadbury Dairy Milk Gluten Free?

Chocolate milk may help your muscles recover after a grueling workout.

Thats because beverages rich in carbs and protein are particularly effective at replenishing the sugars, fluids, and electrolytes lost during exercise .

This may explain why chocolate milk is often promoted as a great recovery drink. That said, most studies showing benefits are done on athletes whose workouts are typically more intense and frequent than the average exerciser.

Because of this, its unclear to what extent nonathletes benefit from drinking chocolate milk to recover from a workout .

Whats more, the benefits arent exclusive to chocolate milk.

A review of 12 studies reported that chocolate milk was no more effective than other carb- and protein-rich beverages at improving post-exercise recovery markers, such as serum lactate and serum creatine kinase .

Therefore, a homemade smoothie or other well-balanced meals or snacks are likely just as effective at helping your muscles recover from your workout while being much more nutritious.

    Summary

Chocolate milk offers a combination of protein and carbs that may help boost your bodys ability to recover after workouts. However, well-balanced meals or snacks are likely more nutritious and equally effective options.

Drinking chocolate milk regularly may have several downsides.
