What Kind Of Pork Should I Use For Sweet & Sour Pork:

Chicken Nuggets. Sweet and Sour Sauce. #glutenfree

You have many options for the type of pork you use in this recipe. I went with pork tenderloin, which is easy to find, very easy to chop, and also nice and tender. You can also use any type of pork roast or pork chops. Just note that you only need 1 ½ pounds of meat, and it can be difficult to find a pork roast that small.

The pork tenderloins at my grocery store are just over 2 ½ pounds, so I use 1 ½ pounds for the recipe and simply season and roast the other 1 pound in the oven. If youd like, you can always make a bigger batch of sweet and sour pork just be sure to adjust the amount of sauce, eggs, flour, and veggies depending on how big of a batch you make.

How To Make Sweet & Sour Pork:

Add the ingredients for the sauce to a small blender and blend until smooth . Set aside until ready to use.

Cut the pork into 1-inch cubes. Whisk the eggs into a large mixing bowl until well beaten. Add the chopped pork and stir until pork is coated in egg. Pour in the gluten-free all-purpose flour and stir until the pork is coated in flour.

Heat the avocado oil in a large skillet over medium-high and add the onion. Cook, stirring occasionally for 2 minutes, until the onion begins to soften. Add the bell pepper and garlic and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until softened, about another 3 minutes. Transfer the vegetables to a plate or bowl and set aside.

Add another tablespoon of avocado oil to the skillet and return to heat. Transfer the breaded pork to the skillet. Allow pork to brown without touching it for about 2 to 3 minutes, until golden-brown. Flip or stir and continue browning the meat, stirring occasionally, for another 4 to 5 minutes, until the meat is well-browned on all sides.

Pour the sauce into the skillet and stir well. Transfer the vegetables back to the skillet and add the pineapple chunks. Stir well, then cover the skillet.

Cook for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes, until the pork is cooked through and vegetables have reached desired doneness.

Stir in the green onion and sesame seeds. Taste the sweet and sour pork for flavor and add sea salt and/or liquid aminos or sriracha to taste.

Not at all! You can make this without food coloring. One of the advantage of making homemade anything is that you dont have to include the junk ingredients that the store-bought stuff often uses. The red food coloring is purely for aesthetics and tastes exactly the same without it. If you prefer the red color but dont want to use chemicals in your food there are natural food coloring options and I provide a link to one option in the recipe card below.

Can You Make Sweet And Sour Chicken Ahead Of Time

While this sweet and sour chicken recipe is best when it is first made, there are some things you can do to make it easier for busy nights.

  • Prep the gluten-free chicken batter ahead of time. – You can prep the batter a day ahead and keep it in a sealed container in the fridge.
  • Make the sauce ahead of time. – I find it easiest to mix the sauce without the vegetables and let it simmer on the stove just until it starts to thicken. Then when I am cooking dinner, it takes less time to finish once the sauce is added to the vegetables.
  • Make it all ahead of time and reheat. – This isn’t my favorite option, but it does work. You can completely batter and fry the chicken and make the sauce ahead of time.
  • I recommend storing the battered chicken and the sauce separately if you do this.
  • I find the gluten-free battered chicken gets crispier if it’s reheated in the oven or air fryer without the sauce.
  • Warming up the sauce and then combining it with the chicken will give the best results when making it ahead of time.

Faq + Tips And Tricks For The Best Healthy Sweet And Sour Chicken

WORK IN BATCHES TO COOK THE CHICKEN. For the best results, I recommend cooking your chicken in batches. When the pan is less crowded, the air circulates better, which means crispier chicken. When the pan is more crowded, your chicken is more likely to steam, which means less crisp chicken.

CAN I USE FRESH PINEAPPLE INSTEAD? You totally can, youll just also need to make sure you buy some pineapple juice to use for the sauce.

WANT MORE VEGGIES? Feel free to try mixing and matching! I sometimes toss in some halved sugar snap or snow peas when I have them on hand.

A TRICK FOR CRISPIER CHICKEN. For crispier chicken, you can try the same method I use for my Healthy Orange Chickencoating the chicken in a bit of cornstarch or arrowroot before cooking. The tiny bit of starch on the outside crisps up a bit when cooked and still saves you the deep-frying!

Is Sweet And Sour Sauce Traditionally Chinese

It can be hard knowing what is authentic Chinese food and what isnt. More than half of the offerings at an American-Chinese buffet would be unrecognizable to someone from China! Dishes like moo shu pork, orange chicken, egg foo yung, General Tsos chicken, and even deep-fried egg rolls were created in the West to appeal to Western palates.

What about egg roll sauce though? Well, sweet and sour sauce is linked to Hunan, a Chinese province. It was originally a condiment for meat, fish and vegetables.

A similar sauce can be traced back to the Guangdong province but its possible the sauces were created around the same time. Pineapple and pear were used to add sweetness to dishes in some Eastern Chinese provinces. Molasses, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and honey arent traditional ingredients but they are found in Westernized sauce recipes.

These days a lot of dishes are more fusion food creations than traditional recipes. Thats the great thing about cooking though. You can experiment with different ingredients, dishes and cooking styles from various places and come up with new recipes. I love adapting deep-fried recipes for my air fryer. I also love trying new twists on classic dishes and discovering brand new favourites that way.

Storing Leftovers And Reheating

This gluten-free sweet and sour chicken recipe actually makes delicious leftovers. The gluten-free batter does not fall off the chicken once it has sauce on it. This means you can enjoy your delicious Chinese leftovers like you would if they came from a local takeout spot.

  • If you prefer your chicken to maintain that nice crunch that has come directly out of the oil after the batter is fried. In that case, I suggest only tossing enough chicken in enough sauce that you know you are going to eat and storing the chicken and sauce separately.
  • To reheat, you can toss the chicken into an oven or air fryer at 350 degrees for about 10-15 minutes or until it is warmed through.
  • You can also warm it up in the microwave in 30-second increments until warm if you prefer.
