Gluten Free Not So Sloppy Joes

Healthy Sloppy Joe Recipe | Gluten Free, Paleo

I just returned from the San Francisco Bay Area where I participated in the Gluten Free Allergen FreeExpo. While I really enjoy seeing other gluten free cookbook authors and bloggers, what I love the most is meeting the people who read my blog and make my recipes. After all, YOU are why I do what I do!

I am always encouraged when I meet readers who tell me they like the simplicity of my recipes. If I ever worry about not being foodie enough those worries are put to rest when I meet real people. It seems that most people are like me they want to eat real food that they can make in a real kitchen and get on the table quickly.

This recipe is for possibly one of the most un-foodie recipes Sloppy Joes.

Sloppy Joes were one of my go-to meals when the boys were growing up, its quick, inexpensive and everyone loved them. My only problem with them was they were so darn sloppy!

I would cringe when the boys would pick up a burger bun piled with the meat filling and all that sloppiness would run down their little arms, onto the place mats, table and eventually the floor. The boys were thrilled but me, not so much!

The verdict? My hubby wolfed down two before I could even snap a photo! Since he has the palate of an 8 year old boy, I say this is a giant thumbs up as far as kid-friendly, quick meals go! As for me, I have always been a fan of the taste of Sloppy Joes but not the sloppiness so I think this is a win-win recipe!

Can I Substitute Turkey Or Chicken For Beef

Yes! In fact, you can substitute any ground meat, including bison, elk or venison in this dish! Or if you are vegetarian, try a plant based protein as well.

Increase leaner meats to 2 pounds, also increasing Worcestershire sauce to 2 tablespoons its a bit more bland, especially if not making with bacon. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Quick And Easy Gluten

Previously, Ive shared my unprocessed Homemade Sloppy Joes Without a Mix here on gfe. That recipe is not difficult to make and the resulting Sloppy Joes are definitely delicious. However, there are times when I want an even simpler version of Sloppy Joes, these Quick and Easy Gluten-Free Sloppy Joes.

This recipe doesnt use a Sloppy Joe package mix but instead uses ingredients that I like to keep on hand in my gfe pantry. The gfe pantry is one of the keys to living gluten free easilygfe.

A well-stocked pantry enables me to make delicious recipes whenever the mood hits and keeps me from making unnecessary trips to the grocery store. It also keeps me from having to buy pricier processed foods, including gluten-free specialty items.

Not only are such products more expensive, they also cant compare to the homemade versions. Even when the homemade versions are as simple, quick, and easy as these Sloppy Joes!

We love these Sloppy Joes for an easy meal any time, especially on a weeknight. Mr. GFE used to love his Sloppy Joe on a hamburger bun with a slice of cheese. Son and I usually enjoy them as open-faced sandwiches on gluten-free bagels , as shown here.

Sometimes I like mine in a bowl with either chips or French fries on the side. Like most Sloppy Joes, these tend to have a slightly sweet vibe to them, so whatever sides you serve them with can both balance and complement them.

Kitchen Skill: How To Chop A Bell Pepper

The first time you have to chop a bell pepper for a recipe can be a bit confusing. Just how do you break it down? Start by slicing around the shoulder of the pepper to release the stem and seedpod. Once the cut is made, twist the top and the body in opposite directions. The seeds should come out attached to the stem. If they dont, just run your fingers along the sides and pull the seedpod out.

Set the pepper upright and using a sharp knife, slice down using the white ribs as guides, running your knife between two of the ribs. Move to the next section and slice down, repeating until all the sections have been removed. This separates the meat of the pepper, leaving the ribs standing upright still attached to the bottom.

Stack the pieces of pepper with the inside surface facing up. Slice them all lengthwise into 1/4-inch strips. Holding the stack together with your fingers, cut the opposite direction in 1/4-inch slices to create a perfect dice .

  • Reserve about 2 tablespoons of bacon grease if you used turkey bacon or precooked bacon, simply add 2 tablespoons of olive or vegetable oil.
  • Heat skillet to medium-high heat and cook onions and peppers about 5 minutes until soft and slightly caramelized. Add minced garlic the last minute and stir until fragrant. Scoot veggies to the side, adding ground meat to skillet.
  • Break meat apart into chunks to brown, dont break into tiny pieces, keep some larger, that will help keep the sandwich together better. Brown until almost all pink is gone. About 5-6 minutes.

    Gluten Free Sloppy Jose Sandwiches

    26 August 2016

While I am learning from some of the best in the business today at TechMunch in San Francisco I thought I would share one of my favorites with you When Gourmet Gardens Chef Shannon and I were kicking around ideas for fun new recipes to make with their products, we wanted something that would be perfect for easy weeknight meals. I mentioned Sloppy Joes. Then we both said, how about a Mexican version? and the Sloppy Jose was born!

When the kids head back to school, it is hectic getting everything ready, finding all the required supplies, buying new clothes. And once school starts, everyone has to get settled into the routine again. I was always nervous about the first day of school, even though I every year I was in classes with all the same kids I grew up with. It seems silly now, but at the time it was quite traumatic. I needed comforting foods to help me ease back into the school year schedule and Sloppy Joes were one of my favorites.

Sloppy Joes have been a staple in our home for my entire life. Quick and easy to make and packed with protein that helps keep hungry growing kids full, they were one of my moms go-to meals. By the time I joined my brothers at the dinner table , the boys already knew how delicious they were and begged Mom to make them. It didnt take me long to learn that anything they wanted, I wanted too!
