How Do You Make The Gluten

Making Streit’s Gluten Free Matzo Ball & Soup Mix

As you can see with the last two photos, you can make your potato-based matzo balls large or small. That’s up to you! Smaller matzo balls are great for kids, while larger ones are classic and authentic. Smaller ones also boil up super quick and are ready to be served in a flash. Once your matzo balls are formed, chilled , and boiled , you add them to the soup you’ll be serving them in. To keep this soup vegan, I went with a simple herby vegetable broth with the addition of some carrots, celery, onion, and dill. You can add whichever veggies you want to your broth and in whatever amounts you want as well.

Tips For Really Good Matzo Soup

Use bone-in chicken pieces. Were making broth here! The different pieces of chicken, fat and bones, not all boneless breasts, will create serious flavor.

Fresh dill will be your BFF. Dill is just quintessential in a classic matzo ball soup. If you don like dill, parsley would be a good addition.

Dont skimp on salt and pepper. Keep it handy!

Add the matzo balls when serving. I do not recommend cooking the matzo balls and soup together.

If adding noodles, wait until serving to add, too!

I’ve worked on this recipe for a year now! I always loved matzo ball soup growing up and I missed it dearly. Many vegan variations use wheat-based for matzo meal, while many gluten-free versions still use egg. Vegan and gluten-free versions of matzo ball soup that I came across used quinoa flakes or chickpea flour, but I chose to use potato after seeing Streit’s gluten-free matzo ball soup mix. Their matzo ball mix in the box is potato based , but a potato based matzo ball sounded like a good idea for a homemade version. After I perfected the potato-based matzo ball, I found out that “potato kneidlach” are actually a type of soup dumpling that is used in some versions of matzo ball soup! Low and behold, I was on to something and it happened to already be “a thing”.

Why I Use A Mix Vs Making My Own

Now you know Im all about making things homemade, after all, this is a food website! But Im also about short cuts and sourcing good quality ingredients.

What Ive found is that gluten free matzo meal on its own has additives and things in it, so why not doctor up a mostly clean matzo ball mix and save ourselves a headache!

I have found Streits gluten-free matzo ball mix and Yehuda gluten-free matzo ball mix to be the cleanest, and with the tips below , theyll be fluffy and delicious!

Can Matzo Balls Be Made With Saltine Crackers

To make the matzo balls, blitz the soda crackers in a food processor or blender until you have fine crumbs. If you wanted, you could also use the more traditional matzo meal in place of the soda crackers. Refrigerate the matzo mix for approximately 30 minutes so the crackers can fully absorb the wet ingredients.

Can You Make Matzo Balls Without Matzo Meal

Gluten-free Matzo Ball Soup Recipe by The Deglutenizer

If youre cooking a Jewish recipe that calls for matzo meal, then its possible to finish the dish without it. Ingredients like matzo cake meal, quinoa flour, or almond meal will make useful replacements. Plain breadcrumbs, coconut macaroons, or semolina are also great substitutes if youre not cooking during Passover.

First things first: When it comes to either regular or gluten-free matzo balls, I am a die hard fan of the sinker. I realize that might be an unpopular opinion, but its what I grew up with. If you ask me, my moms matzo balls are the best, but if you prefer a floater, the recipe that follows is probably more your style.

Is Matzo Meal The Same As Flour

Matzo meal is simply ground matzo. It is used as a substitute for flour or breadcrumbs during Passover, but it has a coarser texture, in part due to the fact it is made from a product that has already been baked. Matzo cake meal is ground matzo, but the texture is much finer and akin more to flour than breadcrumbs.

What Is In Traditional Matzo Ball Soup

For starters, basic “matzo balls” are made out of matzo meal , eggs, water, oil or chicken fat. The matzo balls are boiled and served in simple chicken soup or vegetable soup which may consist of broth and vegetables like carrots, celery, dill, even parsnips. Matzo balls can either be light and fluffy, called “floaters”, or heavier and dense, called “sinkers”.

    Is Matzo Ball Soup Vegan

This Vegan Matzo Ball Soup is delicious and satisfying and tastes just like Bubbe used to make. But learning how to make it vegan was a little tough. Generally theyre made with eggs and schmaltzchicken fat. And then of course the broth is usually made from chicken bones/meat.

    Expert Tips And Recipe Faq:

    Who invented matzo balls?

I have always wondered this but never thought to look it up. If you are curious too, here is a brief story: Matzo balls were invented in 1838 by a man named Isaac Singer. He was a clever Frenchman who created a matzo dough machine. This was fantastic because it made making the matzo balls a faster and easier process. I am not sure how this matzo dough machine would work for gluten free matzo dough…but it certainly would speed up the process!

Can I make matzo balls the night before?

Yes, you can make the matzo ball soup the night before. You can prepare the soup as directed then place it into an airtight container. It will last 3-4 days in the fridge. Then reheat it on the stovetop with warm heat until it’s hot all the way through.

    Can I freeze this soup?

Yes, you can freeze matzo ball soup. Let this matzo ball soup recipe cool down completely, then pour it into a freezer-safe container with a lid. Just fill the container about full, so there is room when it freezes. The matzo ball soup will last around 3 months in the freezer.

    Does matzo meal have gluten?

Unfortunately, matzo meal does have gluten. You need to make sure to buy matzo meal that is specially labeled gluten free.

    Recipe Step By Step Directions:

Step 1: Add the matzo meal, dill, egg, seasonings, and oil to a bowl. Mix to blend.

Step 2: Your matzo ball dough should be somewhat firm. Cover the bowl in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Remove from the refrigerator and form into balls.

Step 3: Bring a pot of water to boil and then drop the matzo balls into the boiling water. The matzo balls will drop to the bottom. Keep cooking and they will inflate and rise to the top.

Step 4: When the matzo balls are puffed up and floating, cook 5 more minutes then remove them and add them to your chicken soup.

This soup is served at many Jewish holidays including Passover, Rosh Hashanah, and Hanukkah.

    These Light + Fluffy Gluten

People tend to have strong opinions about the perfect consistency of matzo balls. My theory is that it just depends what you grew up with. Still, even though Im Team Sinker, I found myself really loving these light and fluffy balls, to my own surprise.

I created this recipe because someone on Instagram asked if I had a lower-carb Matzo Ball recipe. The ones that I have created in the past are potato and/or cassava based, making them extra carby. I havent calculated the macros on these, since I never do that. But based on the ingredients, I am guessing that these are lower carb than a potato or cassava based matzo ball, and also lower carb than traditional ones.

It sounded like a fun challenge to me, so I got to work. I have vague memories of making matzo balls out of only almond flour back when I first became gluten-free, and they were good but not I wasnt in love with the texture. For these, I used a combo of almond flour and garbanzo bean flour and was really happy with the result.

The Key To A Fluffy Matzo Ball

Manischewitz Gluten Free Matzo Ball Mix

The key to a light and fluffy matzo ball is the addition of baking powder, which contains sodium bicarbonate, a leavening agent.

Baking powder, in general, is know for lightening the texture of baked goods because it releases carbon dioxide gas into the food, resulting in the formation of bubbles that expand the mixture.

Adding a little baking powder will fluff up those matzo balls, making them perfectly palatable for Passover.

Daniel Gritzer at Serious Eats experimented with a variety of ways to make matzo balls, and he tested a variety of techniques to see what netted the best matzo balls. He found that a little baking powder goes a long way in fluffing up those matzo balls.

You might be wondering, is baking powder even Kosher for Passover? This article in the New York Times will set your mind at ease. According to prominent, orthodox rabbis, prohibition against leavening bread is different than the prohibition against the use of leavening agents such as baking powder and baking soda.

Perhaps the most observant Jews wont touch my matzo balls, but for my family, and for most Jewish families across the U.S., a little baking powder enables us to enjoy this meaningful ritual in a delicious way.
