Trader Joes Gluten Free Frozen Pie Crust Reviewed

Frozen pie crusts can be hit-or-miss when it comes to flavor and quality. Some are bland, while others have a ncie buttery flavor. Some are too thick to bake in the time needed for the filling to bake, while others are just right. Trader Joes stocks frozen pie crust dough that you can roll out and fit to any pie dish you might have, but this year they added a new pie crust option to their freezer case: Trader Joes Gluten Free Pie Crust.

It is an all butter crust made with a blend of rice flour, tapioca flour and cornstarch as the base. The frozen crust is unbaked and comes already shaped to a 9-inch aluminum pie plate. It has instructions for use in a single and double crust pie , as well as for parbaking the crust on its own. The crust needs to be defrosted for about 10 minutes before going into the oven which I did while my oven was preheating. I filled my test crust with a homemade pumpkin pie filling and popped it into the oven.

This crust is gluten free and that makes it an excellent choice for those with dietary restrictions, but it is delicious enough that I would recommend it to anyone looking for an easy pie crust option this season. I know that Ill be stocking a few in my freezer for times when I want to throw a pie together on short notice!

Structure notes: A little bit of shrinkage with pre-baking, as expected, crust held pumpkin pie perfectly well.

RECOMMEND. When I first reviewed the Wholly Wholesome Gluten-free crust in 2017, I gave it a very poor rating it tasted bad and fell apart. Since then, the company has reworked their recipe and now I can wholeheartedly recommend this crust if you are looking for a gluten-free option. The crust is delicious and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and a regular flour crust.

How To Make Gluten Free Pie Crust

While one might think that making gluten free crust is a challenge compared to regular pie crust, it really isnt. The primary difference between regular and gluten free versions is the ingredients you use. Otherwise, the process is nearly the same.

To start, you need to make a flax egg, which is simply a mixture of ground flaxseed and water. The flax meal absorbs the water creating a gel the consistency of egg white. This is a wonderful component to add to many vegan desserts where regular eggs wont work.

Next, you whisk your dry ingredients together, including the coconut flour, cocoa powder, sweetener, and salt. Then, you stir in the flax egg with the coconut oil, and vanilla. Cocoa powder is a perfect gluten free chocolate component adding chocolatey depth to the pastry.

If you arent a fan of rolling out pie dough, you will love the next part which involves crumbling and pressing the mixture into a pie pan. For a neater finish, though, you can refrigerate the gluten free dough to set it before rolling it out into a uniform disk between parchment paper sheets.

Then you just bake it for 15 minutes. After baking let the crust cool before adding any fillings.

Can I Make This Crust In Advance

Yes, you definitely can! Simply follow the recipe through baking and allow to cool completely. Next, you can wrap the gluten free crust thoroughly with plastic wrap or place in a sealable bag until ready to use. The crust should keep fresh for up to 3 days like this. If you leave it any longer, the oils in the dough may soften the crust so that you dont have the same crispness.

If desired, you could freeze the baked gluten free crust as well. In this case, you may want to bake your crust in foil pie plates so that you can keep your regular ones free for other baking. Simply place the entire shell with the pie plate in an airtight container or sealable freezer bag and freeze until ready to use.

The crust should keep for a few months in the freezer, but the flavours will deteriorate over time so it will be best to use it within the first 3 months. Before using your gluten free pastry, just thaw it before filling it with your favourite vegan, gluten-free, or paleo fillings.
