What Ice Cream Brands Are Gluten Free

Testing Popular Ice Cream Brands for Gluten

I decided to test five well-known ice cream brands to see if they were free from gluten.

Before I tested any ice cream brand, I first inspected the ingredient label to make sure it appeared to be gluten free , and was free of any manufacturer allergen disclosure statements.

I noticed that some brands have a few flavors that are gluten free, while other flavors contain full-on gluten! For example, just because one flavor of Ben & Jerrys is gluten free, it doesnt mean all Ben & Jerrys ice cream flavors are gluten free. You must read the label of each individual carton every time.

Heres how each ice cream brand fared when put to the gluten detecting test :

What About When I Go Out For Ice Cream

If your friends want to grab some ice cream from a shop this summer, refer to our guide on Eating Out Gluten Free for tips. Tell your server you have celiac or gluten intolerance and need to avoid anything with wheat, barley or rye and most oats. Ask your server about serving policies to find out whether the ice cream could be cross contaminated, and ask them to change their gloves and use a different ice cream scoop for you.

Tips For Ordering Ice Cream At Stores And Restaurants

When ordering ice cream at the dessert stores, check carefully if the sellers use one spoon or tools to take different types of ice cream to avoid cross-contamination. If it is the case, gently explain that you are sensitive to gluten and ask the seller to use a separated ice cream scoop.

If you are sensitive to gluten, avoid eating ice cream cones as they are made of gluten-containing ingredients. Most ice cream stores have two options: cup and cone, so tell the seller to serve your dessert on a cup or plate.

Before ordering a specific ice cream flavor, you should check its ingredients by asking the seller or searching online via your smartphone. It ensures that your ice cream is gluten-free and safe to eat if you have Celiac disease or allergies.

We Couldnt Tell That We Werent Eating The Real Thing

Human adults aren’t supposed to drink milk. You’d never know it by the amount of yogurt, milk, coffee creamers, and other dairy-filled treats that fill our fridges, but scientists are pretty certain we should avoid it. It has something to do with enzymes and being old and not being able to digest it and other buzzkills like that. We could probably give up plain-old milk and yogurt, but ice cream? Haven’t we suffered enough?

Luckily, there are some alternatives. You’ve probably seen non-dairy ice cream thanks to brands like Halo Top and Ben & Jerry’s that have cashed in on the alternative milk trend. But between chalky or icy textures and too much nutty flavor from the base, there’s a lot that can go wrong when trying to make cream-less ice cream.

So in the interest of helping our dairy-free friends, we cracked open dozens of pints to fill you in on the non-dairy ice cream that still actually tastes like ice cream. With most of them, we couldnt even tell that we werent eating the real thing.

Steve’s Burnt Sugar Vanilla

7 Gluten Free and Vegan Ice Cream Brands That Will Blow Even Dairy ...

Brooklyn-based Steves Ice Cream makes a variety of Brooklyn-sounding, dairy-rich flavors but it also shows some love to the dairy-lessagain, with flavors that could only come from Brooklyn. We got our hands on Burnt Sugar Vanilla, which features rich, gooey veins of caramel-colored liquid sugar and tastes a lot like a mix between the caramel of a Twix and the vanilla ice cream inside an ice cream bar.

Are Ice Cream Cones Gluten

Most ice cream cones are not gluten-free. Both sugar cones and waffle cones typically use flour as a base, meaning most of them contain wheat products. But for those suffering from celiac disease or gluten sensitivities, there are many gluten-free ice cream cones that you can find at the grocery store or online!

For each of these gluten-free ice cream cone brands, Ill be sure to clarify whether or not the product is certified gluten-free or just labeled gluten-free. The difference is that certified gluten-free products have to meet certain standards whereas non-certified products just have to be free from gluten-containing ingredients, such as wheat, barley, and rye.

If you have celiac disease, you should only purchase certified gluten-free cones, but if you are gluten-free for other reasons, feel free to try any of the products on this list!

To find the brand that is best for you, read through the descriptions for each one to find out what popular grocery stores carry their products, what varieties they offer, whether or not the products are certified gluten-free, and if you can buy them online!

Product ingredients can change at any time. Before you buy, make sure to check the most recent product certifications and look for any allergen warnings on the label.

Is Ice Cream Dairy Free

Ice cream is generally not dairy-free, as it is made with milk and cream which are animal products.

There are loads of dairy-free ice cream options on the market these days. These are made from different dairy-free milk alternatives, like cashew milk, coconut milk, soy milk, rice milk, and just about any other plant-based milk you could think of.

There are plenty of dairy-free ice cream brands available at the grocery store, however they tend to be on the expensive side compared to dairy ice creams.

I personally prefer to make my own dairy-free ice cream at home so that I can control the ingredients as well as keep the cost down.

Ive actually found that I can make about double the amount of dairy-free ice cream for half the cost of it would to buy a pint of the same flavor at the grocery store.

Ask Them To Use A Clean Scoop Out Of A Fresh Container

Best ice cream. Dairy free gluten free and vegan.

Another option to ensure no cross contact with gluten is to ask your server to use a clean ice cream scoop and scoop out of a fresh container, and use clean gloves.

Of course, if you ask this of someone, my opinion is that it would be very generous to tip well for going to the effort of keeping you safe.

What Happens If You Eat Too Much Ice Cream

Ice cream is a delicious dessert that adds more flavor to our lives. It is a rich source of carbs and calories to help your body replenish energy. But is it healthy to consume ice cream regularly?

Dairy products like milk and cream contain a high percentage of saturated fat and cholesterol. These substances make your body more prone to heart diseases and diabetes. The ice cream manufacturers also add too much sugar and additional flavors that are addictive.

Just like sugary foods and smoking, it is tough to stop eating ice cream once you have been addicted. Too much sugar intake makes you gain weight faster and affects your brain functions.

For these reasons, overeating ice cream can negatively impact your health.

Eating too much ice cream will have severe effects on your body.

Is Breyers Ice Cream Gluten Free

Many Breyers ice creams are labeled gluten free, which means they contain less than 20 ppm of gluten and meet the FDAs gluten-free labeling requirements.

Not all Breyers products are gluten free, and Breyers does not claim to have a dedicated gluten-free manufacturing facility.

On the Breyers website, Breyers says, stringent criteria are used to ensure that the products that claim to be gluten free are handled properly.

At the BREYERS® facility, there are systems in place to prevent cross-contact of gluten in products that make a gluten-free claim. They include employee allergen training, ingredient segregation, cleaning procedures and production planning. The gluten-free program within the factory includes validation and verification activities which include allergen testing on both the product and the production lines.

Here is how Breyers Mint Chocolate Chip fared against the Nima Sensor. Yep, Nima is all smiles again!

Tips For Making This Christmas Ice Cream

Use quality ingredients â When making homemade ice cream, youâll want to make sure you are using high quality ingredients for the best outcome.

Chill out â If possible, always start with chilled ingredients. This is important for homemade no-churn ice cream recipes and ice cream maker recipes.

Donât skimp on the fat â High fat milks and creams are essential when making homemade ice cream. Opting for a low-fat option often leads to icy ice creams and inconsistency in the texture.

Donât go crazy with the add-ins â If youâre adding in additional ingredients, pick one or two and make sure they are chopped into pieces no larger than a blueberry or pea.

Is Soft Serve Ice Cream Gluten

As a general rule, soft service ice cream is gluten-free as long as it doesnt contain cookies or other gluten-containing ingredients.

Most soft serve ice cream is a single flavor, then later topped with ice cream toppings or loaded into ice cream cones. Both of these will either have gluten or the potential for cross contamination with gluten.

Assuming you stay away from gluten-containing toppings and cones, soft serve is generally safe for people on a gluten-free diet when enjoyed out of a cup.

Why Is My Ice Cream Hard To Scoop

You should see in the instructions that I recommend letting the ice cream sit at room temperature before scooping. Directly from the freezer, it will be too hard to scoop, but should be easy after thawing a bit.

Commercial ice creams typically include preservatives which allow them to be softer when frozen. Since our homemade gluten free ice cream doesn’t include any chemicals, we need to use time to get it soft enough.
