Oatly: Chocolate Oat Milk

Review: Chobani Oat Milk!

Oat milk is a pretty healthy drink that is naturally gluten-free, but when manufacturers add flavors like chocolate or vanilla, they also typically add sugar to make these flavors taste sweeter.

That’s why Jay Cowin, registered nutritionist and director of formulations for ASYSTEM, ranks Oatly brand chocolate oat milk as one of the worst oat milks. It has 16 grams of sugar, which is more than you’d find in a glazed donut.

Oat milks can often have great qualities to balance out the sugar content, but Cowin noted, “The fiber and protein content for this chocolate drink is about average for that of an oat milk.”

Almond Breeze Unsweetened Original Almondmilk

This cows milk alternative is one of the most popular options and for good reason. Aside from its lack of protein, unsweetened almond milk only provides 30 calories, only 1 gram of carbohydrate, and lots of beneficial nutrients like healthy fats, vitamins A, D, E, and minerals magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, and iron. Almond milk is also naturally gluten-free.

  • Where Can You Buy It

Especially in the past year, oatmilk has become increasingly available at both health food stores and major chains such as Target, Whole Foods, Kroger, Walmart, Safeway, Giant, and Wegmans, as well as both large and small coffee shops around the US, Canada, and the world.

Brands include Quaker Oat Beverage, Elmhurst, Califa Oat Barista Blend, Pacific, Planet Oat, Mooala, Oat Dream, Coffee mate oat milk creamer, Silk, and Oatly .

Starbucks now offers it it in select UK and US locations, and So Delicious has even come out with oatmilk ice cream and oatmilk yogurt!

What Makes Chobani Different From Regular Yogurts

We make our yogurt the authentic way, never adding any thickeners. Instead, we use a centuries-old straining technique to remove excess liquid.

Whilst most regular yogurts require one cup of milk to make one cup of yogurt, it takes three cups of milk to make one cup of Chobani! This is why Chobani is so thick, creamy and has almost two times more protein per serve than most regular yogurts.

Gluten Free Oat Milk Not Using Purity Protocol

On my never-ending search for purity protocol oat milk, Ill be updating this whenever I can confirm or deny major brands and what oat sources they use. Stay tuned!

Califia FarmsAll of our products are gluten-free according to FDA guidelines, which requires products have under 20ppm of gluten. Our Oatmilks are processed in Bakersfield, California and made with whole rolled oats grown in North America. Although oats are naturally gluten free, they may come into contact with wheat, barley, and rye as the supply moves from the fields to the mills. Our vendors have to guard against adventitious contamination with these gluten-containing grains and employ proprietary cleaning and sorting technologies that ensures not only adherence to government standards but goes beyond that to provide an ingredient that surpasses government standards for Gluten-Free. Unfortunately, sorting is necessary in order to ensure there are controls in place to prevent adventitious contamination with gluten-containing grains that would surpass the maximum threshold level for sensitivity by celiacs and gluten-intolerant individuals.

Oatly I confirmed this in person at Expo West, and their website claims they use Grain Millers .

What Is Required For A Product To Be Considered Gluten

In order for a manufacturer to label their oat milk as gluten-free, they must meet certain criteria set out by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration . Per the FDAs gluten-free labeling guidelines, a product cannot contain any gluten-containing ingredients and must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten in order to label themselves as gluten-free. Some research evidence has suggested that most individuals with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity can tolerate trace amounts without having adverse reactions. This is the basis upon which the FDA allows a product to be labeled gluten-free. With this in mind, lets review oat milks gluten status together.

Many Brands Are Contaminated With Gluten

Gluten is a group of proteins found in wheat, rye, and barley.

While its safe for most people to eat, it inflames and damages the lining of the small intestine in people with celiac disease and possibly those with non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Thus, anyone with these conditions must strictly avoid gluten .

Oats are naturally gluten-free. However, because theyre often grown near wheat and processed in facilities that also handle wheat products, theyre frequently cross-contaminated with gluten .

Thus, oat milk is likewise susceptible to contamination.

A Canadian study in 133 oat samples discovered that 88% were contaminated with more than 20 parts per million of gluten the general cutoff for a food to be considered gluten-free (

If you cant consume gluten, you should only buy oat milk thats certified gluten-free.

    summary

Although naturally gluten-free, oats are frequently cross-contaminated with gluten. Therefore, theres a good chance that your oat milk isnt gluten-free unless its certified as such.

Isnt The Plain Zero Sugar Too

Chobani Product Review Oat Milk – Coffee Creamer – Yogurt Drink – Flip Yogurt | 101 Food Travel

According to a ruling against the manufacturer Oatly, when an enzymatic process is used to make oatmilk, it breaks down the oat starch into simple sugars, and effectively creates sugars that must be claimed as added sugars. Chobani mills old-style, but they also use an enzymatic process to break down the oats. This is why their Plain flavors are effectively free of sugar ingredients, but they have a high added sugars claim on the nutrition facts. But, theyve reportedly tweaked the process so they could create oatmilk with no sugars at all. But please note that their newer zero sugar variety is not made with organic oats.

    Where To Buy Oat Milk

All the oat milk in this review was purchased around the Tampa Bay area. Obviously, there are regional grocery stores and brands not available here, and thats okay. Comment below with your fav oat milk brand + store so we can try to include it next year! My friend Erin shopped at the following stores to get as many oat milk brands as possible:

These granola bars will keep the family happy all day long. They pack nicely in a daypack or cooler as well. A burst of energy to keep the adventures going.

    Jens Coconut Granola

Use this incredibly balanced granola as a breakfast with your fav oat milk, or as a nutritious snack on the go. It can be paired with fresh berries, yogurt, as well as munched on on its own. Its seriously good, and can be found in the Fresh Start Autumn 21-day cleanse.

One of the many great things about green smoothies is that theyre so customizable. Next time you make one, try swapping the liquid base for oat milk to produce a creamier, thicker smoothie. Oat milk can be a great added protein, as well as a thickener for that delicious smoothie bowl.

How To Choose The Best Oat Milk

If you fit the bill for someone looking to consume a plant-based alternative to dairy milk, it’s important to know what else you might be getting when you grab a container off the supermarket shelf. Registered dietitian Sarah Rueven, MS, RDN, CDN, founder of Rooted Wellness, says the best oat milks are made with just oats and water, without the added ingredients companies claim improve the taste and texture.

Can You Heat Up Oatmilk Or Cook The Oats First

Most commercial brands of oatmeal milk can be heated just like any other nondairy milk.

The homemade version will thicken when heated, but Ive found that adding the optional oil prevents it from thickening too much to use as a creamer or in an oat milk latte.

Because it gets thicker when heated, this is a great vegan milk choice for sauces, gravies, or any recipe that you want to thicken naturally.

As for cooking the oats first, you absolutely can.

Years ago, one of my favorite breakfasts was cooked oatmeal that Id blend after cooking for added creaminess. You can still find these recipes on my site if you search

As another fun idea, you can also toast the oats before turning them into milk.

Thrive Market Organic Original Unsweetened Oat Beverage

Even grocery retailers are coming up with their own plant-based milk products, and e-commerce grocery Thrive Market has one of the most nutritious oat milks out there.

“One of the best oat milk brands is Thrive Market’s Organic Oat Milk,” said Trista Best, registered dietitian at Balance One Supplements. “The ingredients panel is one of the shortest among other oat milk brands with no preservatives, added sugar, or oils.”

There are only two ingredients: water and organic oats. While there aren’t any added sugars, there are 13 grams of sugar in this oat milk.

Oat Milk Compared To Other Milks

Compared to cows milk, oat milk tends to have a similar calorie content, but has much less protein. In addition, oat milk has more carbohydrate per serving when compared to many of its plant-based counterparts like almond, coconut, and soy. Most oat milk is fortified with nutrients because many of the beneficial nutrients found naturally in oats are lost in the oat milk production process. Because of fortification, however, many of these nutrients are reintroduced to the milk and thus, oat milk boasts a pretty impressive nutrient profile.

All in all, oat milk serves as a great alternative for those who cannot consume dairy or nut-based products. While it may have some nutritional shortcomings, it does provide some benefit through its vitamin and mineral profile and soluble fiber content. It is ultimately left to the consumer to determine which milk alternative is best for their health and nutrition-related goals.
