Culver’s: Georges Chili Supreme

Vegan Sweet and Sour Chicken Recipe + Homemade Gluten Free Chinese take out

When much of your reputation is built on breaded and fried cheese curds, you’re not exactly a staple in the GF community. Yet surprisingly, Culver’s has several options. At another chain, the Cranberry Bacon Bleu Salad or Baja Chicken Enchilada Soup might be the recommendation here, but instead it s George’s Chili Supreme. because George was nice enough to put a “secret blend of peppery spices” in his slow cooker, and no gluten.

How To Talk To A Server About Your Gluten

The best way to discuss your gluten-free needs with a waiter or server is to try to speak with someone who speaks your language fluently and understands your requests.

When youre sure you can communicate effectively, explain that you need to find gluten-free options and ask for a gluten-free menu.

If there isnt one available, you may want to ask them to point out on the menu which dishes use rice or rice noodles and no soy or dark colored sauces.

Another great way to communicate with your server is to bring a gluten-free restaurant card with you.

I found some great ones from Celiac Travel and they even have an app called Gluten Free Restaurant Cards to help you share your needs in different languages. You can show it to them so they can speak with the cooks about your options.

One other strategy I use is to look at menus online before I head out to a restaurant. This feels important to me, so I have time to review what my options are and take my time figuring out if theres a possibility that I can make it work.

I know it doesnt sound very spontaneous, and its quite boring to know exactly what you will order before you even step foot in a restaurant, but when you have dietary restrictions, thats the name of the game.

Look ahead to be prepared or find another restaurant to go to.

Is Chinese Food Gluten

For a quick and simple answer, a lot of Chinese dishes are not gluten-free.

There are plenty of places that gluten can show up in many Chinese food dishes, like breading on meats, soy sauce, and all dark-colored sauces like teriyaki, fish sauce, or duck sauce, etc.

Youll also want to be aware of cross contamination between ingredients that contain gluten and those that dont, as well as the pots that theyre cooked in.

However, that doesnt mean that there are no options for a gluten-free diet. Lets go over some tips on what and how to order.

Be Wary Of Sharing Dishes At The Table

If youre the only one at the table who needs to eat gluten-free, be aware of the other dishes at the table.

Its traditional to share dishes among the table when enjoying Chinese food, but be sure to use dedicated spoons for each bowl or dish if others want to share.

This will help prevent gluten from going from one dish into your gluten-free dish, cutting down the opportunity of cross contamination.

Eating Out Gluten Free At Restaurant Chains

You see, if youre allergic to gluten or have Celiacs Disease, there are a few issues that you sometimes run into.

First, most major restaurant chains dont offer an official gluten free menu. Youll literally have to spend hours at a time looking at a restaurants nutrition and ingredients list manually crossing out unsuitable options for your diet. This is an annoying and painstaking task that should be done by no one, and I mean NO ONE.

And if restaurant does have a gluten free menu, they usually burry it in the archives of their websites where youll literally take hours of your life digging through it into you finally find the menu.

Second, if a restaurant does offer a gluten free menu the kitchen staff, servers, and management are either

  • uneducated you know that time when your server teases you with a warm basket of fresh baked bread even after you clearly tell them that you are on a gluten free diet
  • unaware of the gluten free menu sometimes staff dont even know that a gluten free menu at their restaurant even exists.
  • Third, certain restaurants are cross contamination havens I mean seriously, some restaurants you go to are so dangerous for gluten free dieters that their dining experience can be deadly.

    Its a nightmare.

So hopefully, this listing helped you out!

However, there are some things you can do and things to be aware of to make it not a total disaster.

Here are some things to keep in mind next time you find yourself at a Chinese restaurant.

    Pure Kitchen // Multiple Locations

Pure Kitchen is probably the most popular gluten-free restaurant in Ottawa. Like a lot of the others, it’s also vegan and vegetarian but they know how to make their dishes more than that. All their ingredients are fresh and they make normal options so unique but taste like the real thing. You won’t be disappointed with Pure Kitchen! I recommend the amazing onion rings.

A post shared by St. Lawrence Market

The Instagram post reads, “Starting today, indoor dining will not be permitted at the Market due to the Province of Ontario’s proof of vaccination requirements. To avoid closing all the entrances and screening each customer that comes into the Market, the indoor seating will be removed until further notice. Outdoor picnic tables will continue to be available for people who wish to eat and drink outside.”

The indoor market is a multipurpose area where many go to pick up a few choice ingredients, their whole grocery shop or just to browse around the retail vendors.

However, inside there are also plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, and food vendors to grab a bite at and enjoy while sitting down at one of the market’s indoor seating sections.

As of yesterday if you’re looking to do more than shop at St. Lawrence Market, you’ll have to take your food outside on the picnic benches.

Restaurants Desserts Grocery Stores And Catering Options For Your Gluten

Most of us know someone who is on a gluten-free diet, whether friend or family member. Choosing a Champaign-Urbana restaurant area where gluten-free friends and family can feel comfortable eating can be a challenge, but it doesnt have to be.

We first started this list in 2016, and truth be told, it has EXPLODED over time. While gluten-free food was once an anomaly in Champaign-Urbana area restaurants, now it is much more common.

We turned to the hive mind of chambanamoms.com readers to find out where they feel comfortable eating, and have the following suggestions for those with gluten-free palates.

Please note this information comes from chambanamoms.com readers and other locals, and has not been independently confirmed in most cases. Due to the pandemic, menus may have changed. Always call first when in doubt. Also: what might qualify as gluten-free for one person may not be kosher with another.

Our recommendation: Always ask to receive first-hand information regarding dietary needs and restrictions, please!
