Potatoes and sweet potatoes are completely gluten-free and are a versatile option when following a vegan gluten-free diet, as they can be used in cooking as well as sweet recipes.

TIP: Keep in mind that gluten-free baking requires more moisture than traditional recipes.

What Makes A Plant

Ive always found it helpful to include a variety of plant foods in my vegan diet. Lots of variety is important. That way it is easy for me to ensure that I get an excellent infusion of nutrition in my food. Here are the basics

Healthy Plant-based Fats

You need healthy fats such as avocado, seeds, nuts, olives, nut butter, coconut. Healthy fats have an important role in skin health, as well as in the synthesis of neurotransmitters. They are important for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K, hormone health, cell growth, and organ protection.

Healthy Plant-Based Protein

Protein is essential for a healthy body. If you are concerned about protein on a vegan diet then think about gorilla or elephants. You can easily get all your protein needs from a healthy plant-based diet. You can read about that here: Vegan Protein: The No-B.S. Guide

Restaurant dining is a minefield for people with celiac. When a customer makes a gluten-free request, the kitchen staff has to switch into high alert to avoid cross contamination: changing gloves and using separate utensils, griddles, and counter space. If a customer orders gluten-free, but the restaurant staff later sees him drinking a beer or eating a gluten-containing dessert, they may shrug off future requests. A 2019 study in The American Journal of Gastroenterology found that one in three restaurant dishes labeled gluten-free contained gluten.

Gluten And Celiac Disease

Unfortunately gluten plays havoc with some peoples digestive systems. This is especially true of people diagnosed with celiac disease, who should treat gluten as if its poison and avoid even the tiniest amounts. Among celiacs, gluten produces an allergic response that inflames the intestines and bowels. With repeated exposure to gluten, the lining of these organs breaks down, causing serious and potentially life-threatening consequences.

Like Crohns disease and rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease is an autoimmune disordermeaning that the body is attacked by its own immune system. But if youre going to suffer the misfortune of contracting an autoimmune disorder, celiac disease is clearly the best one to have. Thats because celiacs can avoid any problems by simply ridding their diets of all traces of gluten. And while that restriction is certainly a drag, countless people with more serious ailments would be delighted to trade places with someone suffering from celiac disease.

So What Ingredients Are Both Vegan And Gluten Free

Carbs: rice, corn and quinoa are all gluten-free and vegan! So while you will have to bid normal pasta farewell, you have options.

Many gluten free pasta and bread alternatives are vegan, but you should always check the label because some use egg as a binding agent in lieu of gluten.

Meat alternatives: Tofu, tempeh, quorn and soy protein are all good to go. Just avoid seitan because that is literally just made of vital wheat gluten! Again, check for use of egg as a binder, but most non-seitan meat alternatives should be fine.

Legumes: legumes as a food group have the seal of approval. A great source of vegan gluten free protein, they will be your best friend.

If you are giving up gluten for IBS reasons, maybe take the legumes slowly though, as they have also been known toahemtroublesensitive digestive tracts.

Fruit and veggies: all good, pile em on!

Milk alternatives: almost all good! Be careful with oat milk as some oats do contain gluten. The carton should specify if it is gluten free or not.

I think that you should be empowered to choose veganism AND respect any medical condition you may have. These recipes will show you how!

How To Prepare For Both

Either way, both diets are similar in their need to restrict foods and avoid cross-contamination when dining out or cooking at home. Both are important no matter the reasoning, but gluten-free is a bit more serious in that consuming gluten when you cannot tolerate it can lead to GI issues, as well as a few other side effects. So, being safe is critical.

With veganism, you still want to maintain your diet and you are restricting several major food groups, so for this diet you might want to take better care with meal planning and selecting vegan snacks that meet your macronutrient needs. You should also discuss supplementation with your doctor for a few nutrients you might be deficient in, such as iron and vitamin B12.

A Super Nutritious Plant

Plant Based Meal Plan

The recipe I am sharing today is the sort of meal I love to create with ease throughout the week. This meal covers all the bases for a nutritious plant-based meal. You basically cook the brown rice whilst making the rest of the meal.

  • Firstly, you make the salad which involves grating of the beetroot and ginger, and chopping of the apple, onion , and cauliflower. Then you dress and mix it.
  • Secondly, when cooked, you create a hotbed of rice in each bowl.
  • Thirdly, you pile a generous portion of the delicious salad on top of the rice.
  • And finally, add extras like avocado, pumpkin seed, hemp seed and enjoy!

How Do The New Plant

The new generation of veggie burgers aims to replace the beefy original with fake meat or fresher vegetables. To find out how well they do, we ran a blind tasting of six top contenders.

In just two years, food technology has moved consumers from browsing for wan veggie patties in the frozen aisle to selecting fresh plant-based burgers sold next to the ground beef.

Behind the scenes at the supermarket, giant battles are being waged: Meat producers are suing to have the words meat and burger restricted to their own products. Makers of meat alternatives like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods are vying to capture the global fast-food market, as big players like Tyson and Perdue join the fray. Environmental and food scientists are insisting that we eat more plants and less processed food. Many vegetarians and vegans say the goal is to break the habit of eating meat, not feed it with surrogates.

I would still prefer to eat something thats not lab-grown, said Isa Chandra Moskowitz, the chef at the vegan restaurant Modern Love in Omaha, where her own burger is the most popular dish on the menu. But its better for people and for the planet to eat one of those burgers instead of meat every day, if thats what they are going to do anyway.

But how do all the newcomers perform at the table?

No You Wont Starve On A Gluten

If youre eating a gluten-free diet, you may have noticed that many of the foods are already plant-based: fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and legumes. So if you are looking to adopt a gluten-free vegan diet, there are many foods to choose from.

Lets start with the basics. Gluten is the name of the proteins that are found in several grains: wheat, rye, barley, and a rye/barley hybrid called triticale. Grains that contain wheat include whole wheat, bulgur, farro, farina, spelt, graham, durum, bromated flour , kamut , and wheat berries. Wheat, rye, and barley are found in pastas, breads, and cereals, while barley is found in malt, food coloring, and brewers yeast. On a gluten-free diet, you also cannot eat couscous, which is made from semolina .

Most of the population can consume gluten without any issues. However, 1 in 100 people in the world become ill from eating foods containing gluten. This autoimmune disease is called celiac disease, sometimes also referred to as being gluten intolerant.

If you have celiac disease, consuming gluten can damage the lining of your small intestine and affect nutrient absorption, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation. Symptoms of celiac disease or gluten intolerance include diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, and an itchy rash.

Whether youre adopting a gluten-free vegan diet for health reasons or by choice, you have a lot of delicious options for foods to eat.

Do You Really Need To Go Gluten Free

BEST PLANT BASED “CHICKEN” NUGGETS Healthy gluten-free baked recipe!

Before we go jumping on the gluten free train, we have to ask ourselves why were ditching gluten in the first place. If youve just been diagnosed with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten intolerance, the reason why is clear. But what if youve been told that gluten is just bad for you? Is it legit? Lets talk.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye and all of the grains and products associated with those grains, like wheat-based pastas, soy sauce and spelt. Gluten is unique in that it contains a lot of proline and glutamine amino acid bonds that are hard for your digestive enzymes to fully break down. As such, these partially digested gluten fragments travel on through our gut to be flushed down the toilet. These fragments of gluten DO NOT cause any harm to a healthy gut nor does gluten cause inflammation in a healthy person.

But what about an unhealthy gut? What if you have autoimmunities such as Hashimotos or lupus, leaky gut or IBS? There is a lot of controversy in the literature but it is thought that gluten fragments might interact with the gut-based immune system or temporarily increase gut permeability.

Promotes General Health And Well Being

Most gluten-containing food products such as cakes and cookies are highly processed with high levels of sugars in the form of carbohydrates.

When broken down, these carbohydrates are converted to sugars which the body uses for different body functions.

However, the body only needs 4 grams of sugar circulating in the blood at any given point and time. So anything extra is converted and stored as fat in the midsection and around your internal organs. This leads to excessive weight gain predisposing you to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and related heart conditions.

The Diet Soon Turned Into Groundhog Day

Though dinner varied, one night I ate lemon roast chicken and another I had a sirloin steak with potatoes, each day was generally the same more water, more fruit, more salads, and more soups.

The lack of change was already beginning to irritate me, as was the quantity of food I was supposed to be consuming.

I weigh near 200 lbs and lifting weights at the gym is one of my biggest hobbies, hence eating big meals is pretty normal for me. Soups and salads were not cutting it, while the snacks were also lackluster.

Benefits And Challenges Of A Gluten Free Vegan Diet

Gluten Free Keto Diet

Unless you need to be gluten free for a health condition or intolerance, its important to state that there is no clear benefit to going gluten free. As I said, if youre healthy, gluten isnt the enemy! Of course, if gluten is an issue for you, going gluten free is probably going to make your gut feel better but healing does take time.

On the drawbacks, well, gluten-containing grains like wheat, barley and rye are really nutrient-dense so youll want to double down on whole foods like gluten free whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds to make up for it. Its worth noting that many gluten free packaged foods like breads and cereals are usually pretty low in fibre so enjoy high fibre plant foods like berries, ground flax and legumes to keep your digestive system in tip top shape.
