Gluten intolerance and celiac disease are different. People with celiac disease have an autoimmune response to gluten. This means their bodies try to fight against gluten as if it were a virus. This reaction causes inflammation and damage to their digestive tracts. Celiac disease is the result of an abnormal gene. People with celiac disease also have high levels of certain antibodies in their blood, which are substances that fight gluten.

Gluten sensitivity and celiac disease cause a lot of the same symptoms. But people with gluten sensitivity dont have an abnormal gene or antibodies in their blood.

When a person has celiac disease, the intestinal villi become damaged due to the celiac antibodies created by the ingestion of gluten by a person with the disease. This decreases absorption of nutrients from food as it travels through the gastrointestinal tract. The food is now travelling through the gut in a less thoroughly digested form. As it enters the lower end of the small intestine, the body cannot fully process this under-digested, unabsorbed food and can often only absorb the moisture from the stool sometimes more moisture than it should. The over-absorption of moisture from the stool by the small intestine causes hardened stools that can be difficult and painful to pass.

To make matters worse, gluten-free processed foods tend to be made with low-fiber starches and flours like white rice flour, potato starch and tapioca starch. The fiber that people on standard diets get through consuming whole wheat products is not available, and whole wheat bread or pasta is often replaced with gluten-free substitutes that contain little to no fiber. Many gluten-containing products these days are fiber-fortified, but few gluten-free products are. Even brown rice, a popular gluten-free whole grain, is not a very high fiber grain.

Are Probiotics Enough For Optimal Gut Health

There are two types of health issues that gluten may cause for people who are affected with the sensitivity to the protein. These are gluten intolerance and a less severe gluten sensitivity.

People who suffer from celiac disease need to always avoid gluten.

This disease is becoming increasingly common. A study in the Gastroenterology Journal reports that in the past 50 years, celiac disease has gone from affecting 0.15% of people to 0.83% of people in 2009, and now that number has risen to 1% of the population.

What Exactly Is Constipation

You have constipation if you have fewer than three bowel movements a week. Occasional constipation happens to many people, but your constipation is considered chronic if you’re constipated for several weeks or longer.

A medical study conducted in Ireland found that only 76% of patients had digestive symptoms at the time of their celiac disease diagnosis, including 56% with diarrhea and about 15% with constipation. One-third of the total group had abdominal pain. Another study found constipation in about 10% of children ultimately diagnosed with celiac disease.

As that study shows, you don’t even need to have gastrointestinal symptoms to have celiac diseaseabout one-quarter of people didn’t. While constipation was less common than diarrhea , it wasn’t particularly uncommon. Plenty of people had it.

A large Italian study of digestive and non-digestive celiac disease symptoms at the time of diagnosis found that 13% of people had constipation, 15% had alternating constipation and diarrhea, and 27% had so-called “classic” diarrhea. Earlier in this series I pointed to the latest research suggesting that we cant reverse the damage from Celiac disease without reversing leaky gut. So far, Ive shown you how toxic defense mechanisms in gluten-free cereal grains create leaky gut and inflammation.

Inflammation and Leaky gut are also caused by toxins produced by bad bacteria

Researchers have identified small intestinal bacterial overgrowth as the only other stimulus powerful enough to trigger zonulin release and create leaky gut the same way gluten does. In fact, they theorize that the body responds to SIBO by opening up the tight junctions as a defensive immune response intended to flush the bad bacteria from the body.

SIBO is an overgrowth condition that drives leaky gut syndrome and the Gluten-Free Diet is the fuel to feed the overgrowth. It’s depressing to say that there’s no magic bullet to relieve fatigue once you’ve been “glutened.” Therefore, most recommendations involve common-sense measures you can take to ease your tiredness while your body is recovering:

  • Slow down. Clear your schedule to the extent that you can and try to do as little as possible when you can afford it.
  • Stay organized. Fatigue plus brain fog can make you careless and forgetful. When suffering from gluten-related tiredness, make lists of things you need to do and then follow those lists. A little structure can help.
  • Get some exercise. It seems counterintuitiveexercising when you’re already tired? But a short walk or some yoga can increase your energy level, not decrease it. Don’t overdo it , but even a few minutes of mild physical exertion can help with your fatigue and may help you sleep better.
  • Get to bed early. If you also suffer from gluten-induced insomnia, you may feel as if you want to avoid bed, since hitting your pillow may wind up being an exercise in futility. But going to bed early, closing your eyes, and resting does help improve fatigue the next day.

Bloating Constipation And Gas

None of these symptoms are easy to deal with in everyday life. They may also become serious if constipation goes on for too long.

Celiac disease causes these digestive and gastrointestinal problems. One way to test for gluten intolerance is to cut out gluten completely and see if there is rapid and substantial improvement in bloating, constipation, and gas.

If these symptoms are lost with the elimination of gluten in the diet, it is a tell tale sign that the gluten is causing the issues.

Testing For Gluten Intolerance

To test for an intolerance to gluten, schedule a doctors appointment to have comprehensive blood work done. This will be able to sense the gluten intolerance, if it exists.

If the blood test results are negative, yet symptoms are still occurring, remember that some people are sensitive to gluten without being completely intolerant.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity can cause a reaction from gluten that also results in similar unpleasant symptoms of the gastrointestinal system.

There is no test for non-celiac sensitivity to gluten. If it seems like this may be an issue, consider cutting out gluten for at least 21 days to see if symptoms improve.

This requires a complete lack of gluten in the diet, so it is important to check all labels and all ingredients in every food that is consumed.

Some hidden sources of gluten beyond wheat are rye, barley, bulgur, farro, matzo, oatmeal, seitan, malt vinegar, soy sauce, mayonnaise, and other common foods. It is important to do research before starting on a gluten free diet when looking to see if a sensitivity is present.

These are some symptoms that should be taken into consideration when celiac diseases is on the table. Be on the lookout for these symptoms before consulting a physician and having a blood test.
