Are Pop Tarts Gluten Free

Recipe Step By Step Directions:

Healthy Pop Tarts! Homemade, Vegan & Gluten Free! Mind Over Munch

Step 1: Add your dry ingredients to a large bowl and whisk to blend them all together.

Step 2: Dump in the cold butter chunks. Again, use vegan butter if you are dairy-free.

Step 3: Use a pastry blender to cut in the butter.

Step 4: In a small bowl, whisk your wet ingredients together.

Step 5: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.

Step 6: Mix the ingredients the best you can. You dont want the dough too wet so it will take a bit of effort.

Step 7: I like to do the final mix by hand. It helps to really get the bits of dough all into one ball.

Step 8: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30-45 minutes. Getting it cold will help you get those flaky layers!

Step 9: Layout a piece of wax paper and place the dough ball on top. Optional: sprinkle a little flour on the wax paper to prevent sticking.

Step 10: Roll the dough to ¼-inch thickness. Use a pizza wheel to cut the uneven edges off. Cut into evenly sized squares or rectangles.

Step 11: Place jam or filling in the middle of a square. Spread it around but leave a good amount of dough around the edges. This is important so you can seal the edges together.

Step 12: Place a square the same size over the jam.

Step 13: Use a fork to press the edges down all around the square.

Step 14: Gently move each pop tart to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

Step 15: Brush the top of each pop tart with milk or egg wash.

If I had to think about what I have truly missed since going gluten free, I would have to say pop tarts are at the top of my list. I dont mean the gluten free ones you can buy in a storethose lack the flaky layers that make pop tarts so memorable!

I mean the gluten free pop tarts that you make from scratch and fill with your favorite fillings. Do you love Nutella? Use that. You can make one batch of my easy gluten free pop tarts and fill them with all sorts of things. Each batch will make 6-8 pop tarts depending on how large you make them.

How Do You Serve Gluten

Our yummy breakfast pastry is tasty at room temperature but even more delectable when warmed slightly. Simply serve right out if the oven, toast them in the toaster or pop them in the microwave for 15 seconds.

It makes for a great leftover breakfast that is perfect with a nice cold glass of milk or our non-alcoholic mimosa mocktail!

Ingredients For Homemade Gluten

Most of the ingredients to make these homemade pop tarts can be found at your local grocery store, but youll find great deals on gluten-free ingredients such as gluten-free flour online at or Thrive Market.

To make the gluten-free pop-tart crust youll need:

  • 1:1 Gluten-Free Flour. For this recipe I used Bobs Red Mill, but other 1:1 gluten-free flours may work as well. You can find .
  • Greek Yogurt. The plain, non fat kind.
  • Baking Powder.
  • Unsalted butter, melted. This is for brushing on the pastries to make them golden brown while baking. yum!

For the filling, I used strawberry preserves. But any flavor jam or preserves will do! Customize it to your favorite flavors!

To make the icing youll need:

  • Powdered Sugar
  • Milk.
  • Food Coloring. Food coloring is one ingredient that you want to be sure that its labeled gluten-free. Personally, I really love the gel colors by Nomeca as it is gluten-free but also soy free, nut free, and vegan for easy allergen free recipes! The colors are also so bright!

Finally, to make these toaster pastries extra fun, youll want gluten-free sprinkles. Again, sprinkles sometimes contain gluten.

My favorite gluten-free sprinkles are by the brand Sweets Indeed. They come in the best colors and shapes too.

Lets Make Chocolate Cashew Butter & Jelly Pop Tarts

All the inspiration for these Chocolate Cashew Butter & Jelly Pop Tarts came from one of my favorite chocolate bars: the Cashew Butter & Raspberry Jelly Chocolate Bar from Hu Kitchen. The dark chocolate is filled with layers of cashew butter & raspberry jelly, and the whole thing is paleo, vegan, and coconut sugar-sweetened. Its pure heaven. At night, you can usually find me on the couch with a cup of tea and a few squares of it.

But next to by itself, the best way to eat this chocolate is chopped up and tucked into a flaky crust. The flaky crust is both paleo and vegan. We make it with a combination of almond flour and cassava flour for the best, flakiest texture. Its lightly sweetened with coconut sugar, and we cut in coconut oil the way you would cut in butter with a traditional pie crust.

We roll out the crust into a big rectangle and cut it into sections. Then, we top half of those sections with the GOODS.

What Type Of Icing Is Best For Homemade Pop Tarts

Powdered sugar based icings are my favorite to work with when it comes to things like cookies and pop tarts! This one is tinted pink and flavored with the same sugar free strawberry jam that I used to fill the pop tarts.

Not a fan of strawberry? Try raspberry pop tarts by subbing in seedless sugar free raspberry jam. Or blackberry, blueberry, heck even peach pop tarts are fantastic!

Homemade Strawberry Jam Recipe:

  • For a homemade strawberry jam , combine 20 ounces frozen strawberries in a medium sized sauce pan with ¼ cup of water, and 3 tablespoons of coconut sugar.
  • Bring to a boil and then reduce to medium to medium-low.
  • Simmer for 25-30 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • The jam will continue to thicken as it cools. If the strawberries are too lumpy for your liking, simply puree using an immersion hand blender, or a regular blender .
  • Wait until completely cool before filling the pop tarts.

    Gluten-Free Pop Tarts Easy to Make

    While we are on the subject of cool, I think its pretty unique and amazing to make your own jam. You may have noticed that Im kind of obsessed with chia jam. I love having it on my toast in the morning. But when I was brainstorming for this recipe I thought why not throw chia jam in as the filling!? The chia jam is next level.

    The first batch of raspberry pop tarts that I made, Adam said the filling needed to be sweeter. I first tested it with just 2 tbsps of maple syrup and then tested it with 4. He obviously liked the recipe best with 4 tbsps, cause he has such a sweet tooth. A very picky sweet tooth. But you can adjust the sweetness yourself. I would suggest starting with less, and then you can always add another tablespoon or two during the blending process when you add the chia seeds. Remember there is a sweetened glaze on top of these gluten free pop tarts so that will increase the sweetness factor.

    The gluten free pastry that is used is crispy, yet flaky and soft on the inside. Its actually quite easy to roll out and it is quite forgiving. The filling on the inside is made of three simple ingredients and complements that flaky pastry perfectly. And that hibiscus glaze on top is Adams favourite part. Its basically the last part of the recipe that completes these vegan pop tarts.

    Is gluten free pastry a little fincky? Yes. But DONT be intimidated. If you follow the steps in the directions you will be ok! Promise. This vegan pop tart recipe is SO WORTH IT.

    Allergy Variations For Pop Tarts

    There are milk and egg-based ingredients in this recipe that can easily be converted to suit your allergy or dietary needs and have no effect on the finished recipe.

    First, for swapping out the butter, use a non-dairy butter of your choice. I find that Earth Balance butter sticks work great in baking recipes such as this. Their soy-free butter from a carton also works really well.

    To replace the dry milk powder, you can swap it for a plant-based protein powder of your choice. Just make sure that it is not a flavored variety as it can affect the final taste of your pop tarts. If you dont have something like this, no worries, just leave this out. Your pop tarts will still be amazing.

    The egg in this helps to bind the dough together. A flax egg or chia egg work perfect in this pastry recipe. Simply take 1 tablespoon of ground flax seeds or chia seeds and combine them with 3 tablespoons of almost boiling water. Stir them together and let it sit for about 5 minutes to get really gelatinous. Use as directed in the recipe.

    Because of how finicky and fragile these grain free pop tarts are, youre going to need to be mindful of a few things before you start.

  • Use COLD butter when creating your dough. Do NOT use melted butter.
  • In order to get the most flaky, buttery dough, youll need to use very cold butter. Add the cold butter into a food processor blender with the almond and tapioca flour and egg and pulse until completely incorporated. The reason we want to pulse the cold butter in is to get as crispy and flaky of a pop tart feel as possible! You cant get this same effect with melted butter. My vegan butter of choice for the BEST tasting bakes is the Miyoko brand.

    2. Freeze your dough for 15 minutes

    After youve created your dough, youll want to stick it in the freezer for 10-15 min tops. The almond flour dough is extremely fragile so the colder it is, the easier it is to work with it. Well be rolling out the dough very thinly- almost 1/8 of an inch.

    As you work with the dough with your hands, the heat from your hands will naturally warm it up and start to make the dough more breakable and flimsy. . If it starts to get difficult to handle, just put the dough back in the freezer again for a few minutes! It should harden up and be firmer to work with. I highly recommend only taking half the dough out first then leaving the other half in the freezer while youre working on rolling out the thin rectangle shapes.

    3. Work fastthe dough needs to stay chilled

    Firstly, do not skip the xanthan gum. This replicates the stretchiness of gluten and without it, youll find the pastry will be hard to handle and very crumbly.

    Yes, the FREEE flour I use already has xanthan gum in but trust me, youll want the extra in this recipe.

    Id recommend using either the FREEE gluten free flour, or a similar blend, such as the supermarket own ones.

    These tend to be a mixture of rice, maize and potato flour. If you try use a single flour, like coconut or almond flour, it will be completely different.

    Id also say definitely dont skip the chilling on this recipe.

    You want to use cold butter in the mixture, and youll find even this starts to soften as you rub it together with your fingers.

    Thats why its important to chill your gluten free pastry before you roll it out.

    If you dont chill it, youll end up with a super sticky mess that even clingfilm cant save!

    Gluten Free Dairy Free Pop Tarts

    The butter in the crust is the essential dairy in this recipe, and what youll struggle to replace perfectly. I would try Melt brand or Miyokos Kitchen brand vegan butter, or butter flavored Spectrum brand nonhydrogenated vegetable shortening. The milk can be your favorite nondairy milk, or even water.

    Fun Ways To Decorate Pop Tarts

    The sky is really the limit, if you can envision it for your pop tarts you can have it! I like to use all sorts of fun colored sprinkles and even have been known to mix up 2 different fruit flavored icings and swirl them together. There are no wrongs or rights here, it is all up to you and your imagination!

    How To Store And Refresh These Gluten Free Pop Tarts

    The finished pastries can be stored in a sealed glass container at room temperature and should maintain their texture for at least 3 days. Storing something in a glass container maintains texture, although a plastic container tends to make anything crispy become soft and weepy.

    For longer storage, try piling the prepared pastries in a freezer-safe container . Theres no need to freeze them first in a single layer, as theyre very stable at room temperature. Once the glaze is completely set, it shouldnt be damaged in storing them.

    To refresh them, do just what you do with a Kelloggs Pop Tart: pop it in the toaster oven! Theres no need to defrost the pastries if theyve been frozen. But remember that, if theyre frosted, that part gets super hot so be careful with those fingers!

    I’ve been gluten free for 2 and a half years now after finding out I had an intolerance to wheat. In my opinion, all of them have fallen short of Kellogg’s original design and taste. It seems that all other competitors can not get it right.

    The substitution just doesn’t work for them and often tastes awful.
