Gluten Free Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Bars ~ Using Animal Cookies/Crackers

After making these Frosted Animal Crackers, I threw them in a Ziploc bag and handed them out to the kids when it was treat time.

Im planning on making these for the kids lunches when school comes back around. Theyd also be great to make ahead and give out on snack and party days at school.

Changing up the sprinkles is perfect for any holiday or theme the school may be having! You can easily dye the chocolate as well to give them a little more color.

What Are The Animals In Frosted Animal Crackers

There are various varieties of grapes. Barnums Animals Crackers have featured 53 different animals since 1902, according to the company. Bear, bison, koala, camel, cougar, elephant, giraffe, gorilla, hippopotamus, hyena, kangaroo, lion, monkey, rhinoceros, seal, sheep, tiger, and zebra cookies are currently available.

Blanched Almond Flour And Coconut Flour

This recipe is strictly written as a grain-free recipe using blanched almond flour and coconut flour. Substituting sunflower seed flour for the almond flour may possibly work for a nut-free dough however, I have not tried it.

I do not recommend substituting any other gluten-free flours. If you need a recipe that doesnt contain nuts, try these gluten-free graham crackers.

Are Goldfish Healthier Than Cheez Its

Gluten

On a different note, it can be argued that: while not as tasty, Goldfish are significantly healthier than Cheez Its. Based off their serving size, Goldfish hold 250 mg of sodium on top of 20 grams of carbs, versus Cheez Its 230 mg of sodium with 17 grams of carbs. The shocker is in the serving size itself.

Circus Animal Cookie Ingredient Substitutions

  • I haven’t tested it myself, but you might be able to make these gluten free animal cookies vegan. You will need to swap in your favorite non-dairy butter and Greek yogurt. Just make sure the yogurt is similar in texture and fat content as regular Greek yogurt. For the icing, use non-dairy milk.
  • If you are not looking to make these animal cookies without eggs, you can substitute 1 egg instead of the egg replacer.

Taste Testing Kinnikritters Animal Cookies With My Nieces

Luckily, these were not reminiscent of the old Barnum variety. Modernized in taste, texture, and quality of ingredients, not a one failed to please a single child or adult in our party. Yes, none of the grown-ups could keep their hands out of the cookie jar either.

We started with the Bunny Grahams from Annies, moved onto the fun shapes from Eco-Planet , and finished out our kid-sized cookie tour with these KinniKritters from Kinnikinnick. Kinnikinnick differs from the other two brands, in that they only sell 100% gluten-free goodies. To be honest, I wasnt sure how everyone would respond to a gluten-free cookie, so I chose not to divulge the secret.

The littlest ones, ages 6 and 8, were all about the bunnies from Annies. The older kids, aged 10, loved the crunchy Eco-Planet cookies. Finally, the three adults had an affinity for the KinniKritters. Of course, no one complained about a single cookie! Every single one of us continued to go back for more of each until they had all vanished. Although, for some reason the Kinnikinnick Animal Cookies had top appeal to more mature taste buds.

After savoring a few, I think I pinpointed the reason. While not an exact duplicate, and lacking the frosting, the KinniKritters reminded me a good deal of Mothers Circus Animal Cookies from our childhood.

Why You’ll Love These Cookies

Gluten-Free Animal Crackers
  • Simply put, these cookies are so, so delicious. Good luck having just one! Personally, I love them even more than the store-bought kind. And no, I’m not just saying that.
  • They’re actually softer than the ones you get at the store, which I also like. The powdered sugar we’re using really helps with the texture.
  • They’re so much fun! I don’t think you can make these without a smile on your face. Plus, this is a great activity to do if you have little ones at home. They’ll love cutting out the animal shapes and decorating the finished cookies.

Youd Never Know These Diy Animal Crackers Are Whole Grain Gluten Free Sugar Free Dairy Free And Vegan They Sure Dont Taste Like It

I dont know what it is about Animal Crackers but I can never stop at just one. Anyone else out there get the same feeling? Its probably because Animal Crackers are a little bit salty, a little bit sweet, a whole lotta delicious. Too bad the storebought versions are made with unhealthy, low-quality ingredients. This is the ingredient list of Barnums Animal Crackers :

Enriched Flour, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Sugar, Soybean Oil, Yellow Corn Flour, Partially Hydrogenated Cottonseed Oil, Calcium Carbonate, Baking Soda, Salt, Soy Lecithin, Artificial Flavor.

First of all, weve got enriched flour, which is basically flour that is stripped of its nutrients and then bleached. Then weve got both high-fructose corn syrup and sugar, which are highly refined, high calorie, high glycemic, and contain no nutritional value. Next weve got hydrogenated oil . Dont even get me started on the dangers of hydrogenated oil. Finally, weve got artificial flavor. Because a synthetic flavoring made by some scientist is so necessary .

Okay, rant over. Because now weve got these Healthy Homemade Animal Crackers so snack on! These cute little crackers are whole grain , sugar free , and all natural .

I swapped the white flour + corn flour with oat flour + homemade corn flour .

I swapped the high-fructose corn syrup + sugar with all-natural granulated erythritol + organic stevia extract.

I swapped the soybean oil + hydrogenated oil with coconut oil.

Gluten Free Circus Cookies

I remember studying for some tests I had to take and I put in some long night hours since I had kids to deal with during the day. These little cookies and a pot of coffee kept me going all night long. After my studying days, they became just an occasional treat. I had to keep it at occasional because I can and will eat the whole bag given the chance. But last 10 years they have been off-limits due to Celiac Disease.

Tips For Making The Best Circus Animal Cookies

Gluten
  • For best results, I always recommend weighing the flour with a kitchen scale rather than using measuring cups. This is the best way to ensure accuracy, which is important because even adding a little bit too much flour will result in a very different texture.
  • The chill time is very important in this recipe! This is a soft cookie dough and it will be much easier to work with after it has chilled a bit. It also helps keep the cookies from spreading in the oven.
  • Making the icing can take a bit of eyeballing, which is why I recommend adding the milk in gradually, one tablespoon at a time. If you do accidentally thin out the icing too much, it’s an easy fix! Just add more powdered sugar — again, working slowly, one tablespoon at a time.

A Gluten Grain & Dairy

If I am being honest I bought a box of gluten-free animal crackers last month. They brought back a lot of childhood memories . But I looked at the ingredients & they were definitely not the best. Gluten-free doesnt automatically mean healthy!

So I decided to try & create my own version ! But these offer that same animal cracker mouth feel & I personally love the nutty flavour of them from the almond flour.

If you dont have the animal cookie cutters I used, they can easily still be made! Just cut them into squares with a knife, but if you want to make the fun animal shapes like I did you can find the cookie cutters I used HERE!

Ok so I wont waste any more time & lets get into the recipe! Make sure yo tag me on if you make them so I can re-share your creations on my story!-Lau

If you want an icing to top on these or make them into dunk-a-roos try my sugar-free cream cheese icing HERE or my vegan cream cheese icing HERE!

Are Animal Crackers Processed

The process is quick, sometimes only taking 4 minutes for animal crackers, and just slightly longer for graham crackers. At this point, there is a post-conditioning process that takes place before the packaging. The crackers are flipped twice in the process as they travel on a series of conveyors to cool.

What Makes Animal Crackers Special

These gluten free animal crackers are buttery and light, and melt in your mouth just like the conventional kind in that little box. And just like the conventional ones, they break easily. Its part of their charm.

They taste a bit like butter cookies, but they also have an egg in the batter. That gives them some richness, and also creates some structure.

Theyre fragile mostly because animal shapes tend to have thin portions. A giraffe neck and an elephant trunk always seem to be the first to go.

What Is Tapioca Starch

Gluten Free Animal Cracker Taste Test!!! Goodie Girl vs Kinnikinnick

Tapioca starch is a natural thickener . I use it in a lot of my paleo and gluten-free recipes as it helps to take away some of the density of other gluten-free flours. It’s thin and powdery and and has little to no taste. I used Let’s Do Organic Tapioca Starch by Edward & Sons in this recipe! It’s great for rolling out the dough too! Just sprinkle some on top of your counter and roll away!

Why You Should Not Be Feeding Your Kids With Store

The thing is, the goldfish crackers are not healthy. They contain cheap hydrogenated oils , synthetically fortified flour conventional wheat , conventional dairy , autolyzed yeast a known additive which makes you overeat, and a mix of other unknown spices.

Also, are goldfish dairy free? No, they have dairy, or at least a milk derivative in their composition, plus theyre processed in a facility that also handles milk, whey, soy and wheat.

So its probably best to make your own vegan / gluten free Goldfish crackers and add some ingredients that will truly benefit your childs health!

What Brands & Types Of Animal Crackers Are Vegan

Animal Crackers where always one of my favorite snacks, along with Goldfish Crackers.

Unfortuantely Goldfish crackers arent really vegan-friendly, so that childhood snack is out of the question. Fortunately, Animal Crackers are almost always vegan, with most brands being 100% Vegan.

While Animal Crackers are normally vegan there are a few brands to avoid, such as Austins Zoo Animal Crackers which contain milk. Those brands are rare, but another thing you need to watch out for are frosted animal crackers, as most frosted animal crackers contain gelatin in the frosting, which isnt vegan at all.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

Gluten

High Fructose Corn Syrup in our food supply has stirred a lot of commotion in recent years. Over the past few decades, HFCS has sneakily made its way into more and more food products. This is because compared to regular table sugar, it is cheaper, sweeter, and much more rapidly absorbed in the bloodstream.

Consuming too much of this corn syrup can lead to problems such as insulin resistance, obesity, and high blood pressure. It is better to consume products that dont have this listed in their ingredients label.

Next time you find yourself standing in the cookie aisle of the supermarket, debating which brand of animal crackers to buy the best options are Annies, Kirkland, and Trader Joes. These are the only brands available that dont contain high fructose corn syrup, artificial dyes, and processed sugars.

  • The History Of Animal Crackers

My personal history of animal crackers goes back to other kids having them at lunch in grammar school. If I had a cookie, it was probably in a Glad fold over plastic bagand it was probably an Oreo.

I have plenty of legitimate gripes about my childhood, and I know that this doesnt rank. But would it have killed my parents to just buy me that little shoebox with the tiny string for my lunch the once?

A little internet sleuthing reveals that Nabisco has been making the P.T. Barnum-inspired shaped cookies since 1902. Nabisco named them animal crackers, but a similar version had been around in Britain before that.

Apparently, the Brits just called them animals. That doesnt help explain why theyre animals in the first place, but I stopped being super curious by the turn of the 20th Century.

Besides Nabisco Barnums Animal Crackers, there also that type that comes in that huge plastic bear.

This gluten free version is more like the Barnums kind, since the huge bear kind have no taste whatsoever. And their texture isnt much better. Lets stick with Nabisco.

The frosting seems to have originated with the Stauffers brand of animal crackers. I wonder if the ones in the big bear are made by that brand. If so, the frosted ones no doubt taste like frosted nothing.
